2009 Suzuki GSX-R1000 . How fast could you go? Do the power-to-weight math: 155 at the rear wheel at 452 pounds...
Competition is fierce in the crowded realm of the literbike. So despite an incredible record of consecutive AMA Superbike wins, Suzuki decided to go back to the drawing board for a completely new soup-to-nuts redesign of the GSX-R1000 for 2009. Suzuki Motorcycle's Garrett Kai jokes that the only elements carried over from last year's model are the fuel tank cap and the oil filter. The differences may seem subtle to the untrained eye, but to a superbike aficionado, Suzuki has gone the distance to improve upon previous near perfection.
The overall appearance of the Gixxer Thou is more aggressive and more refined, and more compact than its forebear. Weight has been cut back six pounds to a total net of 452 pounds. The redesigned 999cc inline four-cylinder engine is over two inches shorter, which in turn shortens the wheelbase for greater maneuverability, and allows for a longer swingarm, yielding improved corner traction. Technology from racing's cutting edge has informed most aspects of the bike's new design, including a new cable-actuated clutch system, and big piston forks. Indeed, with 155 hp at the rear wheel, you might want to have some racing experience before attempting to tap this bike's potential. That's right, for a mere $12,899, you too can enjoy grand prix performance in a two-wheeled street machine.
An avid Suzuki collector, Jay already has a 1975 RE5 and a 1966 X6 Hustler among others in his collection, and was beyond thrilled when Suzuki presented him with the first production GSX-R1000 as a thank you for his support of the motorcycle industry. Jay will have to break his Gixxer in easy for the first 500 miles, keeping it below 4000 rpm - where most cars redline!

I remember when the GSXR first came out in 1984-1985 . I thought the dual round headlights on the flat-faced fairing were the coolest look. I still do actually.

I think that was an idea for racing bikes like TT racing, so they set one light higher so they’d still see the road when braking hard. Could be wrong.

Thank you, Jay, for a video of a bike that a lot of people could afford. When I was 22, I had a 1981 Kawasaki 1100 GPZ. I lived in the mountains and I remember the thrill of taking 10 mph curves at 70. I'd been riding since age 10, but, of course, I still did a lot of really stupid things on motorcycles in those days and somehow never got a scratch. When I was 39 years old, I was putting along on a Sportster at about 45 mph, hit a raccoon while going around a curve. That was in 1998 and I've since been an incomplete quad. People think I'm crazy, (they could be right), but if I could, I would still be riding. That feeling of freedom just can't be beat. Ride as much as you can for as long as you can, Jay, and please keep showing motorcycle videos.

Few will ever be able to own a Ferrari, but if you want to know what it feels like to own and drive one you can. Any late model 600-1300 cc bike can provide every bit of exhilaration of driving a Ferrari, at a price that any working reasonably competent person can afford if they choose to. This is why I love riding and the motorcycle industry as a whole. I am not suggesting a new rider should go buy a big bike and drive it like an idiot. Unless you hate your life and want to be crippled or die. I am saying with experience and time you will be able to ride your bike and feel more alive than most Ferrari owners ever do...

Comparing any vehicles solely on there performance specs doesn't really work. There are many vehicles that are not Italian exotics that are just as fast, or faster. How many smiles per gallon a true enthusiast gets comes from passion and the soul of a vehicle. It's like they have there own emotions. Being hunched over on top of a engine with a two wheels is not going to emulate the experience of owning a Ferrari. Since actually driving either one on a public road. 99.9 percent of the time you will not be driving to maximize and live up to all the performance figures.

I must admit that a little over a year ago i needed a road bike to ride while restoring my 1976 Moto Guzzi 1000. I ended up offering the seller not much more than half of what he wanted by email. Imagine my shock when he accepted my offer. I was one happy rider on the way home! It's a 1980 Yamaha XS1100 and i stole that bike for $480 because of the fact that the bike was Yamaha's first 4 stroke inline and has 95+ hp. It may be old but at 50,000+ miles on it now it doesn't feel tired to me. Nor does it pop out of second gear like many of them do as they age. I must admit that to this day i am so glad i scored such a powerful bike for what i spent to get it. Www was q the muscle cars of my youth i can sure see why it's a lot of fun having the abundance of power and i'm still, to this day thankful for that.

Well Jay, Suzuki models last 2 years, so K7 and K8 is identical engines, but different look because they need to sell more parts, later. Its amazing how identical the power is on the new L1 185 BHP and i think 112.5 Nm, but chassis is way different to improve performance on the track, shorter engineblock to have longer swingarm for better performance in corners. Its amazing how much they could improve on an already perfect bike. They say on the K8/9 a very good tuner could maybe get 5-8 HP more for 10-15.000$. The 750 is also very competitive with around 150BHP.

Jay I can't recall when the Fed Gov told the Imports they would have to come up with some agreeable limit on speed. This was due to Suzuki and Kawasaki breaking to 200 mph barrier on the street. From what I understand the Asian Motor Cycle Companies agreed on 186 mph to be the limit. I don't know if the European Co's agreed on this yet. They will have to do something though.

My first bike was a 250 cc Yamaha. My last was a nice, light (400 pound) BMW twin, the last one with a kick starter. No BMW shaft drive twin has been as light since then.

Why do any folks watch Gran Prix or NASCAR? With MotoGP, you get lots of guys passing, you can hear the shifts, there are crashes, but on modern tracks, no one gets killed! Rossi is the greatest rider of the modern era, but Giacomo Agostini is the greatest all time. He won again and again when guys got killed.
