Thinking of spending £70,000 on a new Boxster? Before you do, consider instead a Ferrari F430. One of Maranello's most important cars ever made - this is the quintessential analogue supercar, and a bit of a bargain.

Jay I worked for Ferrari in Sydney and can assure you that the "snow/ice" button does get used even in the Australian climate. It's used as follows. When a Ferrari owning couple got to dinner or a function involving liquid refreshments and the male Ferrari owner has over indulged he would ask his good lady to drive home. He would then press the snow/ice button. It starts the car off from rest in 2nd gear and upshifts before things get hectic. In essence turning it into a low powered car. None the wiser the good lady would be proud of her management of the Ferrari. This practice was so common that the snow/ice button is known in the Ferrari owners club as the "wife button".

This was the car for me then & it still is now. Probably the one that got me into cars in the first place - being 24 now, I was 10 when these were in their prime. I own a similar F430 Spider F1 in Blue Pozzi and I adore it. Indeed the last analoge car Ferrari built, superb handling and ride. Brakes (ceramic though) are excellent. Steering is great, not the best attribute though. But the F430 exceeds in daily practice in every circumstance. Highway, city driving, cross-country or the Alps. We drove it many times from The Netherlands to Southern France or Italy on holiday and it can manage every situation. Just super!!!

I took my Spider to the Alps last year and to my absolute surprise it started rev matching on the downshifts when I was 'on it' and it's not done it since. You can do it manually and I frequently do but the Alps - what an experience. I test drove a California T a few months ago and whilst I didn't hate it, it was an absolute relief to get back into my F430 with all the noise, the connection and the feel of a Ferrari. Every time I think of selling mine, I take it out for a drive...

Great video ... agree the F1 box on the F430 is decent ... and the F430 is underrated and really not that bad to run. The only issue I've had (other than eating ball joints) is a starter motor failure (which was a DENSO Japanese part) other than that it's been very reliable and thoroughly enjoyable. 12k miles in 5 years ... Longer journeys include, Le Mans x3, NC500 and this year Alps and various museums planned Cayman 987.2 for daily F430 for weekend 340R for special occasions

Awesome video as always. Apologies if someone else has already commented on this but I suspect the requirement to have the ignition on to be able to use the boot release toggle switch will have been a security thing, as opposed to being something they hadn’t revised/updated yet, as with your scuderia. If you left the car unattended with the roof down, and didn’t require the ignition to be on for the boot release, anyone would be able to help themselves to the release button and then the contents of the boot. 😊

Still driving my '08 manual spider F430 bought new. They were making only 16M's after my car so I probably have one of the newest plain spiders. I love it still. The 360's chassis was known internally as the 131 and the 430 as the 131Evo. Naturally my GT-R's number plate was 35 and my Ferrari's is 131. (The Bimmer is 39.) The key thing is that previous Ferraris needed timing belts changed every two years regardless of mileage, an engine-out ordeal, while the 430 has a chain. Likewise every other aspect is finally suitable for daily driving, including reliability. Only issue in 15 years was a wire harness line breaking, between the ECU and ignition switch unfortunately, but otherwise it's very durable and utterly reliable. You refer to it as fragile but I don't think so.

I've read very mixed comments on reliability from owners, some straight up saying they experienced "maintenance nightmares" with their F430s. Glad you were spared. I'm very intrigued by the Spider and would love to buy one over a Boxter GTS (new) but F1 versions are well over $100K in the States now and converted manuals are $125K and up. Unwanted attention aside, $3K minimum for services a year is also a bit of a deterrent. The noise is certainly beautiful though. Curious how firm the ride in these is?

@@gtsspeed2619 I'm almost positive about the two years thing: how long do you think the service interval was if not two years?? If it could be done through a hatch I stand corrected. I'm almost positive the 355 required an engine out for that, though, so maybe I'm just misremembering the 360.

You're so right about the tires. I bought my F430 in 2020 from first owner and it still had the original tires. Owner: yeah but it only has 11.000km! but your car feels like WOOD man!!. I put the michelin PS4S and it changed the game completely. Then I bought a Manual modena which had pirellis from 2010. Then I bought the 599 which had pirellis from 2013. What the f--- is wrong with ferrari owners! The cost of new tires compared to the safety and the feeling at the wheel, I just don't get it.

8:15 I have the ceramics (which was standard in Japan in 2008 along with the shield emblem). Remember they take an incredible 30kg+ off the unsprung weight, and while I've never driven one with steel socks I cannot imagine it doesn't make an improvement in ride. The brake pedal does however take some time to master: you push down to apply brakes, but merely relieve pressure (without actual motion, it seems) to modulate them. Its just tricky enough to learn that one feels smug for having done so.

You are correct it makes a massive difference. All the springs and damper rates along with the calibration for the e-diff and mannetino settings were developed for CCM’s. It is now known that they put the old steel brakes on in some markets to keep the MSRP down. I bought my car New and then when the steel discs and pads needed replacing I had the factory upgrade. Could not believe the difference. Until you have driven one on CCM’s you have a different car.

If you want sound, take the precats out (which you should really do anyway). My advice is don't heel-toe the TCU won't have a clue what you're doing. The lack of downshift blip (at low revs) is due to a couple of things: - they are programmed to be smoother as the TCU (rightly, generally) thinks you're driving more leisurely - the exhaust valves will be closed. If you keep the valves open all the time, you'll probably hear more of a downshift blip even at lowish revs The 430 was designed to do both quiet and loud, which when it drones like a bitch with the valves left open, is a very welcome thing (imho)

A friend of mine had one of these. It cost him $1/mile in maintenance not counting fuel, oil, tires, or insurance. When he sold it it had 32,000 miles (he put 16k on it in 3 years) and it needed the whole roof assembly replaced because all the joint pins were worn out, the parts for the roof replacement cost $30,000. Fortunately the dealer he traded it in to didn't notice. If he fixed the roof himself he would have spent about $50,000 in maintenance to run the car for 3 years and 16,000 miles. It really turned me off of Ferrari.

Fantastic cars which these days offer very good value for money when you look at the prices of classic Fords, BMW's and certain 911's. Harry Metcalf reviewed a lovely blue 430 Spyder with a manual gearbox a couple of years back which I loved the look of though the F1 box in the 430 seems to be a bit improvement on the one in the 360. I loved the looks of the 458 but not a fan of the steering wheel with all the buttons and controls on.

Fantastic review! Can confirm everything you said, though I own a Coupe. Have a Tubi exhaust which makes it a totally different car in terms of responsiveness. Got it installed after the “usual” header cracks and wanted to fix the issue for good. Also the sound improves quite a bit when valves are open. And imho it remains the most beautiful V8 to this day.

You mention around @24:30 that there ain't no Boxster that does that (referring to the sound), but that's one of the places where I think the (right) Boxster actually does. I was reminded of your 981 GTS review and went back and listened to it, and while yes, it's different, I think it holds up in the sound department. The one thing holding that Boxster back would be the stupid gearing, though. I also personally think the F430 looks significantly nicer than the Boxster, which reminds me how subjective looks and sounds are! Anyway, I loved both of these reviews (and cars), and I think this F430 Spyder might be the goldilocks Ferrari. What a stunning experience!

When summer comes, we have an Italian Car breakfast near Alton, just south of Basingstoke. Happens every other month between April and October on the first Saturday of the month. Absolutely unofficial with no tickets or anything. At the Departure Lounge Cafe. The next meeting is on 3rd April (morning). James, it might be a bit far from you, but you would be welcome! And anyone else who owns an Italian car and don't mind to buy a breakfast (or not).

@@eze8970 😅 Next thing you will say October is autumn. It is always summer for Italian Car breakfast. Even if the weather is bad, you look at those cars and feel gooooooood! Especially if some rarities come up like Diablo or Pantera. Or even Pantera 2 as happened before.

@@bobmcthran215 this Saturday, 3rd June. Usually there was a small gathering at McDonald's, retail park with leaving as a convoy at 9am towards Alton. Don't know if a convoy thing is happening these days (without an Italian car I go 'solo') . I usually aim to be at the cafe by 10am, otherwise a queue for food is hopeless 😂.

Such a great car, I loved both my 360 spider and 430 spider and value for money they were amazing compared with the later 458. Don’t get me wrong I loved my 458 but these are spot on. Go get one and put a smile on your face, don’t worry about the running costs they aren’t too bad. Just make your it’s been looked after and sort any little issues immediately and it will see you right. 🤟

As a bi-product, selecting the Icy Road setting also stops the exhaust valves from opening above 3000 RPM. Very useful for the noise check before track days. On the ceramic brake thing, yes they are great on track but they also keep the wheels almost completely free of brake dust; just a wipe and they're clean. Contrary to urban legend, the discs should last the life of the car. And yes some cars do see a track occasionally: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rs55bNqm17nKfpc.html

Absolutely agreed about suspension feeling harsh depending on tyres. I have the Pilot 4S on my Audi A5 Black Edition. When I first put them on the car felt very hard, but when lowered to their 'lowest recommended' pressure the suspension felt pleasant again. Not standard S-line suspension pleasant on B-roads, but far better than they did before I took the pressure down.

Fantastic review and what a great car. I almost want a coupe F430, but I just can’t get into the looks. At all. I have and love my Challenge Stradale. To me that’s the pinnacle Ferrari personally. The F430 and Scud ARE better cars, but there is just something I can’t get into about them. It might honestly just be the looks, as dumb as that is. For some odd reason too, I actually like the archaic F1 transmission in the CS. It keeps you involved IMO. And the interior in the Scud, it is a million times nicer than the CS, freaking beautiful, but again, there is just something about the simplicity of the CS I prefer. I guess this is just an example of us all having our own taste. LOL

IMO the perfect spec for a F430..... Rosso Corsa, Crema, and a bit of carbon...... JayEmm, talk some sense to me. Big Ferrari fan, I've also got a S1 Elise. With inflation at 10% and poor interest returns surely it's better to put my money in one of these, and enjoy life instead of thinking "what if".

The 430 and 599 are that single generation of Ferrari where both the flappy paddle gearbox and the interior were usable and easy to operate as well. If I had modern Ferrari money I'd pass simply because of the damn interior

You need to review my BMW 325 E93 convertible. All very mainstream, but at the price of the bang average dross (£6k in my case with low mileage). Plus it is a proper four seater. No way near as good as a Ferrari convertible but IS affordable and can be used every day.

This. I just checked nationwide in the US and the highest mileage berlinetta was around $120K, or GBP96K with an average of $150K for a low mileage coupe. Consider yourselves lucky if you can acquire one of these for 70K in the UK. That said, amazing review and had me looking at pricing almost immediately.
