Here's a quick video highlighting all of the major issues i've had with my 2008 Acura TL base sedan since I purchased it a year ago. I've put 27,000 miles on this vehicle and it continues to impress me every day with its near-deal blend of comfort, power, efficiency, and sportiness. However, there are several electrical and fit and finish problems that an Acura TL owner can expect to encounter as his or her vehicle surpasses 150,000 miles. Check out my earlier video on how to fix the bluetooth module when a HandsFreeLink problem occurs, and if you have any questions or comments related to this video, please enter them in the section below. I hope you enjoy the video!

If you care about your vehicle and want it to be as trouble free as possible, DO NOT run your vehicle that low on fuel. Never get to or go below a 1/4 tank of fuel. Fuel in the tank keeps your fuel pump cool and will extend it's life. Never wait for the "Low Fuel" light to come on.

I had a 2006 TL that was a complete lemon. She was pretty, but whoever had her before me didn't treat her well. I spent over $4k on new transmission the first year I had her, then she blew a head gasket. I don't know how...I never ran her hot. Acura wanted $6 to replace the head gasket, an independent shop wanted $4k. I couldn't do it. Had to turn her loose. That was 5 years ago. I just bought a 2008 TL that looks just like her (plus fog lamps, turn indicators, different tail lights yano) and I'm in LOVE again. I always said I'd get another. She's gorgeous and runs like a dream. Absolutely one of the most underrated cars ever made.

@@schwibz Unfortunately, the EXACT same thing happened to my 2008 Acura TL. Unbelievable. The transmission went...literally dropped when I accelerated one day. Sounded like I ran over a bowling ball. I replaced that, then not 6 months later, it blew a head gasket. Again, this car never ran hot. Ever. I'm convinced the transmission and head gasket are connected somehow. I couldn't even find a reputable shop that would fix it, and would only put a new engine in...IF they could find one. They found one in California and to have it shipped and installed was $4k. I had to junk that one too. No more Acuras for me. I'm thrilled with my new Kia Optima Sx Turbo now!

Hey,your old buddy here,soaking in all your videos.My 07 TL had the same problem with phone system draining the battery($500.repair) and it has been an issue for Acura TL,Rl's for a long time.Mine drained the battery even though I didn't use the phone Acura should accept this and recall or pay for repairs in my opinion. Mine only has 80k miles so not too many issues,had to replace tire pressure monitor in one tire.But notice you don't mention the crack dash that mine has and many others from looking around the web. It's a very common problem even for Acura TL's that were garaged kept.Mine has major cracks all over the dash-egad! I got to give it to ya guy to offer good reviews on a car that will cost you $2300 for an a/c compressor,you are a different kind of car owner.Enjoy your videos

If you're "knocking" noise is closer to a "ticking" noise, it could just be the Evap solenoid. I have an '03 CL that makes a ticking noise from the engine bay that even my passengers can hear. Unplugged a module in the engine bay that seemed to be the origin of the ticking noise, and the ticking stopped. From forums, it's normal for the solenoid to tick incesantly like that.

Pull the ignition coils and check to make sure your spark plugs are tightened properly. This happened to my 08 Acura TL. One of the plugs managed to work it self free and was being hammered agents the ignition coil, making loud ticking and knocking sound. Was reading a thread that said once and a while spark plug from factory were not being torqued correctly. Start your car listen around the engine with stethoscope or long screw driver for knocking sound.

I've had my 08 TL for 5 years now and I love it. However, a few months ago my transmission seems to have to developed a serious problem. I'll put it in Drive and first gear doesn't engage. It takes long for it to finally engage. Aside from that, I've had problems very similar to this video. Dashboard bulb has gone out, air conditioning has lost some of its cooling effectiveness. I have not had any rusting or Bluetooth problems though. Leather has held up surprisingly well. Sometimes cars will develop in-cabin rattles as it ages, mine thankfully still rides quietly and solid.

07 with 162k here. I think the auto dimming mirror is always going to dim during the day if you keep your lights on all the time. If you're just using DRLs and are on auto lights or lights off it shouldn't dim when the mirror is set on auto. The transmission is seemingly invincible but I was wondering if yours also has a fairly harsh 1-2 shift when flooring it in D from a stop. In fact all the shifts are much harsher above 4500 RPM - I'm guessing it's normal but just wanted to see if yours does the same since we both have the newer auto instead of the one from the 04-06 which was different. Also, in regular driving do you notice the 2-3 shift a bit slower and smoother than the others? Thanks love your channel and as a fellow owner I wish you also the best of luck. I've only had mine for about 3 months now and not a single problem to speak of, except I also think the AC is a bit weak. Cheers.
@BornToDriveOfficial
@BornToDriveOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the transmission on yours shifts exactly like mine. It shifts hard from 1-2 when flooring it, and it shifts harder at high rpm than when driving normally. And my 2-3 shift is smoother than the rest of the shifts. I'll keep an eye out if the mirror dims automatically with the headlights on. The mirror has been working better recently, but it's a little shaky and loose over bumps. Unfortunately, there might not be anything I can do about it without replacing it entirely. Otherwise, the car has been great and I'm going to make an update video on it later in July. Thanks for continuing to follow my channel!

I had some similar issues with my 2006. AC recharged last year. A bit of rust in the same area. Hands free link had to be unplugged after going through multiple batteries and a starter motor, I finally researched it myself and disconnected it on my own. Two window lifts, I can't believe you made it that many miles without replacing. The motor mounts are pitiful and had to be replaced, if you have a delay rolling off in first gear, or hear a knocking when you start moving, your motor mounts are probably bad. Suspension parts are failing, the shocks are fine, but the actual arms are pitiful, multiple parts replaced to get the alignment right after never hitting anything more than potholes. The side mirror tilt in reverse thing gets stuck sometimes and just sits there clicking until you switch back into drive. There were some steering parts replaced under a recall. Leather cracked on the driver seat, I do use leather care products and clean it more than most, and it still seems to be a common issue. The armrest leather on mine wore out also. The leather around the door panel is falling off. All of this is in the first 100k miles. I'm surprised that you could be impressed with it. The door closing sounds nice. The materials on the interior feel nice. It drives nicely when everything is working. This is my first Japanese car and with all of the hype around their quality and reliability I am very disappointed in it. It *FEELS* like it's high quality, but everything keeps breaking.

@@glasser2819 I've still got the TL. In the 3 years since I made that post... Let's see. The dashboard is cracked now. I had to replace the leather on the driver's seat. The cover for the door pocket fell off. The springs on the interior storage compartments broke. Center arm rest fell off now, I had to reattach it. iPod connector broke. The headliner is coming down. The transmission jerks if you do anything beyond driving like the pedals are made of egg shells. It just randomly overheated last summer, the mechanic couldn't find a problem. Last week I got a new alternator. A few weeks before that I got a new harmonic balancer pulley. I've had 2 new power steering pumps in the last 3 years, there was another one before that that I forgot about. I've got 128k miles on it now. That really not very many for this many issues. I've lost count of how many batteries it's had. Somewhere around 12 to 15 or so. I can only imagine the cost of having just the same issues in a BMW or Audi. It would cost at least double. Most of these fixes have been under $500. But to hear people brag about how they've "never had a problem" with their Honda/Acura, it's just bullshit. They've probably owned their car less than a year, and it was either new or the previous owner already fixed everything. Then I go talk to them and list all of the issues I've had, and suddenly they've had most of the same problems. But somehow "never had a problem". I guess the only thing that is a problem is replacing the engine or transmission. All other repairs are somehow maintenance. When you fix things that aren't supposed to break, that's not maintenance.

I haven't had any leaks though. Search for a technical service bulletin (TSB) on the 2004-2008 Acura TL, as I believe there is one that explains a common source of power steering fluid leaks.

My 05 is rusted exactly the same way in the same spot. It was due to having the rear bumper cover replaced, and someone didn't do the prep right.. My quote was $1,700.00 to fix it! I also have the same issues with the outside mirrors. I just leave the power mirror setting in the off position, and they stay put. I'm the 2nd owner of mine, and it has 186k and change on it. While it hasn't been exactly trouble free, it is still a turn key car, and 99% of everything works. It's had a clutch, flywheel, both axles, motor mounts, EGR, fuel pump, starter, 3 batteries, rear calipers and hoses, both lower ball joints, as well as the bushings for the frt lower control arms replaced. This on top of regular maintenance. ( including timing belt at 100k.) It doesn't knock, and uses NO oil, and NO leaks. I dunno about you, but mine has had issues with the variable assist power steering working when it feels like it when parking. It's been like this from the day the original owner bought it. The steering sensor was replaced, as was the pump. But every so often, the p/s just stops working when say parallel parking, and it's a real bear! So that's that! PS you won't know 'fun' until you have to replace 1 of those HID bulbs... ;)

Robert Nguyen Make sure that the timing belt has been replaced, that scheduled services have been completed, and that it has no accidents or salvage titles on the CarFax. A one accident car is probably fine if no airbags deployed and it was professionally repaired. Make sure the Bluetooth works, that there's no rust on the under carriage of the car, and that the dashboard and seats aren't cracked. Have it inspected by a mechanic for $50-$100 as well just to make sure there's no underlying problems. If there is, you can use that as a negotiating tool on the price. Good luck, and great choice!

Knocking or clacking? Knocking is some issue with ignition timing and fuel (too low octane? TL requires premium - check the manual). Clacking is caused by sticky valves. The old owner was driving gently and that is why you probably have sludge over valves. SeaFoam it or give to Acura for professional detergent cleaning and this will help. Other than that use Mystic Marvel that has worked on all cars for decades reducing mechanical noises effectively witoit any damage if used in right proportions.

The knocking noise is probably because the previous owner used 87 octane unleaded gas. Acura engines have a compression ratio of 10 to 1 which is higher than average so it needs 91 octane premium gas to prevent knocking, even though the car has a knock sensor. It can only help so much

Often that kind of knocking will occur under load rather than at idle, but it's possible. The J series engines sometimes experience piston slap, especially in cold weather at idle, so that would be my guess here.

Ace Ventura octane level has nothing to do with engine knocking... this car doesn't make that kind of power to use premium fuel... it only makes 270hp and no it's not to the wheels... I've seen 500hp turbocharged mustangs run pump gas at 87 octane run perfectly fine. It comes and goes... depends on how the engine behaves and how much you beat on it. These cars are very solid. I would prefer a manual because If the trans needs a clutch or the trans needs to be replaced. Than I can just buy it and fix it myself. I'm not too familiar with auto's.

@BornToDriveOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
I would still buy a 2008 TL over a newer accord for the sporty feel and because the interior quality is better. The TL still feels more luxurious overall when compared to a 2008-2012 Honda Accord V6. The only thing I wish I did was buy my TL with less than 100,000 miles. I expect my TL to last at least 200,000 miles, but I didn't realize that I would drive my car 20-25k miles per year when I bought it. It hasn't cost me very much to maintain, about $2k a year in gas, $135 a year in oil changes, and $800 per set of tires (I bought summer and snow tires). But some of the radio and Bluetooth electronics tend to burn out after 100k miles, and you'll have to do a transmission fluid drain and refill every 30k miles or so. So w/o insurance, expect a TL to cost $3,000-3,500 a year to drive and maintain

The Altima comes with either a CVT or a 6-speed manual, and I'd get the 6-speed with the V6 if you want fun. The 4-cylinder with the CVT is the least fun of the three cars, but also the most fuel efficient. The Acura TL is the most luxurious in terms of ride and handling, and probably the most reliable. I'm not sure what's wrong with mine though. I just bought the same car: a 2008 TL with only 45k miles, but there's gotta be something wrong with the fuel injector or something, because mine always reads my average MPG as 17-18. I would say that the throttle position sensor has a problem, the mass airflow sensor has a problem, your engine air intake filter is bad, or you have bad fuel injectors. Try adding a big bottle of Chevron fuel system cleaner to an empty tank and then fill up your car with gas and reset your engine control unit via this procedure before going to a mechanic: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sLiTg6ub2tjMYZs.html

mine has rust in the exact same spot. Also, dont waste the $ getting the hands free link fixed. it only works with specific phones that are way out of date.

the knocking noise is the hydralic lifters on these j32 series v6, they just wear out over time, considering your car has over 160000 miles, nothing to do with gas, your car seems to run very smooth so i would just ignore it, and change oil more frequently to make it last longer

these cars dont knock unless u run them out of oil. if u hear a tapping noise when the engine is under 2000rpm is most likely a valve out of adjustment. most hondas the valves are supposed to be adjusted around 30k mikes. i bet your car has never been done, unless someone did it when they changed the timing belt. one valve thats out of adjustment will cause a tap noise especially when the car is cold.

There's no service history for the valves being adjusted, so I'm guessing that's the problem. I'll look into getting that adjustment done. Thanks!
