2010-15 Toyota Prius 150k Mile eCVT Transmission Fluid Change | DIY | Drain & Fill
My wife's 2010 Prius just hit 150k so I treat her car to an oil change and a transmission fluid change. I like to do oil changes every 5k miles or 12 months on my cars. I also change the transmission fluid on the eCVT of the Prius every 30-50k miles. This eCVT transmissions are just like a manual transmission that you just do a simple drain and fill.
I use the OEM WS automatic transmission fluid as is called for and it takes just under 4 quarts before it started to flow out the fill hole. Make sure the car is level and always, always loosen the fill plug before draining the old transmission fluid. You always want to make sure you can fill the transmission before draining it! The size of the clear tubing I use is 1/2" ID and 5/8" OD.

Yep, and they also recommit nd 10k mile oil changes. I find that it's a good rule of thumb to do half of the recommended because that's the severe service interval. I would much rather do fluid changes more often than not enough.

How much oil is your 2010 burning? We have a 2010 also, and its burning almost 2 qts each 900 miles. Lots of other 2010 owners i've talked to are burning oil too. Seems like a defect.
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 7 ай бұрын
I'm not burning any oil at 5k mile oil changes. It's so important to change the oil every 5k miles as these cars use low tension oil rings. If you follow the 10k mile OCI the oil rings get too much buildup that causes the oil to get buy them and burn. In the manual it shows a 10k mile OCI but that is normal driving which is almost entirely highway mileage. Almost all drivers fall into the severe use category which is doing 5k mile OCI but owners don't follow that from new. None of my 7 cars burn oil and I have always followed the 5k mile OR 12 month, which ever comes first policy.
@benc1927
@benc1927 7 ай бұрын
@@jimsgaragetoys The manual also states that burning 1.1 qts of oil per 600 miles is acceptable. There is tons of information online about the 3rd gen burning oil. You might want to keep an eye on it. Check that oil level before you change the oil at 5,000 miles and you might be surprised.

@@benc1927 I do check it and it's always fine. It's also well known that it's due to 10k mile oil changes that allow carbon build up in the oil rings. Jim: I note that you bought Toyota WS ATF to accomplish your fluid replacement in your Prius' eCVT. The following will help establish that Amsoil "100 Synthetic" Signature Series Fuel Efficient ATF Fluid is vastly superior to the Toyota "Full Synthetic" WS ATF Fluid (made by Exxon Mobil). You can compare the Safety Data Sheets between Amsoil and Toyota fluids and you will find the Toyota WS ATF (and true of the vast number of full synthetics) is mostly composed of hydrocracked-petroleum oil, a Class III Synthetic (extra-refined petroleum to mostly eliminate impurities, but it doesn’t get totally get rid of then entirely). Amsoil Signature Series doesn’t contain a drop of petroleum oil, but a pure chemical mixture of Class IV Synthetic, known as polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and Class V Synthetic (such as Esters), plus top-shelf additives. Toyota lists the Flash Point of their WS ATF Fluid as 347° F (175° C), whereas Amsoil's Flash Point is listed as 435.2 F (224° C), so Amsoil holds up to the heat far better than the Toyota WS ATF. Another convenience factor of the Amsoil "100 Synthetic" Signature Series Fuel Efficient ATF Fluid is thay it is available in collapsible bags making installation a snap (without the need for a pump that only provides a slow fill operation)! The difference between a Full Synthetic and a 100% Synthetic? Rafe Britton, a former Lubrication Engineer at Mobil and the creator of a number of highly educational KZfaq Videos under the heading of “Lubrication Explained,” states in order for an oil company to call its oil product 100% synthetic, it must be composed of either a Class IV Synthetic (PAOs) AND/OR Class V Synthetic (such as Esters), while being completely devoid of refined petroleum. Since 2004 I have exclusively been using 100% synthetic oils, fluids and gear oils made by Amsoil. In my 2013 Subaru Tribeca I use 5W-30, which has a Pour Point (PP) of -58 F and my Toyota Camry Hybrid uses 0W-20, which has a PP of -63 F. I have never experienced any problems starting my vehicles any longer using 100% synthetic products . I also changed the 100% Synthetic ATF in both my vehicles at about 40,000 miles (the Multi-Vehicle ATF in my Tribeca’s transmission and power steering reservoir has a PP of -63 F, while the Fuel-Efficient ATF in my Camry Hybrid (with a similar eCVT as your Prius) has a PP of -85 F. The moment I drove the Camry after the installation of the Amsoil ATF (without any other services being performed on my vehicle), I not only detected the vehicle was running a bit smoother, but also experienced increased power upon acceleration. More importantly, my EV light was coming on more often and staying lit longer (which of course signifies my car is running electrically from the battery, while the gas engine isn't operating) Also around 40,000 miles, I changed the gear oil in both differentials in the Tribeca with Amsoil 100% synthetic 75W-90 Gear Oil (that has a PP of -45 F), which ran much better at any time than the original full synthetic gear oil from the Subaru Factory. I also changed the Coolant and brake fluid in both vehicles to Amsoil. Another benefit of using Amsoil (other than the great performance), my vehicles are covered by the widest warranty in the business regardless of the age and mileage of your vehicle, even if this was the first time trying Amsoil (as long as your vehicle was in good mechanical condition at the time you first started using Amsoil). For those of you seeking a less expensive ATF, you might consider Amsoil "100 Synthetic" OE Fuel Efficient ATF Fluid, which isn't available in the easy-to-pour pack (only the conventional quart or gallon plastic containers). The OE ATF has the same Flash Point 435.2 °F (224° C) as the Signature Series, but a higher Pour Point at -54°F (-48° C) compared to the Signature Series (at -85 F). The lower a Pour Point, the better for running your vehicle in cold temperatures. The OE must be changed according to the manufacturer's specifications for your specific vehicle, however, the Signature Series will go double the distance (than the OE) under severe-driving conditions. For those of you that have a vehicle that doesn't accept a Fuel-Effecient ATF, you may consider the Amsoil 100% Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF (in both the Signature Series and the OE). They also carry 100% Synthetic in both their CVT fluid and Dual-Clutch Transmisson Fluid. I had tried a variety of full synthetics over the years. I began to utilize Mobil 1 for several years thereafter, until I found Amsoil being sold by an auto parts store that is no longer in operation. After I personally emptied the Mobil 1 and I put it in the Amsoil in my car about 20 years ago, I was blown away with the increased performance, better fuel efficiency and the overall quietness of my engine. For full disclosure (as probably guessed right now), I am an Independent Amsoil Dealer (all dealers of Amsoil are independent contractors, as opposed to employees of Amsoil). . If consumers wish to buy the Amsoil products as a Preferred Customer (PC), they will get the oil at a 25% discount, plus free shipping when they spend $100 (plus receiving a $5 coupon for every $100 you spend). It only costs $10 for a 6 month PC membership (or $20 a year) and there is no requirement to purchase (as there is with so many companies offering a membership for a preferred customer program, where there is an automatic shipment involved). If you are tempted to try Amsoil, I invite you to visit the official website of Amsoil and apply to become my Preferred Customer, by kindly utilizing my name (James Norris) in the box underneath the question that asks “Did someone refer you to Amsoil? I have currently been using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my engines with good results and less money. I have been curious though to try Amsoil since they make a 0w-30 in the Signature Series and I would like to run that in my 2009 Corolla Turbo S since I've turbocharged it instead off the 0w-20 it called for before I did the turbo install. I've never looked at the WS ATF for the Prius, I've always used the OEM fluid and had good luck with it. I'll have to look at the Amsoil WS ATF for my next change. Thanks for the tip.

@@jimsgaragetoys Hello Jim and thanks for your reply. Yes, Amsoil sells a Signature Series 0W-30 Motor Oil. In addition, Amsoil produces a 0W-40 Motor Oil in both the Signature Series line and as of last month they have introduced a 0W-40 in an OE line. The drawback in selecting a heavier oil than what the manufacturer specifies is that a thicker viscosity flows through the engine more slowly, therefore spending more time in the hottest parts of the engine (involving the turbo, crankcase and the bearings), where the oil temperature rises higher than a 0W-20 oil. Fortunately, the Amsoil products are 100% Synthetic, where they have a higher thermal-breakdown threshold in comparison to other full synthetics, so if you decide to use Amsoil in a higher viscosity, chances are the extra heat in your engine (resulting from using a higher viscosity) wouldn’t reach the thermal breakdown stage of the motor oil from Amsoil. In addition, the film strength of Amsoil is very durable, due to the exact same size of the molecules, which reduces friction and producing a cooler oil temperature, compared with full synthetics. Thanks for considering to buy the Amsoil Fuel Efficient ATF next you are due and also considering to buy the Signature Series Motor Oil for your Turbo-equipped Corolla! I guarantee that once you become a Preferred Customer, you can be assured the oil will be delivered to your doorstep in 2-3 days. Please keep my name and Referral Code when you apply as a Preferred Customer. Shell Oil Co (a Dutch Company that owns Pennzoil and Quaker State) is a better full synthetic than other full synthetics, since they convert natural gas derived from the ground (containing methane, butane, ethane, propane, pentane and hexane), where they convert it into a liquid lubricant. I have seen it described as a Class III (+) Synthetic. Shell produces a Rotella T6 Diesel full synthetic oil made with the aforementioned gas-to-liquid technology. I have seen Amsoil Preferred Customers saying that they increased their fuel mileage by a much as 10% in their pickup trucks using Amsoil Signature Series Diesel Oil over Shell T6 Diesel Oil. That is a serious savings! For instance, if a pickup truck was getting 20 MPG using Shell and was getting a 10% increase to 22 MPG (by using Amsoil), they would save a gallon of fuel every 200 miles driven; 5 gallons every 1,000 miles and 25 gallons every 5,000 miles. The savings over 5,000 miles would amount to $106.25 (25 gallons x $4.25 per gallon. There hasn’t been any Amsoil Preferred Customer giving a cost savings in using Amsoil v Pennzoil in a gasoline vehicle. My son told me last Saturday he changed the oil himself on his new 2023 Dodge Charger (equipped with a 345 cubic inch Hemi that is factory filled with Pennzoil). I found fascinating that the oil only had 1,111 miles on it (with driving mainly on the Tollway during that span) and he remarked that the oil was black! He changed the oil with Amsoil Signature Series 0W-20. How often do you change the Pennzoil and what color is the oil?
@jimsgaragetoys
@jimsgaragetoys 4 ай бұрын
@@jimn.9990 I've seen many tests and comments from oil specialists that say a 0w-20 won't protect long term like a 0w-30 or 5w-30 due to film strength as the 0w-20 is just so thin and really only used due to EPA mileage goals. I've also had several people in our Corolla group that have gone way beyond the 300k-500k mile mark on 5w-30 and a stock engine. I also find it interesting in some parts of the world that the same engine uses 5w-30. I tend to follow an oil change interval of 12 months or 5k miles, whichever occurs first. I have 7 cars so most of them never hit 5k miles unless I take it on a road trip. The color is generally pretty good but the longer I go the darker it is. The only exception is my wife's 2010 Prius which gets changed at 5k miles. My 2023 GR Corolla calls for oil changes ever 6 months or 5k months for normal service or 2500 miles for severe service. It calls for 0w-20 from the factory but that also makes me a little uncomfortable. Most guys run 5w-30 on the track too.

@@jimsgaragetoys I finally found a “verified customer of Amsoil” ("Mugenizer" from Vancouver, Canada, gender unknown), who wrote a complimentary-email to Amsoil last week claiming not only an Increase in Fuel Economy while using Amsoil Signature Series Motor Oil (after using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Motor Oil), but "Mugenizer" also experienced less ticking sounds coming from "Mugenizer's" engine’s lifters and crankcase, along with a smoother-running engine (resulting from the use of Amsoil), as well! While I have read tons of reviews of verified customers of Amsoil claiming that they experienced an increase in fuel economy with using Amsoil, they either don’t mention their prior brand of motor oil or they mention specific brands of oil (most notably Mobil 1), but not Pennzoil specifically (until now). However, I once saw a review from a verified Amsoil customer claiming he received a 10% fuel economy-increase in his diesel pickup truck with using Amsoil Signature Series Diesel Oil versus Shell Rotella T6 Diesel Oil (containing the same gas-to-liquid technology as the Shell-owned Pennzoil). I have copied and pasted "Mugenizer's" story in the next paragraph (followed by additional paragraphs that not only convert Canada’s metric system to our measurement system in the USA, but will also reveal her percentage of gas mileage improvement, so that we can reasonably calculate how many miles we should expect her to save a gallon of gas, along with the surprising amount of gallons of gas (25.23 gallons, to be exact) saved over the course of a typical 5,000 mile Pennzoil oil-change timeframe (where the savings of Amsoil are much more than the initial cheaper price of Pennzoil), which is hereinafter more fully explained, as follows: From the Amsoil Website Concerning Comments from Verified Customers of Various Amsoil Products: "5 star rating WOW! UNEXPECTED RESULTSBy MUGENIZER, a Verified Buyer from Vancouver on April 11, 2024 I was using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 Full Synthetic for my Honda Pilot 2016 exl with 261K km in it. Obvious crackcase noise & lifter noise. Fuel consumption of 12.9 liters per 100km. Now with using Amsoil Signature Series 0W-20 Full Synthetic...noise in the crankcase & lifters are a lot less. My fuel consumption is now 11.8 liters per 100km. The engine run smoother than it was. I wish i've used Amsoil ever since. Now, i use it in every vehicle i own. I highly recommend this product." Canada utilizes the metric system in terms of kilometers per liter (KPL), which must be converted to miles to gallon (MPG) to make it more understandable for Americans. But before that process can be determined, we have to first reduce the multiple liters in her example down to one liter, in the same way we understand MPG is a measurement of miles per a single gallon of gas (not multiple gallons of gas). You will notice that "Mugenizer" was getting 12.9 liters per 100 kilometers (kms) while using Pennzoil, but "Mugenizer's" fuel consumption dropped to 11.8 liters per 100 kms (a drop of 1.1 liter) when using Amsoil. So in order to reduce 12.9 liters down to 1 liter, we need not only to divide the liters by 12.9, but also correspondingly divide the kilometers by 12.9. In this case, "Mugenizer" was getting 7.75 kms per liter using Pennzoil. "Mugenizer" was getting 11.8 liters per 100 kms using Amsoil, so by dividing 11.8 into both the 11.8 liters and 100 kms (utilizing the same division method as the last equation) brings the net result of 8.47 kms per liter. That is a 9.2% fuel economy improvement with Amsoil! The 9.2% improvement was derived from the following equation: (8.47 - 7.75 = .72; 7.75 divided by .72 = 9.2%). Converting Kms per Liter to Miles per Gallon requires multiplying the kms by .6213712 to arrive at miles, along with multiplying the liter by 3.785411784 to reach a gallon (and then also multiplying the miles by 3.785411784 as well). Using the aforementioned formula, the Pennzoil MPG calculates to 18.23, whereas the Amsoil MPG is 19.92 (an increased differential of 1.67 MPG in favor of Amsoil and is exactly the same percentage increase in fuel economy as was calculated in the metric system: 9.2%)! I will need to utilize the Pennzoil MPG of 18.23 in further calculations to determine the gas savings of using Amsoil. How many miles will "Mugenizer" save a gallon of gasoline while using Amsoil instead of Pennzoil? The Answer: 198.16 miles (calculated as follows: 100% divided by 9.2% = 10.87; 10.87 x 18.23 = 198.16). Want to know the amount of gallons of gas saved by "Mugenizer" by using Amsoil in a typical 5,000 mile Pennzoil oil change schedule? Answer: 25.23 gallons of gas! (5,000 divided by 198.16). The total financial cost-savings by "Mugenizer" would be $100.92 (25.23 x $4.00 a gallon)! Enough leftover money to purchase 3-4 five-quart jugs of Pennzoil! So the several dollars a quart "Mugenizer" would have initially saved from originally buying Pennzoil (rather than Amsoil), would have been more offset by burning $100 in extra gasoline (than if "Mugenizer" would have originally bought the Amsoil instead). "Mugenizer" is now using Amsoil in all vehicles, ever since trying it in the Honda Pilot (apparently not considering Pennzoil any longer) and additionally "Mugenizer" highly recommends Amsoil! Furthermore, Amsoil Signature Series lasts longer than Pennzoil. The Amsoil is guaranteed to last 15,000 miles or one year (whichever comes first) if your driving conditions falls into the "severe category" (most folks fall into this category) or 25,000 miles or one year (whichever comes first) if you drive in "normal conditions" (as defined in your owner’s manual), whereas Pennzoil warranties their oil if you change it within the OEM specifications for your vehicle.

@@jimsgaragetoys Thanks for posting the video. I agree on leaning toward heavier oil because of OEM's EPA over-concerns. My '21 Sienna hybrid manual dictates 0W-16, which is like coffee being poured from the oil pan. Not encouraging! So I went to Amsoil's 0w-20 Signature Series. At 175k miles and four oil analysis show zero wear metals. I'm not a dealer, but Amsoil will ship you product (for free usually) as a Preferred customer. Cheers!
