I’ve been in this trade for 40 years replacing maybe a thousand clutches in that time . Doing some on my back but mostly used a ramp . Totally respect to you doing them on cold damp wet surfaces laying down and kneeling that’s hard work really takes it toll on your body over time. You certainly have my respect Kevin.

Staggering! 40+ years in the trade here and I can't imagine a more difficult way to earn a living. Just the thought of climbing under the car with a 13mm spanner only to find it's 12mm - so you have to climb back out and back in again - would drive me insane! You will never be short of work that's for sure, I guess your overheads are low in comparison to a workshop, but boy you have picked a challenging job. I take my hat off to you.

Great job you are doing there! I've been watching your videos for a while now. Apart from the fact that huge respect for doing this in the rain, freezing outside or getting blown away by wind I never understood how can you just lift a transmission to it's place like it would be like 2 kilos. I've had some jobs like this, but putting back the transmission has been a nightmare every time! I'm happy I saw that it was exhausting for you today also, because I was starting to feel anxious since it looked so easy :)

Great job my friend! I have done a lot of things to my X-type, but never did such complicated ones. This video is twice as respectable, because the clutch was replaced in a winter cold weather and everything was taken on the camera. Special respect to your cameraman! Ages ago, when I was younger and more ambitious, I also changed a clutch on a FWD car in winter frost, but that car was far less sophisticated than a Jaguar. I was keeping the fire burning during two or three days, while I was removing and installing the clutch. You reminded me of my best times! Pardon my comment, I don't want to somehow offend you, but the only thing I would do in a different manner in your video, I wouldn't press on the suspension arm so bravely so that to prevent the arm bush from leakage (it contains fluid). I would first lower the subframe, since you had to lower it anyway. But you managed to avoid this trouble, that's why it doesn't matter much in your case.

@@WMCS it really helped. I've done loads of clutch's over the years but not on the X type so always good to learn something new. Just thought while I was under there I'd sort out the oil leaks just got a small one left to sort which is the timing chain cover. I did get that horrible problem though that the captive nuts spun round but overcame that problem. Hey ho we live and learn. Anyway I'm waffling on again many thanks really appreciate it 😊

@@WMCS I didn't want to cut into the car so I looked online. I found on a Jaguar forum a guy who had got a long 21mm ring spanner and bent it into shape. The idea is you slot the spanner up through the hole that's behind the 2 13mm on the support bracket to the subframe and guide it onto the captive nut if that makes sense. So I fashioned one myself with great effort lol 😂 got there in the end, not as good as the guys from the forum site but it worked. With a bit off fiddling around manage to get it on the captive nut and bobs your uncle. I intend to keep the Jag for a while and I want to keep the maintenance up it. I'll try and find the post on the forum site and post it on here

Noticed you cutting the centre out of the Insignia dmf the other day. I had the Vectra 150 F40 equivalent. Bought it as a cheap conked box with 20k plus miles and a rattling dmf. Previous owner drove it for 30k with the dmf clanking like a mixer and it did not grenade. When I changed it I could see why. No idea where the dmf springs had disappeared to, but what was left was metal sliding against metal ( hadn’t seized like that Insignia.) From memory I dropped one side of the subframe. Can’t recall if you left the box on the rail. Will go back for a look.

Another fantastic video Kevin, I look forward to your videos every Saturday and Sunday. I have noticed you are using a ratchet spanner now, I have the same one, and they are great and a lot faster. When you are bleeding the clutch you now open the bleed valve and then pump the clutch pedal, is this way better than pumping the pedal then opening the bleed valve, like you used to do.
@WMCS
@WMCS 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely better. I attended an online course. The new csc will fail prematurely if you bleed the old fashioned way. The new technique is to prime it now. Even with the bleed valve open it doesn’t suck in air.

Very impressive mechanic. I had that same job done on my own car by specialist clutch garage. Afterwards the clutch worked great but there was a very noticeable vibration in the engine at idle that wasn't previously there. The garage said they hadn't done anything to the engine. When doing this job, do you have to remove or disturb anything that would affect engine running if not put back right? Many thanks

Just finished doing this exact job on my jaguar x type although I had issues with subframe captive nut. Your guide gave me the confidence to do it 👌 all back together now and driving I do however have a DSC system fault if you have any idea's it would be appreciated.. anyway cheers 🍻

The steering moved whilst steering was was de coupled. Put wheel dead straight. De couple steering rack from underneath the clutch pedal. Full lock left. Then count how many turnings until you hit full right. Then half that and fit steering rack at exactly halfway mark.

Thanks again for your help.. that worked perfectly 👌 I'd have never thought of that and would have started replacing stuff thinking I'd damaged whilst taking it apart, so cheers Very much appreciated 👏
