Great video enjoyed seeing you diag this vehicle, and forgive me for being ignorant as too I’m still trying to learn about scoping etc and trying to learn how to diag. But why not just start with a compression test than a cylinder leak down test?
@SuperMarioDiagnostics
@SuperMarioDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
Davion Martinez the clear flood test already led us to believe that there was a contribution issue with one of the cylinders. Now it was only up to identifying which one. That's where i did the relative compression test. Once I identified the offending cylinder, the compression test wouldn't have told me anything I didn't already know up to that point. So I went with the leakdown as that was the test that would give me the answer I wanted: why was it contributing less? Plus I did go in cylinder at the offending cylinder and I saw that it was over 20 psi less than the number 1 cylinder. So i did do a compression test, but not with an analogue gauge. I never do analogue compression tests anymore.

I use a small toy balloon to find TDC. Slip the balloon over the compression test hose nipple. Turn engine and watch for balloon to inflate. It shows TDC accurately. I use 10 foot audio patch cables to extend scope leads for getting to the rear of the car or to get inside the car from under hood. They have RCA male plugs so I use RCA-F to BNC-M adapters to make connections. I find exhaust pulse waveforms similar to intake waveforms. Mostly you're looking for the "odd man out", then ID the cylinder and look closer at it. To ID the cylinder; label the firing order, from the sync, onto the waveform. Then label the companion cylinders, in FO, under the IGN FO. The exhaust pulse for the sync cylinder is shown by the companion cylinder label. The same for an intake. ie: the short intake pulse on this car is cylinder 2, as you said because of crankshaft speed. An exhaust valve leak won't, otherwise, affect the intake waveform as seen by the cylinder 3 intake pull being equal to cyl4 pull. FLS type sensor waveforms can be confusing because they are AC coupled and don't have a fixed baseline. I get the most information from the "swing" of the waveform. The length of the rise or of the fall of the waveform as compared to the rises , or falls, of other parts of the waveform show differences in cylinders. Your explanation of the expansion void is generally correct but caution is needed because of the delayed intake valve timing of some engines . The degrees BTDC that the intake closed and the degrees ATDC when the exhaust opens was generally equal but VVT and Dynamic Compression Ratio engines delay closing the intake so that an expansion void may form. It won't be as pronounced as a large leak but could lead you astray. I'm anxious to see what Dmitriy's video shows.

Very interesting. I learned how to use cylinder pressure transducer and an inductive pick up to a dual trace scope to isolate a particular leaking cylinder, how to add a vacuum transducer to the mix get a picture of the pressure fluctuations, (being an electrician I would have no trouble making a sensor extension to reach the exhaust) and how you interpreted that pressure picture to know it was not leaking t the intake, how to do the leak down test to use process of elimination to eliminate the rings and intake as suspects and then check the exhaust to verify that's where the leak is. I just can't afford that pico scope so I would have to do the leak down test on each cylinder until I found it.

Mario, great video! Could the reduced intake pull when the weak cylinder in compression stroke be accountable to just enough leak by the exhaust valve during overlap of the other cylinder's valves to reduce the intake pull? If it was an intake valve leak then the pressure from compression stroke would make a spike upwards in the other cylinder's intake pull? Just trying to learn, love the channel.

Great video as usual my fiend! Keep them coming! I love to learn more and more of cylinder and pressure waveforms! Question? When you do the leak test, if you use the first look sensor on the exhaust will it catch it? I mean is air flow so it should right? An easiest and graphic way to show the leak.

what will be the theory of weak intake pull as you said I have been told intake issues but there are variables for sure. thanks for sharing
@SuperMarioDiagnostics
@SuperMarioDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
There are three variable for a "weak" pull: If it's weak on the compression stroke of the suspect cylinder: intake valve leak. If it's weak on the intake stroke of the suspect cylinder: not an intake leak, but compression loss elsewhere. If the intake pull appears "weak" on the tdc after the suspect cylinder: it's crank speed related, as the crank slowed down, the intake appears to weaken.

Hi Mario Great Video! I am just getting into using the WPS and First look sensors to troubleshoot engine mechanical issues. Maybe you can shed some light here. I was surprised to see this cylinder with an exhaust valve leak severe enough to cause a noticeable cranking cadence issue didn't really seem to show up in cylinder 3's intake pull as weaker. At a quick glance my inital thought as well went right to intake valve leak until I calmed down and realized that the 'weaker' pull in your pattern was not in the right spot to be caused by 3 on the upstroke to TDC. Thoughts? And keep the videos coming!
@SuperMarioDiagnostics

@@SuperMarioDiagnostics would it be safe to say then that the intake pulls seen by the first look sensor are more greatly influenced by intake valve leaks that impact another cylinders intake pull vs using it to look for leaks on the exhaust valve? Or would it be on a case by case basis? Edit- I say this because to my untrained eyes exhaust pulse patterns are trickier and messy looking to me Thanks again!

So I had a handful of codes thrown. P0300 etc etc. I changed the ICM which took care of the misfires on #2 and 3, stopped blowing fuel in the cat to super heat it.......... Now I hang a P0341 camshaft position sensor code. However, the this 2.2L does not have a camshaft position sensor. Does anyone have an idea of what it could be? Engine runs pretty good but I do feel a miss here and there, no misfire codes at all though.
@SuperMarioDiagnostics
@SuperMarioDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
These use the ICM to calculate crankshaft position. Specifically using cylinders 1&4. If there's any ignition system issues with either of these cylinders it may throw this code. Was the ICM an original part? I would also scope the brown/white at the icm to see if a good signal is coming out
@chulachaser5321

@@SuperMarioDiagnostics the icm was missing on #2 & 3. I used a test light to find that. The ICM is now new and runs better. And by the looks of the plugs, its hitting on all cylinders. However it still stumbles from time to time. I went ahead and pulled the crankshaft position sensor, tested it with a multimeter and it was good. I cleaned off the gunk that was on it. It seemed to help, but still have a P0341. My sister had it at a shop prior to me working on it. They "said" they changed the coil packs, but that is highly suspect of not really being changed. I dont know why I just thought of this But when you said exhuast pulse this popped in my head One time I did a ride along with the customer while I monitored the labtop It was winter and dang customer passed some massive gas on me 🤢 Man I almost walked back to shop ,it was awful

It would not be a bad idea when you find an exhaust valve not sealing or a chunk missing out of one to do an injector leak down test. Just to make sure you don't have one that is restricted. An injector that is partially plugged/restricted causes the valve to get extremely hot and possibly warp or have a chunk of it go missing. Just a thought.

out of curiosity, why wouldn't you synch to the #1 injector trigger as opposed to going in-cylinder?
@SuperMarioDiagnostics
@SuperMarioDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
Because the injector fires around the intake stroke. Unless it were a direct injection engine, it would not line up with tdc

@@SuperMarioDiagnostics I know and agree. I'm just curious if we could find a way to use the injector trigger in conjunction with the coil trigger (since it's two cylinders) to narrow down which coil trigger was which cylinder. (This is more a curiosity, not necessarily practical since we'd need this same setup vehicle to screw around with and verify. And ultimately probably wouldn't have saved us any time). Again, merely a curiosity :)

On the intake pulse waveform could you contribute the weak pull to the exhaust leaking into the cylinder during the intake stroke. I’m new to interpreting these waveforms but that was my first thought. Although slower cranking leading to a weaker pull does make sense as well.

Hey bud these are really good videos but the question I have is Once you know which cylinder is bad why not just do the leak down test and go from there Instead of the complex computer graphics thing Because at the end you’re still confirming everything with a Basic leak down test tool
