Thank you all for tuning in to Super Mario Diagnostics!
Today we have a real time diag on a 2008 Ford Mustang 4.0L. Unfortunately the repair was declined but I believe that this video may be very useful to those who wish to use pulse sensors to diagnose mechanical faults.
I hope you all enjoy, like, share, comment and subscribe!

Very late comment but curious your thoughts on why the intake pull on cylinder 2 still had a similar pull to good cylinders when your leak down indicates a possible stuck or cracked exhaust valve? I'd be curious to know if there was more to this repair than just exhaust valve?

Mario I am late comer to your channel so I am late on comments. Just wanted to say I am very impressed with the content . I wanted to comment on the subtle difference between your Brandon misfire video and this one to help validate my understanding and possibly help others. The Brandon video shows a weak intake pull due to a cylinder that has a leaking intake valve and this misfire video shows a weak intake pull due to a crank speed variation and the cylinder with the compression issue actually has a leaking exhaust valve. Hopefully I got that correct. Comparing wave forms they both look very similar but a closer examination shows some subtle differences which you did a great job of pointing out. This was an eye opener to me and illustrates the importance to continue to learn and explore. Thanks for your enthusiasm and knowledge transfer I look forward to reviewing all your current videos and eager to see your new ones.

I don't know if I could make the call on a valve sealing issue without pulling the valve cover and doing a visual inspection. The scope can tell you if you have a top end sealing issue, but it can't tell you why. I would not want quote a head when it's a valve spring or a rocker arm broke off and jammed the valve open.
@SuperMarioDiagnostics
@SuperMarioDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
A scope can't tell you why? Of course it can! If I would've continued on with the scope based diagnosis, we would've seen an issue in an exhaust pulse, or with an in cylinder capture. But instead I went with a leakdown. I wouldn't just blindly pull the head 😆 I'd go in step by step as I did with the suburban misfire. A rocker arm falling off would result in a good leakdown, and a lack of valve opening, instead of valve leakage. Now a valve spring issue yes would cause sealing issues, but the client declined going any further. The relative compression test proves that there is a cylinder compression issue. The intake pulse isolated from the crankcase rules out cylinder wash/ring sealing issues. Of course doing a real time video, i did jump the gun saying "heads coming off." But if you've seen any of my videos, you'll see that I'm not the type to go a step further without justifying it. Thanks for the feedback! Thanks for watching!

if the exhaust is leaky when the piston goes down it will suck back in and the intake suction will be weaker. so an exhaust capture may help may not. i'm thinking in cylinder pressure test comparing the suspect with another may be best. you guys keep teaching me its scary!!!

Question, will the clear flood test be the same on a 2005 Toyota 4runner 4.0? Mine has a hesitation/shudder between 25-40mph at super light throttle and crap gas mileage. No issues if skinny peddle is pressed in a fast manner, only when pressing lightly on it.. I did a clear flood test and it fired up.
@SuperMarioDiagnostics

They clear flood does not apply to every car. Some will have a bidirectional control to inhibit starting. Some you may need to pull the injector fuse, others you may have to manually power the starter with the key off

Mario, I think you cemented my suspicions on my son 08 4.0 mustang motor swap! A misfire that keeps on after plugs, wires & coils. I took a piece of paper when at idle at tail pipes and saw passengers side tail pipe it suck paper inwards for a sec but worse when at slight load. Thought it was acting like a sticking valve? An in cylinder would've been pretty cool, might've shown something when the evc occurs, and maybe a weak pull as well. Great video Mario. From my experience this is what I have seen. I would have engine running with FLS in intake looking at intake pulses. If I see uneven pulses we have compression problem. My next step is to use mechanical vacuum gauge. If my needle is fluctuate we have leaking intake valves if not than we have leaking exhaust valves.👍

Thanks for the advice! I do tend to stay away from running pulses, since rpm have a lot of effect on the reading, and can be noisy. Maybe i should start trying it running, as i need to get used to it. Thanks for watching Ramon!

Awesome diag brother! I was waiting for you to go to in-cylinder, but leakdown proves your waveforms. Are you pulling the head?

Thanks Joe! Don't think she'll go for it honestly. As of yet it's declined, but you never know!

Got a 2006 mustang with a 4.0l v6 ,timing guides failed and I replaced all the timing components including timing bolts , new intake seals , oil pan gaskets , new water pump and oil pump , car fired up great sounded good got the air out of the motor it ran cool , never once over heated while I’ve owned it , doesn’t have a check engine like and i re timed the motor with the special kit all new timing chains , I’ve got a pinging kind of noise at idle I don’t hear it while accelerating doesn’t seem to spit and sputter , oil pressure is good the motor shakes tiny bit . I can not figure out what’s wrong I’m being told it’s out of time on one side of the motor , if that’s possible how can I check ?

The noise sounds like it’s coming from passenger side valve cover I even pulled it and watched it run , I couldn’t find anything wrong , got good octane gasoline in it
