2009-2010 Toyota Corolla tenth generation will not shift into park and will not release the key, you have to use the emergency hand brake to keep the car from rolling. Easy fix, remove the cover to the shift release button by the shifter, and press with a flathead screwdriver. Move it through all the gears and see if it helps in your situation.

Kid's 2010 Matrix was not going into park. Was able to start in neutral etc. Over riding the shift interlock as shown in this video fixed it. Thank-you.

Happened to me the other day, my car was stuck in the garage. The car would not budge out of park. Incidentally, the Australian model of the exact Toyota has a shift lock button not a cover like yours. I had to call out roadside assist, and he did what you did, took the gear shift cover off, checked all leads. He made sure it wasn't a brake or transmission issue. He just said that it got stuck like you explained. Interestingly the Toyota mechanics at the dealership where I regularly take it to get fixed had no clue or definitive answer. They just lubricated the cogs which the gear shift moves around. The car has done close to 225000 kms. I think it could be on its last legs.

Just had to do this today on a 2010 Corolla. Shifter would not return to P and unable to take the key out. Worked like a charm after pressing the shift-lock bypass button.

This particular problem is mechanical, if you remove the shift cable from the range lever on the transmission you cannot manually put the transmission into park... regardless of button being pressed and regardless of shift cable adjustment or bushings.... yes the shift interlock is a common problem on all cars but this particular problem has nothing to do with that and this video is extremely misleading

Thank you. I'm a former mechanic with a 2010 Corolla that this just happened to last night. Figured I'd look into it today but wasn't sure if I should be starting with the shift linkage or the transmission itself. This video was the first that popped up and I was amazed it was since it's so wrong. That's the shift interlock (electromagnetic actuator) bypass. The interlock is what stops you from being able to shift out of park when not hitting the brake. If the interlock fails then it's necessary to use the bypass to be able to shift the car out of park. This video clearly doesn't address the actual issue at hand.

@@XxJayDkxX Could just be the shift linkage but it could also be the parking pawl. You'll have to do some testing/diagnosis on your car. If it's the parking pawl then the transmission is gonna have to come out and be taken apart since that piece is internal. (Locks the output shaft from rotating when you are in park. Can get bent and stop you from being able to shift into park)

I was able to "fix" it by disconnecting the shift cable from the transmission and moving the linkage up and down until park engaged. I could tell the shift cable was applying a good amount of pressure to the shift linkage but the transmission physically wouldn't go into park. It seems like the transmission has a one off issue internally that makes engaging park abnormally difficult. Either that or the shift cable needs to be readjusted. But given the amount of pressure I applied to the linkage without getting park to engage and since there is no other evidence to suggest a faulty shift cable, I am gonna assume the former is the issue. I dont know how the park mechanism works but it seems like something was stuck in a bind that was eventually released by cycling through the gears. Removing the shift cable might not be necessary to resolve the issue if it occurs again in the future.

yes, i think what happened is that the shift lock came on while in the drive position, and had to be pressed in order to release for the shifter to be allowed back into park

Hey man it worked thanks... but when I put it in park car will reserve and on the dash nothing would shoe up like p for park it feels like it's stuck on the middle of them 2. Any help?

could be the plastic bushing on the cable that goes to the transmission, or could be the cable itself, check if it’s not damaged

@@rodolforios1057 all other gears shift perfectly, I have not tried to change the fuse yet. My back rear lights work and so does cruse control.

@@bigafghan_kabob2106 try pressing the button under that little square piece that pops out, use a small screwdriver to remove the square and press the button under it.
