This is really awesome! You've totally inspired me to follow a similar build for my honda fit when I was considering a way more complicated version before. Happy camping!

Eve Sanford that's awesome! Depending on your year you might need to make a few adjustments! Good luck! It's so comfortable

I'd love to see the under-platform storage. From videos of other car-sleepers it seems that leaving all your stuff exposed during the day is likely to be a real theft hazard. Of course that's a problem faced by motel-sleepers too - at night your stuff might be inside the motel, but while touring, hiking, exploring it doesn't take a rocket-scientist of a thief to figure out you have an out of state license plate (or even an out of area car dealer plate) and are probably hauling your stuff around with you, under the hatch cover or in the trunk.

I'm a Honda guy. Not a motorhead but I have loved my Hondas. 91 CIVC EX 5sp, several (like 5) Honda Elements 3 were mine I bought for my kid's first car, and I'm on my second Honda FIT. Once I carried two doors and a hood for an old Datsun 521 pickup in the back of my FIT. So I love and respect the FIT. That said, if you want a small hatchback so you can do some "stealth" camping (whatever that means) there are better choices. I'd look at the Element, CRV, or the HRV. All of those you can lay flat in without needing all the plywood. Also an older Honda Pilot, the boxy one from 2009-2011? When you lay the back seats flat there is a ton of room in the back. It's deeper, but not wider, than a similar year Tahoe SUV. Nice video, be safe out there.

Thanks for the info! I built the platform so that I could still have storage. I agree that there are better options out there if you just want to lie flat. That wouldn't allow for so the camping gear I use.

Thats a great build! Nice and clean and your workmanship looks spot on. I have a Honda Fit and have been thinking about doing this same thing. 2 nights trying to sleep with no platform won't happen again. Good luck to you and have fun on your journeys.

It looks like the hinges on the platform have some backing plates or something covering the ends of the screws
@mrtwinkie06 жыл бұрын
The screws for the hinges were a bit longer than base board, so I had to cut them. I just put some duct tape on the back. The second build I did for a friend we just purchased shorter screws

Great job! But I'd love to see the mattress in and you on top of the mattress, doesn't look like there would be enough room?
@mrtwinkie06 жыл бұрын
Hi Marc! I'll make sure to take a video next time I put the mattress on!
@mrtwinkie06 жыл бұрын
You definitely cannot put a traditional mattress. If you're okay with a harder surface, a thick (3" or 4") mattress topper will do the trick. Otherwise, I've been using this mattress (www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20102074/)

Your design is the best I’ve seen! I am building mine this weekend. Do you happen to have or remember the dimensions? Any tips you have would be appreciated!
@mrtwinkie05 жыл бұрын
Hey! I wouldn't go higher than about 12-15 inches. Find the bins that you plan to use underneath and make sure to make the platform an inch or two higher.
@sairahwalsh90742 жыл бұрын
Great project! Are all pieces on hinges or just that one piece? Do you store it in the house or keep it in the car? Also do you have any footage of storage after? Great conversion!
@stevehapp2 жыл бұрын
genius. less is more... great design thinking..
@mrtwinkie02 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! I made a list of what I wanted to be able to do (full size mattress, ability to store a cooler underneath, easy to break down and store) and built to those specs. It was fun to figure it out!

Do you drive with the whole thing set up? I'm trying to make my own that stays put in my car while on a road trip but am concerned about the safety of it. I suppose bins and everything stored underneath would add some stability?
@mrtwinkie06 жыл бұрын
Yes, since everything is stored underneath the platform it keeps it pretty stable and safe while driving
@edgit696 жыл бұрын
Is the base 12 inches high and if so how long does it make the platform.. Thanks
@mrtwinkie06 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, the base is about 15" high. It's basically high enough so that I can fit coolers and bins underneath. If you use lower bins, you can make it lower and have more room up top!

Did you ever sleep in your parked car with engine ideal running condition with AC or hot air on for whole night ?
@mrtwinkie03 жыл бұрын
No, I have never had the engine on all night. During warmer nights, I take the insulation off and just use the window socks that I have and keep the windows rolled down. I've slept in cold temperatures down to the single digits as well. In that case I will run the car for about 30 min prior to going to sleep and make sure everything is warm and toasty. I might wake up 5 or 6 hours later to turn back on the engine and heat up, but a good down comforter or a 0 degree sleeping bag should keep you warm through the night.

Until the rear accident, then all this heavy and poorly fixed wooden stuff will become instantly deadly, smashing the front seats and passengers from the back with the speed of whoever rears the car, and the permanent spinal cord injuries would be the best outcome. Life is precious. Why gamble with it?
@DanielFassa3 жыл бұрын
omg, you are missing the point in such a miraculous way.
@redfox05nl2 жыл бұрын
@O. I. I have the same concerns. I'm currently building a platform for the same car and I was considering keeping the platform in whilst driving, but after your comment I think I'm going to rethink the design to allow it to all pack into the rear of the car and put the seats up, this containing the wood in the trunk/boot of the car in case of an accident. I'm sure it won't be too hard to do and will hopefully be much safer. @Daniel I think the comment is very relevant, so feel free to point out what the 'missed point' is. Afaik the video suggests a custom build and @O.I. is highlighting a danger. The concerns in the comment are valid and will definitely make me and others watching this think about the dangers of driving with it built out, and hopefully find ways to make it safer.
