For all those who knock at how the US marches in parades ... we don't march like they do in Russia or China or North Korea because they are nothing more then nationalistic, fascist demonstrations of state power (especially when they display squadrons of tanks and ICBMs). Second, the US military practices what is known as quiet professionalism. No need to thump your chest because only insecure and weak nations do that. And finally, America puts its money in combat readiness, no choreographed marches every year. Anyone can goose-step, but can anyone fight effectively like Americans?

I don't think they need to - one of the few things I respect about the US army is that they don't need annual huge military parades to prove the strength of their armed forces (as Russia and China do) - the strength of their military forces goes without question.

The US does not need to show off its military as other nations. We are that comfortable of our superiority. We celebrate our nation, we do not use it as an excuse to show our low self esteem and use it as a tool of propagande. A smiling President and great marching band, just the best in life...

The president doesn't have an official uniform. In the military, you're not supposed to salute when out of uniform, but the president usually salutes at parades like these and when saluted by military personnel.

The order is: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard. Further broken down to Cadets/Midshipmen, Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, Training Units The parade probably followed a different order, seeing as the Army delegation was a single unit, followed by the Punahou School's marching band.

I'm not saying they should all goosestep but.. we're a nation with a proud history & a number of triumphs & breakthroughs to our credit. This nation owes its very existence to the toughness, skill & discipline of it's soldiers., even. The march that they do should at least reflect that history & the fundamentals that made it so. That's one thing many people don't bother realizing about marches elsewhere: They're not displaying a power so much as exhibiting their part of their nation's story.

@spudnick3490 I agree that the Soviets were the decisive factor in the defeat of Germany, but you cannot overlook the contribution of America. And I'm not only talking about its military campaigns during the war. America's industrial capacity provided support to countless nations (even a little bit to the Soviets under Lend-Lease). Could the US, USSR, or any country have won this war on its own? The simple answer is "no".

@spudnick3490 You correctly identify that the defeat of Japan was a joint effort, however, the capture of those "unguarded" islands was an important US contribution, as they denied the acquisition of resources which Japan needed to continue its military effort. And the taking of such Islands required tremendous naval power, and naval power is born of industrial power-- which was the strongest trait of America in WWII.

@KIMxJUNGxIL not only that because the americans mostly train the military to fight. Russia and china mostly train thair military to do parades. They use 75% of their training for parades. We r at our forts and military bases conducting drills excersizing 24/7 training to jump out of helichopters and repelling off the mountain moving in like ghosts. While they train for parades and ceremonies.

I agree we could use some work on the parade marching, however the best Parade Marching Armies are the British followed by the Germans. If you have watched the British performing their spin wheel menuever (done on Queens B-Day) you'll understand why, and it was Frederick the Great that invented modern military Drill.

During Inaugural Parades Pershing's Own plays marches more slowly than is normal to set a slower tempo for High School students following them. Sorry Duke, but the march pays tribute to its soldiers and the band is mindful of thye well-being of students. That's how most Americans think, but not you.

Would be cool to see, but to my knowledge, the US has never held a big parade with major military hardware. Maybe the local NG unit drives a vintage 2.5 ton truck or a jeep in parades, but that is about the most you'll see. Those big parades remind Americans too much of the Cold War and the USSR; they would be protested not cheered.

But why do we always have to march so lazily though? They're all smiles, hunched over, not really in unison. One guy isn't even holding his rifle up straight. I KNOW they teach that much. The military teaches discipline, precision & a host of other skills to be mastered even by the most basic troops. So it stands to reason that they should want to display all that discipline & training in the way they present themselves at home, the same way they're expected to when they're on the job.

I must agree with you here. I like to watch those "Big brainwashed machine" parades. hehe. The precision and skill that go into some of them is amazing. But, machines are exactly what they are, unlike our military. All of our soldiers are trained to be leaders, so if the chain of command is destroyed the battle will not come to an end. A lot of those military's you take out their leaders and the rest will run around like chickens with their heads cut off.

@AwsomeAndrew2 When we speak of that many casualties in a single engagement, my question is not about the discipline of the individual fighting man, but of the quality of leadership. I do not doubt that most Red Army soldiers were fighting hard with a genuine concern for their family and homeland. The real issue is men like Zhukov. They disturb me to no end, knowing how many individuals they are willing to sacrifice to meet a particular objective.

@ALBANO2684 no, marines are NOT better at fighting. where do you folks get this silliness from? until ww1, they were guards at embassies and on ships. in ww1, they pretty much fought in one battle. the army did the bulk of the fighting. in ww2, they were in the pacific, but more soldiers fought there, and killed more japanese. no marines of note in europe. this myth that marines are supermen is cute, but doesn't reflect reality. BOTH are great fighting forces, and 'competition' is dumb.

i dont think so, the cold war has been over for 20 years and i think such animosity stems from the fact that it is never american hardware thats being shown in these massive foreign parades. i believe a column of abrams, bradleys and MRAPS would generate immense public enthusiasm and interest in the military. it will also enforce the notion of discipline and unity as opposed to the public's perception that the army is all about blowing things up and shooting foreigners
