I'm chinese and I think I had that Egg with Ham roll (as a supermarket snack food, not as a mre) and I think I have a guess at what's in it: The "Ham" mystery meat is a chinese version of Spam. Except with more gelatin and starch filler (and the meat is not necessarily all pork; sometimes some chicken is used as well). "Meat cake" is probably the best description I can give ya, or a hotdog with more bone gelatin. The "egg" part is more like a cheap, savoury custard. More like "egg jelly". By and by, it's not that bad. However it's one of those cheap comfort food for people without a lot of pocket change. You can improve the flavour a bit of you put some hot sauce on it, but not by a lot. It might be more acceptable to people like me, who ate it semi-frequently as a child and still have some nostalgic memories of it.

The newer type 09 MRE tastes much better. Type 06 is more like an experiment for the PLA. The long tradition in the Chinese military is to cook on the field. By a company cook or by individual soldiers. The Army wasn't really interested in packaged MREs. When I was in high school, I lived a month and half on type 09 MREs, they're pretty good

I heard people saying that in PLA rations they intentionally making all the side dishes taste bad or not good, like that cake thing, its to prevent soldiers eat them for snacks.

I approve of this. And fyi, that egg roll with pork seems to be similar to a Chinese shumai - an overly processed version of it at least. It's commonly known as "pork hash" in English. Pretty much just a minced pork type of forcemeat with an egg noodle type wrapping around it. Usually cooked via steaming. It's a pretty decent snack actually.

In case it has not already been mentioned (reference why your heater failed): You should dump water as you did, fold over top and give a quick shake to ensure water mostly covers heat element, then lean pouch at a slight angle (80 degrees-ish) against a rock or something. Top fold should not be so tight that steam build up cannot escape.

Just for some cultural context, egg rolls in America are actually called "spring rolls" in Chinese. So the egg roll you see here is a completely different type of dish than you'd see if you tried to order an egg roll in America. The egg roll is supposed to be a sort of spiral sheet of egg omelet, with a pork filling. Google image "猪肉蛋卷" for some examples of what the dish actually is supposed to be.

About that "pre measured water pouch", it's actually an activating agent/liquid for the flameless heater, it also said do not drink the liquid. I can read Chinese so I figured it would be good to tell you that.

it would really be cool if you could find the actual people who design these meals and ingredients before they were approved. So you could talk with the chefs about what went into making them or the companies that made them . assuming some of the older ones are still alive

I've gotten Tamales in the Mexican Menu MREs, that were mangled like that in packaging. I guess the packaging, and sealing processes (Incidentally, I have a degree in Industrial Automation, and Robotics, but never worked in one of those factories) may cause some inconsistencies in the finished product. You're talking about vacuum sealing here, a process that can warp structural steel in some cases, so yeah. That spiral lump may very well have been 2 eggroll shapes going in. I'm pretty sure this is an American manufacture MRE for the PLA with Mandarin printing. They even use USDOD type anachronym word order in descriptions like Eggrolls, Pork. Probably the same factory, to order, then shipped overseas to China. We make a lot of these meals for a lot of other countries.

Hi Steve. Tried the type 09 (Green) and type 13 (Tan) PLA ration. The egg roll still there. Even its relatively fresh, still dry, hard, taste weird, no improvement.
