Now that at least some versions of the 2005-2011 Porsche 911, aka the 997, are available on the used market for somewhat reasonable amounts of money, we feel obligated to drive as many of them as possible. This 2006 Carrera S is clean and completely stock.
Check out Drew's 997 on Wheelwell!

I've probably watched this about ten times now, over the past few years. I finally got myself a 997 Carrera 2S a couple of months back and I am loving it no end! It's a 2008 46k mile clean example with some nice options such as sports exhaust, short shifter and extended leather, sold the Golf GTI so it's our only car and so far so damn good! The gf was concerned as she's not the most confident driver but it's so easy to drive and visibility is excellent. I did have the PCM swapped out to a Pioneer unit to include mod cons such DAB/satnav/Bluetooth plus a reversing camera, which has modernised it. No one believes it's twelve years old. I would highly recommend it to anyone sitting on the fence, now is the time to get one!

I also recently got a manual transmission 997.1 C2S with 14,000 miles and will be selling my 2017 Mark 7 GTI with 18,000 miles. Prices on these 997s have skyrocketed- $70 K for mine.

@@ronn878 Nice one, congrats! Everything is inflated right now, I imagine you got more for your GTI too. Either way I doubt you'll regret it and the 911 (especially yours having low miles) will likely keep appreciating. Enjoy it, don't be afraid to put miles on it (mines now on nearly 64k miles)!

Checking in from 2022 and these 997.1 C2S cars have sky rocketed in value, $70k for low mile examples and $50-60k for mid mileage ones. 6 speeds add about a 10% premium. I’ve seen 100k+ mileage ones sell form $35-45k for a manual example.

I love my 997.1 C2S with manual transmision in silver colour like the review. It still has that analog driving sensation, which has been lost in the most modern models. The 991 and 992 are cars, bigger comfortable as a gt. The 997 still retain the essence of the classic 911. Long life to legendary sports car.

I still think a convertible 997 S is the best fun/performance/practicality/value car ever made. 4 seats, no boot space comprises from roof unlike others, big front boot/trunk, fast, solid, reliable, and so affordable now. For a young person with one car for everything, it's pretty perfect.

there 6 bolts.. .two to connect stuff mounted to the engine and 4 that holds the engine to the car.. Obviously you need to disconnect the gearbox which is 6 bolts so in total 12 bolts that easily come off.

pokiou cool. 12 bolts. Does this mean that a lay person can do this? Or if done by a shop, is this an easy task which means low labour cost to drop the engine to do basic maintenance. I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect in terms of cost.

Honestly IMS isn't that big of a deal breaker. You either look for one that has that issue sorted, or fix it yourself. It's definitely not as common as you think, and most IMS affected cars were affected early on in their life (i.e. before 20-30k miles).

GT3 “shifter” is a PDK automatic, and you would prefer that? - the manual is the dream! I guess that is why the 991 911R is selling for twice retail, with a 6-speed manual, and a 2016 991.1 911 GT3 RS (new with few miles) just sold at Golding Amelia 2018 for just over $190k, with that “amazing” 7-speed PDK... People. Please when you purchase a car like this please please please get the proper tires. I have gone cheap on tires with my old M3 when I had a set given to me. After recently going from PS2 to PSS on my 911, I can tell you that good tires are worth the small investment. I may actually go Cup 2 tires next round, since that's what comes on the GT4 and GT3, it could only help my C2s. Plus I only drive it 6k miles a year. Tires make a HUGE difference!

This is explication I herd way back when was with the flat roads of Germany the rear engines and suspension work together forcing rear wheels down to road for better traction. That’s what my buddy used to tell me when he was stationed in Germany he drove a Porsche when he was in army on snowy flat road always saying “you have to gas it out of the corners, that’s how you have to drive them” I learned two things that day how to drive a Porsche in the corners and that lucky bastard was on the US Army’s ski team in Germany. They should have put that on a poster maybe more people would join the army.

For the record ims is not an issue in 997 3.8s. The 997 3.6 still can have issues but much less than 996 and both are non issues if its ok and you get in there and replace it with the LN bearing. Now these 997.1s have issues with cylinder wall linings going to shit. Have seen that quiet a few times while working for Porsche in the last 3 years.

I have never driven one of those, but I don't really know why you should get this instead of a 981 cayman s. You get a newer car, with similar performance, better chasis and although the cayman has "only" a 3,4 flat six, it sounds as good as a 3,8.

Late to the party but I recently drove a nice 05 C2S with 73kms and nearly bought it. Really a great all around car. I have driven a 997 GT3 as well. In the end I couldn't do it for fear of IMS and bore scoring. A motor failure would hurt too much and I am the type to worry.

WHAT PORSCHE MODELS ARE PRONE TO IMS FAILURE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED? - All 986 Boxster models. - 987 Cayman & Boxster models up to engine number 61504715 - All 996 models (not including: GT and Turbo models) - 997 3.6ltr with M96/05 up to engine number 6950745

All 996's except Turbo's and GT3's. The 05 997's, but the 06-08 have an improved IMS. Then in 09 they took care of it!
@qikqbn77

I would say that's a bit over estimated. Not "All" 986 or 996 need it. The Majority are any Boxsters or 911's between the years 2001-2005. 1997-2000 mostly used what is called a "double row ball bearing" Ims bearing.These were very robust and very few failures. For the 997 models you touched on the engine numbers, but the main isssue is because from 2001-2005 Porsche used a "single row ball bearing" ims bearing, which turned out to be a bad decision. This single row bearing was the main culprit and although it did cause Porsche a lot of headaches, there are still countless thousands of 2001-2005 986, 996, 987, 997's on the road with high mileage and using the original ims bearing. From 2006-2008 Porsche switch again to an improved and stronger single row bearing. 2006-2008 are years that I consider the strongest of the ims bearing design. Porsche got burned enough and tried to remedy the ims issue in those models. Although with any high mileage engine from any manufacturer it does not hurt to invest in peace of mind if and when you do a clutch job. I know severa 2001-2005l 996 and 997 Carrera owners with over 120,000 miles and still running the original ims bearing. Is it on their list to change some day... but it's not keeping them up at night either.

Some of the claims really make me wonder: - How can you judge understeer at that speed? A 911 understeers before it oversteers but to get to that understeer zone you got to drive quite heavy - heavier than he did, definitely. - Tyre studs are not allowed Germany - or other Central-European countries. But you have to have M&S tyres in Germany during the winter season. In Nordic countries we do use studs. In the Alps you got to use chains sometimes. - M96 for 996 is not an 30 000 USD engine! A used proper engine is anything between 5000 and 8000 USD these days and some work. It's gone to the point that an LS swap no longer is the cheap option.

I used to have a 996, my mechanic at Porsche Center told me not to change the IMS because it would've caused problem already and it is much more likely to be a problem in the future if I go with aftermarket IMS.

I test drove my 1st Porsche 911 last week. 2006 Carrera 4S. Great History, All Books and Records. Both Keys/Remotes. Newer Michelin Skins... Between City and Hey and 22 Miles I found myself in pain at the end of the drive. Had serious back pain for 3 days... Please Tell me not all 911s are that brutal to their Owner's Backs...
@qikqbn77
@qikqbn77 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry about your back pain. That's a bummer because the 2006 Carrera 4S is a great car. Did you happen to hit the "sport" button during the test drive? If you did then this automatically sets the suspension to it's hardest settings which is unbearable on rough city streets and highways. You can turn the suspension "pasm" off separately, but it is kind of a 2 step process. Porsche's are sports cars 1st. They are created to be great handling cars in the corners out of the box. This does offer compromises and trade offs for comfy highway and street driving. Road conditions are a huge factor, Regular seats vs sport seats, condition of shocks/struts, Tire pressure and size of wheels all play a role. I have owned a 2006 Carrera 4S for over 8 years and 75k miles. Got it practically new and I absolutely still love it and never had any back pain issues, but the ride is not "cadillac" friendly on your back. Definitely a firm ride compared to the average car.

Very very cool, thanks for trying a 997 Carrera S gen1, glad you enjoyed it - this is valuable information since you get to drive so many cars. The GT3 shifting mechanism does fit the 997gen1 and Porsche does a short shift kit for this model which ends up being even shorter than the GT3's.

Such a lovely episode. I was checking out that there are a few places that do 996-997 body conversion kits for not too much and was wondering, if mechanically, the 996 could be brought up to this level of performance for under the price of the 997? Only reason I ask, is the price point is the only way I am going to be able to get into a Porsche at this time in my life. Thanks Matt, get on ROGAN again already!

Bought my 997 3 years ago - sold it this year for more than I paid for it. Maintenance can be expensive, yes. But the car is not depreciating. Look at it from this perspective: buy any 80k+ performance car new today and you will be losing at least 15k the moment you drive it off the lot. In 3 years (and that's an optimistic estimate!) it will have lost more money in depreciation than that 997 cost!

Certain areas remind me when I used to take my bike up to Angeles Crest highway to Newcombs Ranch. Been many years, but you start to remember what's around almost every bend. CHP were a surprise every so often (usually the week after someone went down). That was many years ago for me. For all you Porsche owners. When people say, Porches are very dependable. Is that a totally relative term? Like relative to Ferrari and Lambos? Nothing remotely resembling Lexus? I know nothing about these cars. I can afford to buy a used one like this, but I can't afford high maintenance. I'm old. I'm not wrenching either. lol
