It's quirky but I love it. If you're looking for your first bike, or a cheap little mule to blat around city streets the MT03 has all you need.

Do the kev mod, and open up the air box and it fixes the majority of the low rpm bucking. I’ve got a xtx and doing those mods transformed it.

Thanks for your comments except the one about the Yamaha Virago! I kept one Virago 535cc for two years, between two (2) Suzuki Savage alias Boulevard 40,a single-cylinder 650cc with belt drive. After the second Savage, I purchased a second-hand BMW 650cc Scarver that I rode from 2005 'till 2017! I'm now riding every day a Yamaha MT03 660cc that I really like a lot. Could be my last bike since I'll be 75 on December 1st :)

Looking to buy one of these as my first bike for the A2, it really looks like one of the best cheap-ish options for this license. Funny that you mention the Virago 535 being a POS, a friend of mine got it years ago and we have tinkered with it a lot, specially the carbs... replacing the carb boots on that thing will leave you bleeding, weeping, and cursing. Cursing A LOT, LOL.

While people are looking at the MT-03, everyone's sleeping on the Aprilia Pegaso Strada; 1. It has the same engine and gearbox as the MT-03 (it's made in Italy), but it has a higher spec tune with about 50hp and 3-5nm of torque over the MT-03 and is tuned to be more rev happy and punchier at the top of the revs 2. It has Brembo brakes front and rear as standard, as well as upgraded suspension (also Sachs rear but with rebound and preload adjustability) 3. It weighs 168 kg dry, due to lighter materials used in the wheels and the frame design 4. It has an upgraded dash derived from the RSV 1000 of that time, and also features a full fuel gauge 5. It power wheelies quite easily ;) 6. It has a great clutch setup, very light but with no mishaps. Rev matching is suuuper easy and it never lets the revs go down during shifts 7. It has a rising rate linkage for the rear shock, compared to the fixed shock on the MT-03, which greatly improves the way it handles bumps and uneven surfaces as well as stability in corners 8. It has the worlds most comfortable seat. I could spend hours upon end and I would be as comfortable as if I was sitting in an armchair watching tv. You stay exactly where you want to sit, and the material is soft enough to absorb impacts, but not so soft that it becomes swampy 9. It has a ton of storage under the seat, as well as an extra "glove box" on top of the fuel tank which is electronically locked/operated, and handy to keep wallets, phone, or a powerbank if you want to hook up a gps/your phone for long periods of time 10. It costs the same as the MT-03, and I have no idea how Aprilia managed to do that. Legit best A2 bike I've ridden, and I'd still chose it any day even over an SV650, MT-07, CBR500R, and all the typical A2 bikes like the Duke 390 and Ninjas

This bike is so underrated. I've owned countless bikes over the last 33 years of riding, of all shapes and engine sizes and this bike is as much fun as you'll have on any bike. Try hard to find one with the Akrapovich end cans installed; they're a must imo as it sounds pretty shit without them. Reliability wise; I had mine from 2008 - 2013 and it never once missed a beat. True it's not a really fast bike but it's light, really chuckable and great fun to ride. And I think it looks great.
@RarefiedRoad

Really miss mine, I'm actually thinking about getting an other one, it was most fun bike I've ever ridden, that said I did have the dampness problem with the electrics, nothing is protected from the weather so it did cost me a few quid in electronics and what not! But in fairness it was my only mode of transport, for 3 years and although it was garaged overnight it was used daily. My other problems with it were the yearly steering bearing and cush drive rubbers. I'd suggest that they're great as a second bike, or an only bike if you have a car, but not ideal as a commuter which was unfortunately a selling point. My favourite thing about it was that those foot pegs scraped concrete very easily, thanks to the lightweight and wide bars it was ridiculously flickable! Nothing could keep up in the bends! So yeah I've owned bikes that go 50% faster, and accelerate A LOT faster, but I haven't had that much fun on a bike since owning my MT03!

I see that you change your bikes a lot, so maybe next time, or the time after that. 😉 It is the best value bike i have ever owned! I traveled across Europe on mine this summer. If you ever come across Denmark, you can take mine out for a run. :) BTW. I just stalked my way to your IG account and gave you a follow. You can go look at my latest post (from today) and see for yourself the product of your “influencer business”. 🤣 Looking forward for your future posts. Merry Christmas

I've owned mine for 6 years, and still love it. Agile, punchy through the twisties and it's been super reliable. Arrow cans give it a nice tone, but being a single isn't the smoothest. Build quality isn't amazing, I've ridden it into one winter so does have a fair bit of corrosion. Overall great bike!

Thanks for supporting the channel. It is a shame that it's gotten to the stage that people have to choose their bikes based on how likely they are to be stolen, but I'd say you're safer not bringing a bike like that into central London. Ive thought about maintenance videos but I'd say my basic mechanical knowledge isn't good enough yet to offer much value. MC Garage is the best channel for simple maintenance.

Hey man, I just saw,you had a Balius, so I think you are my man! Here is the thing! I have now a Bandit 250, and planing to buy a MT03 660. How did it feel to sit on a 660ccm single after a 250 i4? Wasn't it to harsh, too unsophisticated, too torquey-less revvy? I hope, you know what I mean?! Wasn't it a too big change? I love the look of these MTs, and I hate pray every morning to the lil Bandito to start, and run normally. Thanks man for the answer! Cheers!

For me I love it when the bike keeps on revving, yes you do lack that lower end but it makes up for that extra more revs. I've been on a couple of twins/singles and though they have more low end torque, once you get past that point it you can kinda feel the engine struggling like gasping for air but it's already at peak. I guess you will be changing gears but sometimes you just wish it would keep on going but it doesn't. Also a lot of vibrations when you get closer to maximum revs.

Think you need to read the fuel pump if filling up at 100miles,going by it's heavier sister, minimum range should be 150miles(45mpg),whereas around 65mpg is average, and that's with a guy who's ridden over 100k kilometres on his Tenere...3 gallon is 13.5L approx, 195miles,plus reserve!

Thanks for this excellent review! I got my exam coming up next week, so with any luck I'll be riding around in the wild on 2 wheels quite soon. I'd been looking into buying a used MT-03 as my first bike for a while, and this video's made it so I definitely think it's worth a test ride. One of the reasons would be because I figure the bike would ride and handle somewhat similarly to the bike I'm learning on right now, a 2018 Kawasaki Z650. Given that you only really start learning to ride after you've got your lisence, I'd say it's smart to start on something that won't take alot of getting used to. Aside from some more modern luxuries like ABS, would I be correct in that assumption? From what I know they're both quite torque-y, very agile and have an upright riding position. Why not just pick up a used Z650, you ask? Well, I like the sound of the single-cylinder engine, and the look of this particular bike. And I've seen customised MT-03's that look absolutely badass, so if I grow really attached to it, I might actually consider that too.
@RarefiedRoad
@RarefiedRoad 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think it will probably be fairly similar ergonomically but the MT03 is more agricultural, my guess is it will feel pretty basic to you and as you say the engine characteristics will be different with this being a single cylinder so I would definitely recommend taking it for a test ride if you can, just to see if you get on with it. The benefit to being mechanically pretty basic is that you wont be so precious with it which is definitely a benefit for your first bike. Best of luck with your exam.
@barttieman
@barttieman 5 жыл бұрын
@@RarefiedRoadWee little update; passed the exam, got a testride on an MT03 ('08 all-black version with 24K km on the counter). Loved the heck out of it, was doing tight figure-8's and such as soon as I got on it. I found it still quite comfortable at 120 km/h, too. Not sure if my neck/arms/arse will appreciate me doing that for hours on end, but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it. Talked the guy at the dealership into putting crashbars on it at no charge, but I'll have to wait about a week for those to arrive and for them to give it it's maintainance and such before I can take it home. Just counting down the days now... Also, I understand now what you meant with it being more 'agricultural'. It's a far less sophisticated-feeling machine than the Z650's. But I think I actually like it more for it, at least for now.
@RarefiedRoad
@RarefiedRoad 5 жыл бұрын
@@barttieman Good news man. Well done passing your test. Really glad you like the bike. I know what you mean about enjoying the agricultural nature, it feels like something you don't have to be so delicate or precious with. Just hope your neck/arms/arse can stand up to it. Thank you. I think you'd be fine on this bike. It has decent leg room for me the only thing I think you'll find is that because of the vertical riding position you'll get blasted by the wind at high speeds.

Worlds apart. Everything from the riding position to the engine character are very different. The Yamaha is really basic, it's a very unsubtle bike but maybe you'll prefer it, it depends what you're looking for.

Is the mt-03 from build year 2008 good on the highways? Or do you get blown away?
@RarefiedRoad

It's more a general comfort issue I think but the upright position does leave you vulnerable to the wind. It wouldn't be my pick for highways though either way.

Hey, help me out. I'm like 3 months away from buying my 660cc Yamaha MT-03, Is it comfortable for everyday use with about 50km trips ? Is it loud enough to be noticed? would you recommend?
@RarefiedRoad
@RarefiedRoad 5 жыл бұрын
It is fine for anything up to about an hour without hurting too much, the seat isn't the most comfortable but it's a good little commuter. and it is loud enough on it's own, but they sound a lot better with an aftermarket exhaust if you can find one. I would happily recommend it.

Bought a 2006 one with 20,000km last year as my first bike. For out-of-town twisty roads it's amazing - a lot of fun, handles well, brakes are powerful, even fairly comfortable. It's very engaging with the upright sitting position. In town it works as well, can get hot in traffic in peak of summer if you don't lanesplit and sit still. The throttle is a bit jerky when going slow. I've also ridden a 2013 honda twin (cb500f) and an older kawasaki er500 and can say that the MT03 is the best a2 bike I've ridden so far so if you're thinking of getting one go for it. If you find one with Akrapovic exhaust spend the extra money - I regret not getting one with better pipes. It's loud stock with baffles removed but the akra's are worth it.

That hard engine braking what you told is not told by any other reviewers who typically borrowed it from showrooms. I just saw it in comment section of another video. It is so dangerous to see reviews which only tell positive points.

Around 5 minutes we hear the bike is snatching below 3000 revs. I had an earlier version and I’d describe it as a wicked dog. Below 30mph you need to slip the clutch almost constantly or at least be ready to do it. In the wet you need to be prepared for the back wheel to lock from snatch. Stupid bad throttle response. How this got past the review journals, shows they never ride at normal speed, or they’re corrupt.
