Not a complete video, but shows some detailed steps with changing the transmission fluid and filter on a 2007 Chevy Cobalt with a 2.2L Ecotec engine, with an automatic transmission. Shows in detail how to remove a plug on the side of the transmission to check & properly fill.

Was thinking of whether to fill from the top or from that overflow plug & what if its not full but, that during the process of the trans fluid running down its inner case, sone splashed out. I guess the only true way to know for sure is to have someone fill from the top while another watches that plug or, to fill from the plug until it oozes out real good. I just purchased second hand, a 07 Pontiac G5 vin-F 2.2 & it hauls for a four cylinder!!!! Ive always loved pontiac's!!! Ive already fixed a few things on it & plan on doing alot more!!!!

You could pump and fill from the bottom, but I would recommend filling from the top. When you've added about as much as you drained, start watching the hole, or listen for fluid to start draining into a drain pan. Let it slow to a drip and then install the plug. It's not like you have to be +/- a tablespoon.

What type of fluid? I have a 07 Pontiac G5 vin-F 2.2 automatic transmission.Gkad to know about that plug! Heard about it but, now since you showed it, THANKS!!! WHAT TYPE OF TRANS FLUID TO USE?
@jimdandy6472

Almost for sure would be DEXRON-VI Automatic Transmission Fluid, but verify with parts store, dealer, etc. Could use "Conventional" or the better Full Synthetic.

some people online say to check the level with it running but when i did that it was spraying out of the check hole.... is this the correct way?
@jimdandy6472

As there is no dip stick, I say, after changing the trans fluid and getting the level close, run for about 1-2 minutes while applying the brake and shifting through the gears, then shutoff the engine, remove the plug and fill until it starts running out.

Hi Jim, I recently did this to my car and had anxieties over how much ATF I should've put in, was wondering since I may have overfilled was it right of me to have the car heat up and then drain the plug to see if it was overfilled? I took out about 1.5 quarts extra since I didn't measure the ATF properly when I first initially did the drain and refill, but it looked roughly like I had 8 quarts or 2 gallons taken out. Would it matter checking the fluid hot or cold?

I think you're good to go, I would not worry about the level hot vs cold.

If I wanted to make it perfectly level, where would I check it at? I'm doing this in my driveway and my driveway is not level at all.
@jimdandy6472
@jimdandy6472 2 жыл бұрын
First of all, don't get too worried about being perfectly level, close is fine. Can you back it up your driveway, put the park brake ON, use wheel chocks under the rear tires, then jack up the front and use jack stands to hold it "level".

Be lucky it has one.. On my Caddy you have to pump it in from the side of the tranni from underneath into the fill hole until it squirts out into your left eye and ear..🤣🤣

So there's no way to check to see if the Cobalt you just bought is 2 quarts low on trans fluid. You have to drain it & put back in 5 quarts... What a fucked up way to design a car. All because manufacturing companies tell the engineers to design it like that because the people that buy cars are not smart enough to maintain the proper fluid level in the transmission... It's like they screw you over with the price, then slap you in the face when you want to maintain it at home.... This is one of the reasons I'm driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee.....

I'm not the original owner, so i don't know the service history. In this video I changed it at 150,000. Most cars now days say no need to change unless you tow things, or do a lot of stop and go driving. My rule of thumb is do a drain and fill every 75,000.

You had a leak..almost at the end ..i got to see it..the gasket didnt seal right 😬were suppose to add rtv as auxiliary
@jimdandy6472
@jimdandy6472 3 жыл бұрын
What you saw at 16:13 was brake clean with a bit of trans fluid dripping off, not a gasket leak. This type of gasket needs no RTV, but it's America so you can add if you please.

I was told that if you haven't changed the transmission oil after a certain time, do not change it as the metal shavings created by the friction plates will be flushed out causing more problems. What's your opinion?
@jabbajawz
@jabbajawz 4 жыл бұрын
You can usually tell by your transmission fluid color and if it stings your nose when you smell it. New transmission fluid is red. Fluid that needs to be changed would be dark brown and burnt fluid would be black. If you have never changed your fluid and it's black and stings your nose when you smell it, then you shouldn't touch it because there is damage. If the transmission is slipping, then don't change because it's only going to make it worse. So if there are no issues with your transmission and the fluid isn't burnt, then you should be good to change. Don't flush, just a drain and fill.
@jimdandy6472

I basically agree with the other Reply from Jermaine Beckford. I think a lot of transmission fluid and filter changes are done in hopes of "fixing" a transmission that is already having problems and that basically never works. In my opinion if your transmission is relying on pieces of metal and/or pieces of clutch plate material floating in the old fluid to work, then you are very near the end of its life. In those cases changing the fluid could cause things to get worse. If your transmission is working OK and the transmission fluid does not smell like a shorted electronic circuit board, and is not dark brown then I recommend you do a drain and fill every 50k or so for the typical everyday car. If you have to drop the pan to change the fluid, go ahead and change the filter while you are there. Many car maintenance manuals now say you never need to change the transmission fluid unless your driving situation is unusual like frequent mountain driving or frequent towing. I don't recommend doing a flush of all the fluid.
