Ohhhh how I love my S40. I've had it over a year now and I'm still loving it every day. Might not have a TALL trunk but it's still a very spacious one [you're not going to find a very tall rear end in anything other than a hatchback, wagon or SUV anyways!]. And as far as the pedal "problem", I'll admit I've hit the wrong pedal from time to time but it's never bothered me at all. As far as looks, sooo many people have gotten in my car and immediately uttered "wow this is a nice car." So worth it.

Own the 2007 model, and I'll say this about the acceleration - get that gas pedal all the way down to the floor, and depress the buffer button. The front and rear stabilizers can handle it - DON'T BE AFRAID! It will do 0-60 mph in under 8.5 seconds.

Thanks for the great review! Really informative and helpful for any used car buyer! I have a question regarding reliability though, how reliable is this car? I've heard cases where the car just seems to be swarmed with repairs after 60K miles, and sometimes even before that? Are repairs expensive?

@nighttrain334 It's not a comparison, it just shares its chassis with the Focus.

I own a 07 S40 and it is a great car for me. I've travelled from Greece to Italy, Austria, Germany, Denmark and Sweden twice. Although it lacks the power (it is the 1.8lt) it's so easy to travel with this car that you can really enjoy the voyage! The riding quality is great, the materials quality is just a click under Audi, the handling is excellent (Ford Focus II chassis, and this is GOOD), the boot is quite small and so is the space for the passengers (but this is not my concern :P :P :P).

Something that surprises me is that the motor journalists always mention acceleration from 0-60 in seconds. Does it matter whether the car reaches cruising speed 2 seconds before or later when you still need to take into account other traffic ? Is it about to come home before the neighbor ? and what will people use the two seconds they have gained during their stressful driving for ? Go for a walk with the dog , wash the dishes, or vacuuming ?

overtaking more to do with torque in the right place ,then horse power .0-60 in a car like this doesnt come in to it What do people do excelerate to 60 where ever they go then dont go any faster or slower .In gear exceleration is far more important

I'm considering buy one of those second hand. A good thing about Volvos here is that the prices drop REALLY quicky after you take them out of the store and put a license place on it. So buying it second hand can be an interesting idea considering the features it provides... only pain in the ass is the ensurance cost

@faznout This is becoming a common problem. Rear passengers seem to be an afterthought in an increasing number of cars.

It's a great car that DOES share the same chassis with the EUROPEAN Ford Focus. That is a FACT.

Whilst it shares the ford/mazda platform, volvo still did alot of work themselves on it. Its incorrect to assume cars that platform share are exactly the same. Across Ford, mazda, jaguar and volvo of this era each car is quite different, different choice of gearboxes, different engines aswell as some of the same engines but in different specs. Built in different countries and so on. The focus platform is a great one anyway.

stop that fight between s40 and focus mk.2 , my family have both cars with the same engine , i can tell you for sure , the volvo is more comfortable car ,has better ride quality , is quieter and has better build and materials quality . focus is not as refined as the volvo, it rides stiffer but it handles better (on my opinion) and has great steering feel which makes it really fun to drive. I really like both cars and i believe is amazing that with different ways they are as good

@cyberbobpl s40 is a C class like mazda3, civic, bmw 1-series, not fair to compare it to D class bmw 3-series. Volvo s60 is a D class and costs equal

You gotta be kidding me! I bought my s40 FOR its incredible amount of space. Never had a complaint from any passengers, not even from anyone sitting behind my boyfriend when he has his seat as far back as it'll go [he's very tall]. This must've been something they fixed with the 2007 model [what mine is]. I picked my car over a v50 wagon BECAUSE of the trunk space. I can easily fit three large travel bags in it and then some.
@faznout13 жыл бұрын
This is one of those cars I like to call a 2 SEATER that just happens to have 4 doors. This car lacks passener space in the back even for your average height person. I'd say use the back seat for extra storage and not people. I don't know what volvo was thinking when it comes to the trunk. The space inside the trunk is fair for the size of the car, but actually getting things in it besides small bags is impossible. Performance is great if your looking for a quick small car.

In Europe all the "old" major premium brands have a sort of nickname. BMW - the sporty one, the Bimmer or Kidney-grill Volvo - premium, elegant, nothing bold just minimalism and functionality Clearly umk3mafioso is right. S40 is an alternative to the 1 Series BMW which is a hatch. Both have limited rear passenger and boot space. But since I really dig the chunkiness of the Volvo, and not into the sporty driving that much, I vote for the S40.

Who in their right mind would pay $40000 or more for this car? Best to wait 5 years until the price becomes reasonable!
@ammichalzeszen11 жыл бұрын
What a silly statement. As both cars share the same chassis, Volvo replacement parts probably dropped a bit on the price tags, which is a good thing when we talk about Volvos... A person who understands about cars will spot the quality diference between S40 and Focus with no need for comments such yours.
