In this video, I show how to replace the waterpump on this 2015 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi V8 Engine. It is probably the same process for a 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi. This water pump was leaking from the front of the housing behind the pulley. The bearing on the front of the water pump was trashed as well and had a lot of extra play in it. This caused the waterpump pulley to wobble all around. The truck smelled like antifreeze for the last month or two, so the pump has likely been weeping for quite some time.
Replacing the water pump itself is not very hard, but does take a few hours. The hardest part is removing the fan clutch from the water pump. Once you remove the fan and fan clutch, the rest is a piece of cake.
A few warnings you should know:
- The fan clutch has reverse threads where it connects to the pump!
- Removing the fan clutch from the water pump is a hassle. If you don’t have a air hammer / air chisel, it’s hard to do. Tapping the wrench while you turn it works a lot of the time if an air chisel is not available. If those don’t work, I have no other advice. It’s just hard and takes a lot of fiddling.
- I don’t know the proper torque for the water pump bolts, but I went with 18 foot pounds. It seemed good to me.
- The video is for your entertainment only. I’m just some idiot on the internet working on crappy cars and trucks. So if you are following any of my video for actual knowledge - do so at your own risk.

Thank you big time for this video! I like that you showed a couple things right up front as to what NOT to do! And the air chisel trick was a life saver. I already had the chisel, but never would have thought about that. Since my truck is 10yrs old and all original I went ahead and replaced idler pulley, belt tensioner, thermostat housing, thermostat, fan clutch and belt all together!

Mine is over 10 years old now (2013). I'm planning to replace the belt and thermostat when I do the water pump. I'm on the fence about the tensioner. Do you have a part number for what you used? I'm seeing them range drastically in price, from $35 to over $100.

Leaving for fishing trip to Northern Wi tomorrow and had to replace today, luckily Advance screw you auto parts had everything in stock. Pump , idler, tensioner, hoses, belt and stat. And had a v6 fan setup so did it all today. Forgot that Ram decided to not put belt diagram sticker on shroud, But browzing through found clips that straightened me out thank.

Any decent repair shop should be able to do a water pump on a Ram for you. It's very much the same as any other V8 engine going back ~75 years. The only tricky parts are not breaking the fan shroud on the bottom (whoops!) and keeping the bolts organized! Thanks for watching!

I cant believe how lucky some if you guys are to get that fan clutch off so easy. It took me and my brother with a rented pulley holder tool and me standing on a 3 foot adjustable wrench to get mine off my 2013 ram. On a old s10 i had i had to cut it off with a sawzall. Use a 1000ft/lb rated impact on it. Had to buy a new clutch.

Would you recommend a gates water pump over a mopar water pump? Both of my 2014 hemis are now on their third oem water pump.. 😆

I know the gates one fits well, and seems to work fine. So if your first 3 were oem, gates might be a nice alternative!

I watched your video over and over again and thought I was ready to do the job. I bought a water pump and radiator because I want to overhaul the system, however, I am having a lot of trouble just getting started. I cannot remove the fan. The nut is frozen on. I tried the big wrench and hammer first, and when that didn't work, I tried the air chisel like you did in the video. Then I bought a pneumatic fan clutch wrench ($$), but no luck with that either. It is just not coming loose. I'm anxious to get on with job. Do you have any suggestions? My compressor produces 5 CFM @ 90 psi. Do you know if that's enough power? Thanks

Make sure that you are turning it the correct way. I have read that some of these are threaded the opposite way depending on when the truck was built. I don’t know if that’s true. So it’s worth trying to spin it the opposite way to see what happens?

On average how long does it take to replace the water pump?? I need to have mine replaced (thankfully still under warranty) but I'd hate to be with out my truck for a day or two
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
It took me maybe ~3 hours to do, but I was also making a video which takes longer. So I would not think a shop would need the truck for more than a day. I bet a somebody that has done this a bunch of times (a dodge dealership technician) could do this in 1.5 hours. That being said, flat rate time is what you would pay, so you may pay for 3-4 hours. I’m just guessing at that though. Good luck with it! I’m cheering for you!

The truck in the video still works fine. Engine temperature is normal and the heat works great! I’d recommend checking your antifreeze level, it may be low.

Just a tip, if’ Ya don’t have the air hammer tool thingy, it’s really simple to remove that lower piece of the fan shroud and then remove the rest of the fan shroud and the electric fan at the same time, and then you can remove the water pump with the fan still attached. I stuck the lower hose piece from the water pump over a jack handle and then put Vice Grips in the pulley and then was able to break that fan nut loose. Also nice to have the extra room when ya install the new pump, and then with the engine fan still out of the way, re-install the electric fan and the shroud and install the engine fan from the bottom.

@712, the little hose thats on the new pump, it sorta juts off to the left. Its black and doesnt look quite like a hose, can you replace just that and whats called?
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! I honestly don’t know the answer. I would think worst case scenario, you could rip the original one out and thread the hold with a tap, add a hose barb fitting and just stick a rubber hose on it? That being said - a new pump is not that expensive. So it may not be the worst idea to just replace the whole thing if yours already has a lot of miles on it.

Hey man should the pulley that the fan is bolted on be able to spin by hand which the vehicle off ? Put a new belt on after old one snapped , snapped the new one instantly on start up only pulleys that don't spin by hand is the one I mentioned and the one beneath it to the left . 2011 ram 1500 5.7 4x4 . Any knowledge is appreciated bud .

If you are talking about the waterpump pulley, it should spin if there is not a belt touching it.

Dude, Awesome video, the way you explain things is great.... My only critique would be, you don't show the work being done. I would like to see the work actually being done, now I understand you're one guy you only have two hands, so I get it. Needless to say, I would like to see the actual wrenching of the volts coming out and the hoses coming out and etc etc. I'm sure you understand. Other than that, fantastic job, you sir have a new subscriber and I promise to smash that like button 🤘👍👍🤘 Take care buddy. ~Jonny5🥁
