If your silver shift button does not fully depress into the knob, you most likely have a broken piece of plastic stuck between the knob and the button assembly. Remove the knob assembly and try shifting without it by depressing on the shift rod mechanism. This broken piece can also keep you from getting into park because the shift rod isn't getting depressed fully.

Yep exactly as described all the way down to the little broken piece of plastic inside. I had ordered the replacement assembly from Nissan parts for around $140 (and will install it when it arrives in a few days) but this gets me out of the woods for the time being. Actually, in my case, the shift lever was still operational, but the plastic silver button on the side wasn't going in all the way which made the shifting process (from park) a little glitchy and weird. I wasn't about to ignore the problem. The Nissan part number for the this whole shebang is 34910-ZT50B which is basically everything that slides off the internal shifter rod. It wasn't clear to me that you could order any of the individual internal parts so I just bought the whole enchilada. I'll keep it in storage until such time I have another problem. Anyway thanks Rick for this video. I'm sure it saved me hundreds in repair charges. BTW: I have a 2012 Sentra which is a Special Edition model. This thing crapped out at about 50K miles. The only other cabin repair I've had to make so far is the drivers side power window switch assembly (that group of little plastic switches on the door arm rest).

Tip to save lives immediately!: You can bypass it if you hold the button and pull the shifter towards the right and pull down. Works for my 2012 Nissan Sentra!
