Thanks for the video! I almost gave up until I saw this. Took a while to move it around just right to pull it out. I kept an eye on the position it was in when I pulled it out and reversed when putting the new one in. I didn’t want to mess with pulling out the motor mount or radiator fan that I saw in other videos. Great advice about keeping a bolt in to hold the metal gasket in place.

Great video. I watched this before changing the starter in our town and country so I knew what I was getting into. My old starter was cranking slow and would not start the van when the engine was hot, it would bearly turn when the engine was hot. I would have to wait for it to cool down and then it would start. Info is dead on. I didn't remove the heat shield because I wanted to save time and also I was worried the bolts may break. I was able to get it out pretty easily with the heat shield I'm place. Took me 45 mins with the van on ramps and basic tools. You should use silicone to "glue" the metal spacer/shim onto the starter so it doesn't move around when you're trying to get the bolts in. New starter cranks super quick and works great.

Changed the starter in my 2010 4L Town & Country. I only removed the O2 sensor. Plenty of room to take it down. Only 2 bolts. 1 bottom and 1 top. Got the top bolt from the top and the bottom bolt from the bottom. No problem with socket wrench clearance on either bolt. Biggest problem was the small wire connector. Red tab would not move. Finally got it to back off. Used the same tools he listed plus a common screwdriver for the red tab. Took about 1.5 hours for the whole job.

I'm certainly glad that I came upon your video. By far the most helpful for my job. I wasn't able to remove the heatshield due to a stripped upper nut on that shield. This made it harder to get out, however a long flat screwdriver worked to help pry the shield down while pulling the starter out. Putting the new one in was similar, used a rubber mallet to tap it past the heatshield. Then of course the work required to align the new starter. One thing I did do was applied a bit of vaseline to the rim of the starter unit where the metal gasket aligns. This provided a bit of lube to fit into the hole and helped align with the metal gasket. If doing this without a helper. it might be useful to use a long wire/coat-hanger to help pull the line up and out of the way (without cracking the line). Good luck everyone doing this on a 4l engine. Thank you again for providing the tips on this.

Thank you for making the video! I have a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 4.0 and everything you showed worked perfectly to get the starter in and out, definitely a tight fit. Not many videos out on the 4.0L. My starter was still working but cranked very slowly even with a new battery and cleaning all the connections. The new start solved the problem.

Just did one, no need to pull the O2 sensor or heat shield. It’s possible to rotate the starter 180 degrees and pull it out the top. Took just over an hour. The trick is to remove both electrical connections that are bolted onto the starter before removing it and before installing the new one. 🤟🏻

Hey dude, you are a legend, this video helped me out a TON. One of the only ones with the 4.0 V6 I found. Fantastic focus on the camerawork. Took me 9 hours, but a lot of that was messing with the Autozone instructions-- Setting up an engine support bar that I got at Harbor Freight, and jacking up on the oil pan with a scrap piece of wood to take pressure off the engine mounts (saw it in a few other vids). Probably didn't need any of that since I followed what you did. The line at 4:30 (I think it's the oil line? I didn't check too hard) absolutely needs to be loosened-- 1) to get to the O2 sensor 2. To get to the top bolt holding the starter in. And probably a bunch of other times I don't remember at this point. There's a 10mm there behind the radiator fan holding down that lineand a 15mm holding down an electrical bundle to the left of the battery. I had to unplug the (vacuum?) connection that was blocking the 15mm, had to use a crescent wrench half the time because it was a tight fit for a ratchet. Getting it out was a process. Took me 20mins after it was loose, but I got it. Getting the other one back in, look at the replacement-- There is a "cone" shaped end that has a gear in it that engages with the starter flywheel in the engine. Put this end into that recess just below the engine flywheel and it'll (barely) give you the room you need to rotate the starter in there. I got it jammed a few times, and I had a second pair of hands help thread the bolts in there after a lot of small adjustments. The holes in the engine block aren't threaded, so balancing that metal shim before you shove the starter back in is pretty difficult because the bolts can just be pushed out. I got the starter in and didn't dare take it out, so I managed to cram some fingers under it and manipulate the shim to get it back on the top bolt, which we got threaded in and the second bolt went in like a breeze (The middle bolt was missing lmao) Great video, thanks again!!

This helped me change the starter, thanks BUT, The car started fine for about a week and now it randomly does the one click thing again. The exact same problem it was doing before. now it's a new starter, and it's unlikely that a brand new starter would have worked for a week and then started doing the exact same problem. any idea what this might be or what a solution might be? It will start sometimes, and sometimes it takes about 30 minutes to get it to start. Battery is basically new (4 months old) and it's not a rapid clicking indicative of battery issues anyway. This is driving me insane and I can't trust this vehicle with my wife and babies in it like this. HELP!?! 😅

Ok so I'm with ya all the way up until the O2 sensor comes in. I can't seem to get it to break loose. I am completely ignorant to all things mechanic but have to get this figured out so I have a vehicle again. Been stranded for just. Over a month at this point. Any suggestions on what I could try to get the o2 sensor off?

You might have to use a small pipe wrench for the O2 sensor do you have a little torch you can heat it up with?
@simplycountry
@simplycountry 7 ай бұрын
@@509trails ihavea propane torch ( pretty sure it's propane it's a green bottle) and I did see that as an option that other people have talked about but I was scared to do it because there's oil all over the place under my van and was worried that it might be dangerous. I'm kind of like Murphy's law . I have one of those sockets that you can use for the o2sensor so it will accommodate the wires on it but there's no room to get the ratchet in there. Do you think it would be wise just to cut the cords on the O2 sensor so I could use the clothes end on a regular wrench to try to grip it better? I wasn't really sure if it would be worth the loss of the O2 sensor by cutting the wires to try that or not. I don't have a breaker bar so I'm not sure if I'd be able to put enough leverage on the wrench anyway. I'm starting to feel kinda hopeless but I don't have the money to replace the van over a starter so I got to get it figured out and I just got to there's no other option.
@509trails

What did your starter do when it was going out? I have one that is I think getting stuck in the out position. Once you turn the key and then it kind of puts everything in a bind, you can let it sit for a little while and it feels like this, it pulls back and you can start it up and it’s fine, someone told me it was the starter so I am going to change it out. This video is a big help but if you could hit me back and let me know what your starter did when it was going out.

@@509trails The repair went well and your instructions were perfect. Thanks for posting the video! Fun fact: I bought my Town and Country 4.0 new in 2008 and the starter has been increasingly giving me trouble for the last few years, and it only have 80k miles. When I peeked at the underside of the van, I found one of the three starter mounting bolts was missing, never installed. There wasn't even a witness mark on the casting. Can you BELIEVE they forgot one of the bolts at the factory? W I N D S O R! HOw cOuLD YoU?! Troubleshooting facts, in case anyone else is suspecting their starter as the problem because this problem is different than any other I found on KZfaq and this is the only 4.0 starter video. When the car is cold starting is sluggish. When the car is hot, the starter begins to turn over the motor but stalls like the battery is low. I replaced the battery twice since 2008, last time about six months ago. Voltage is fine, charging circuit no problems. Recently, after shopping, I drove home and shut off the motor. I immediately tried and it would not start, stalling again. I tried five more times and each time it turned a little bit less each time. But then I smelled electrical smoke. I left it for a few hours and it started fine. My wife continued to use the car for another month. But I told her that she could not shut off the engine unless she was home. That wouldn't do, so I made the repair today. When I removed the starter, I smelled a little of that delicious electrical smokey flavor. I got a new starter. I used emery cloth and steel wool on the electrical ring terminal to clean it up, coated it and the washers and nut with silicone grease. The van starts fast. Took the van for a long country drive and it started right up after a short lunch. Apparently the windings in the motor were shorted a little, enough to not work right all the time.
