Back in 1986 my brother, friends and myself moved all the furniture out of the living room and laid out all the Scalextric track I had around the large living room. Not as much as this but all the track from a 1966 Scalextric 6 track set (that was the biggest available back then) plus all the additional track bought during the 1970's that had sat in the loft for years. Had 3rd radius outside curves at the far ends and a 22 x section straight with twisty bits and chicanes within reach of the control area. Used a Scalextric power jump booster cable (how many people have bought one of these??) as the return run power drop at the extremes was noticable (1/2 speed). Managed to over heat and seize a motor on a JPS but it cooled down and was OK. Later used a water spray gun to simulate wet track condition. Played all day on a Saturday and well into Sunday. One friend had his wife phone at 4 AM and asked if we'd seen her husband plus 8 year old son?? After a phone nagging they had to go home. (Women never understand the important fun events in life!!) Now it's all packed back in the loft where it has sat for years since 1986.

that was great fun watching, i must say. and even a dash cam! brings memories when i was a kid but i never had a track a fifth that size. lot more fun than bigger slot cars. hooray for the creator of this track, the racers, the camera man, etc and the uploader !!!!

:) You brought my childhood memories back. We didn't have this kind of colossal track. Just a little bit of track and a few twists and turns but it was so much fun. Especially because the track was made out of rigid rubber you could bend it in all kinds of ways and make all kinds of cool inventions with it. Not to meantion when those cars lost grip on all 4 wheels and they were hanging just from the connector and racing way faster than they should have. :D It was so much fun.

Yes I think it all works with digital signals, both for controlling speed and lane changes. There's a sensor in the track just before the track splits that detects which car is passing, and from that it works out whether to change the direction or not depending on whether the "lane change" button on the controller for that car is pressed or not.

Thanks - The first piece (the ragtime piano music) is called The Smiler by Percy Wenrich, and the second piece is from the album "Music for a Film" by Daniel Bautista (which you can download for free from Jamendo I think).

Thanks. There's a button on the controller - If you don't press it the car goes straight on at junctions, if you press it the car branches off at the junction. Great fun when you're chasing another car and you time it right to branch off to the other lane to overtake, and even better when you have 6 cars running on the track and you're swapping lanes at every junction all the time to try to overtake.

Thanks. There's a button on the hand-held controller to control which way the car goes at a junction - If you don't press it the car goes straight on but if you keep the button held down as the car approaches a split the car takes the non-straight route.

The divider tracks are controlled by a button on the handheld power controller - If the button's not pressed when your car goes over a junction it'll go straight on, but if the button is held down then the car turns off or switches sides.

@TheNewfrewelian It's a system called Scalextric Digital - Up to 6 cars can run on the track at once and it uses digital signals from the controllers to control the speed of each car. The crossover tracks mean you can swap lanes when you want to too. I've only once had all 6 cars running on a 2-lane track but it's great fun!

I started with a small digital set, one that came with 3 Porsche cars I think, and added just a few more straights and curves to make a more interesting track. There's a great "pit stop challenge" set you could start with if you're keen on the single track 1-lanes. Be prepared to spend a lot if you want extra track though - I got a bit carried away over the years and spent several thousand just on track!

@wilkiny74 Thanks! I got away without having to put any jumper cables in - I used a C7030 power base with 2 power supplies, and although the cars do run slightly slower the further they are from the power they still run easily quick enough! The only problem I had was when doing the "drivers eye" filming by strapping a video camera onto a car chassis - With the extra weight of the camera the cars couldn't get enough power to move at all at the far side of the circuit!

Use wires to connect sections of the track near the power supply to the point farthest from the supply. Scalectrix sells a set of them. I have 70 feet myself and had a similar issue ...the wires fixed the problem immediately.

@justind71 Thanks! I designed the track layout as I went along, and having the camera rolling the whole time helped to focus the mind! There were some pieces left over though - Normally I'd try to use every last piece but it usually takes a bit of re-designing towards the end to get them all in and with the camera rolling I just wanted to complete the circuit.
@mtx499
@mtx499 13 жыл бұрын
@animatorSimen I used one digital power base with 2 power supplies plugged into it - The power does drop off slightly towards the far side of the circuit but it's not too noticeable. I once built a slightly longer circuit using all the track I have (around 220ft) and didn't have any power problems, even with all 6 cars running, so I expect you'd be ok, as long as the track is in good condition so it doesn't lose too much power between each track joint.
