First impressions are always lasting impressions…so, Make a grand entrance with Mountaineer. With sophisticated styling and remarkable comfort, AutoWeek said “Mountaineer is an absolutely beautiful-looking vehicle inside and out.”
The Mercury Mountaineer was introduced in 1996 for the 1997 model year and was based on the 2nd Generation Ford Explorer as a more premium offering of the Explorer, with a tad nicer interior and up level exterior design cues. Other than that, the Mountaineer and Explorer were essentially the exact same vehicle. In 2002, the Mountaineer received a major redesign, as did the Ford Explorer and related Lincoln Aviator, which ultimately was able to separate the Explorer and the Mountaineer style-wise. And, with the introduction of the up level Aviator, the Mountaineer is no longer king of the hill.
Our Mountaineer is actually representative of the third and final generation for this and the Aviator. The third-generation was introduced in 2005 for the 2006-2010 model year. Mountaineer was extensively updated for 2006, with a redesigned frame and suspension; a new and more powerful V8; and an even newer six-speed automatic transmission. For 2007, "MOUNTAINEER" badging was returned to the doors (after a four-year absence). Due to the decision to dissolve the Mercury brand in June of 2010, the Mountaineer was gone and the Explorer underwent a major redesign, no longer sharing body panels across divisional counterparts.
Due to the March 2006 closure of the St. Louis Assembly Plant, our Mountaineer was produced at the Louisville Truck Plant in Kentucky in October of 2006.

Nice review! I just bought the same vehicle last summer. Also black on the exterior, but with the tan leather inside (I hate black interiors ... looks like the cheapest Kia or something) I have a 2003 Explorer Sport Trac XLT V6 4WD, but that's only rated for towing about 5200 pounds. I got a larger toy-hauler with GVWR of 7,000 pounds. I definitely wanted the Gen-4 Explorer platform to get the 4.6 V8 with the VVT upgrade. Power to 2005 was under 250 HP for the Explorer's 4.6, but in 2006 and the addition of VVT that jumped to almost 300 HP. And Ford matched that with the 6-speed tranny, though the V6 still got the old 5-speed. The result is that the 2006-2010 4.6 V8 models use LESS FUEL than the V6. The whole vehicle grew in size, for more interior space, and the interior got a huge push into the "modern look" with lots of parts from the F-150. I didn't want an Explorer ... there's so many. But they never sold the Mercury SUVs in Canada, so its different. Oh, the other difference from your review vehicle is the big screen in the dash with navigation system. The original DVD for maps is gone, but there's a copied/burned disc in there. However, it doesn't work. So, no Nav. Still the audio controls expose some DSP-enhanced sound options, depending where folks are seated. If you're on your own, there's a mode that optimizes the audio so the surrround speakers cater exclusively to the driver's position, and the sound is actually impressive! In addition, when using the radio on FM, the display gives the Name of the Song, plus the Name of the Artist (I'm used to that) PLUS the Name of the Album/CD, and I think the release date. Anyway, I love my Mountaineer. Even though I had to spend another CAD$3000+ to repair rusty rocker panels. The purchase cost in Minneapolis, plus state fees, exchange from CAD, Canadian Federal and Provincial taxes all in, I was still under $5k, so with the rust repairs I'm around CAD$8k (almost US$6k) but its worth more than CA$10k up here, because trucks rust out fast. Its shocking how comfortable these vehicles are to drive long distances. I'd like to talk to someone who's driven these and the prior generation to compare the ride and comfort. I think they nailed it on these ones. It feels like a totally different vehicle compared to my 2003 Sport Trac, which is mechanically the earlier-gen Explorer. And fuel consumption is good, at least without the trailer. Its got almost 1/4 million miles on it, but I was getting 400 miles to a 20 gallon tank on the Interstates across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Anyway, thanks for the review. I learned that the headrests fold down. Maybe the seats will go down easier that way? ;) And the spare tire elevator/hoist access. I need to check that. The ONE THING THAT I WISH IT HAD WAS TOWING MIRRORS. But I got a pair of "strap-on" units from Craigslist for $20- and they work, and haven't fallen off yet :)

Probably the best Mercury Mountaineer review I've come across. Excellent. I just purchased a Mountaineer Premier awd v8 in the same color combo. Great truck for the $ solid feeling. I particularly like the classic boxier suv style. Not a fan of the rounded body and squished upper rear design of the most newer mid size Suv's.
