How to replace the 12V battery on your 3rd Gen. Prius. All you need are simple tools to do this yourself.
The only issues you need to set when reconnecting the battery is, setting the time, date, and navigation volume. I never had to re-learn the automatic power windows or had the radio station channels erased.
Tools:
amzn.to/2awcRDO 3/8 Ratchet
amzn.to/2aYXnIy 3/8 10mm deep socket
amzn.to/2aZPqGv 10mm wrench
Parts:
Battery
Torque specs:
amzn.to/2aDZqER 3/8 Torque wrench
10 ft. lbs - battery bolts

NutzAboutBolts. I just bought my battery I’m about ready to put it in. Your video is beautiful perfect easy clean smartly done my family thinks you. My only question today is simply is there any type of reset or fuse that needs to be pulled during or after or a reset or anything like that I should be concerned with or do I simply do what you said which is a pull out one battery and put in the new one?

Except if you're like me and everything with cars becomes harder than the video shows haha. I had to bang the metal piece to remove the first clamp because it was stuck on there even with the screw removed. Then the screw wouldn't fit through when I tried to tighten it with the new battery in. There were many sparks.

Another grateful viewer here! I’ve changed batteries before but was intimidated to do this for my 2011 Prius… watched your video first and it helped so much, the replacement went seamlessly thanks to this guide! Really appreciate the straightforward but clear directions (especially the 10mm mention! it was so cold when I was doing this, not having to mess around finding the right size was a big help) and the great camera angle. Thank you x a million!

KZfaq at its best! Crystal-clear instructions supported by quality camera work and audio. As a noob I especially liked the "inside baseball" ("it's not a j-bolt so it won't get lost") and knowing what tools (in this case "tool") to gather to get the job done. Never did this task before, took my time, and was done in under 15 minutes. Success! Thank you!

Great useful video. A few notes I might add based on my experience: * If you can get your car to an auto parts store, do so. They can test your old battery with a load tester for free and they give you credit when you turn in your old battery. * I was unable to get a conclusive test using the red battery terminal under the hood. It was necessary to open up the battery access in the right rear. * Made a misstake. I removed my old battery, shut the rear hatch, and exchanged my old for the new in the store. The issue was that when I returned to my car I was unable to open the rear hatch because the hatch latch requires electricity. With some contortion I was able to get myself and the new battery into the rear of the car from the back door. * The new battery cost me $220 after the core charge credit. * The old battery appeared to be the original. So it had lasted 11 years.

things to add: 1. always disconnect neg first, then positive so your tool will not arch if you make a mistake. Reverse (positive, then neg back) like the video. Would be nice to explain why 2. don't close your lid when disconnected or you will have to craw from the back seat and reach the latch inside to release (electronic lock). 3. recommend using same battery and why (venting in car space, size, AGM for crash/acid reason, etc...). 2x the price though.

A very professionally done video. Concise and to the point with no wasteful yammering like so many other car videos. I have a couple of tips to add. I read that even with the negative cable removed, you still have to be careful not to ground out the positive with your wrench since there's power to the cable from the hybrid battery. Also, it would be a good idea to connect a charger or some other 12V supply (under the hood) so you don't lose your various settings maintained by the battery when you disconnect it..

Thanks. This was helpful. We have a 2015 Prius. My wife usually drives it. So had the key fob in my pocket, touched the driver handle to unlock and the horn starts blowing, weakly. I used the key fob to deactivate antitheft and get into the driver seat. Put my foot on the brake, then pressed the POWER button and the LED turns amber. On the display it showed aux battery low. Did not attempt a jump, assumed the 12v batt was toast. After research, looking at this video, I decided it is an easy DIY. Downloaded the procedure from the Toyota.com owner webpage. Replacement battery used is the highly rated Optima Batteries model DS46B24R. Unfortunately, was unable to open the rear hatch, so had to work form inside the car. Folded down the back seats then was able to remove everything as in the video. Confirmed, only had to set date and time, radio and of course ODO settings were preserved. On a side note, the 12v batt is used to power up the ECO and ancillary electronics. The ECU in turn starts the engines.

FYI these batteries are deep cycle, not standard batteries and are harder to find. Also, AAA does not sell these batteries. And they are roughly half the size of a standard battery. I just paid $260 at autozone.

Paid over $500 yesterday at Tony Graham Toyota here in Ottawa. No much choice when you don't know how to fix it plus where to get the correct size 12 volt AGM battery. part of the problem is the design of the Prius.... I understand that the 12 volt isn't used much as a result they age pre-maturely... especially in the -30 degrees weather here. oh well

@@ahiker9477 I can't remember. I just went to the local O'Reilly auto part and had them look it up. I did have to go to a second O'Reilly that was a few miles away as they didn't have it in stock. Think it was like $150 for the battery or something, not a basic car battery since it has to be able to handle starting the engine up more often than a conventional car.

I just want to add that when you change the battery out...don't panic when your car won't start. It has to download some data first. Takes maybe 3-5 minutes. I just changed my battery and it's a piece of cake...except for taking out a few things to get to it and removing and replacing the vent tube it is just the same as any car.

Thanks for the video! Advance Auto Parts had a warning about needing professional installation for this battery, but I couldn't find anything especially hazardous in the Prius Haynes manual. I think the warning is in place because it's absolutely vital to reconnect the exhaust, since it needs external ventilation and could otherwise contaminate the cabin air.

My car had been parked for a month. A nice little mouse decided to make a nest using seat insulation right on top of my neg post. I guess it made enough contact with the grounded body of the car. It killed the battery. Lessons learned, you can still jump your car upfront and drive it all you want as long as you don’t cut it off again. I have one of those battery pack jumper things and I jumped it several times using maybe ten percent of the portable jumper. So with one of those you are not stuck. Under the hood in front you take your fuse cover off, there’s a little red cover you flip over to expose the positive (red) connection. Connect black to a bolt anywhere connected to the body or frame of the car. These batteries are not cheap, I just found one just under 200 bucks with turning your dead one in. I learned something today, don’t let a store “test” your battery while it’s still connected in your car. If the apply a load check, it can smoke your very expensive ecm electronic control module. Tell tell sign it’s your 12 volt battery, after you press start that load will shut off all lights on the dash. If your red lock icon is not blinking, with all the doors shut from the outside. It’s likely a dead battery. If you left a door open or light on inside the car, just jump it and drive around for 30 min. Once the car is on, the high voltage hybrid system charges your 12 volt system. If you run it a while and go to restart and find it dead again. It’s likely the battery has a dead cell, be very curious as to why it’s now dead. Ten year old car, I’m not really gonna think too much about it but a newer battery. Those have had something happen, I don’t know like say a stupid mouse nest! Or chewed wire, loose wire etc. great video as always above, thank you and I hope I helped you too with your adventure. If you don’t have one of those small emergency jumper batteries. Spend the 50 bucks, keep it charged and thank me later when it bails you out of trouble. By the way also not, dead battery equals unable to open the hatchback from outside. So you have to put your back seat down, crawl back there and in the middle bottom where it latches there’s a small little latch you pull from back to front relative to the car. So pull latch forward and hold forward, while holding in that position push up on the hatch back to have it come open. A little heavy to push in this twister position you likely find ourself in. Heck maybe I should make a KZfaq video too on my lessons learned today. Anyone wanna go mouse sniping with me. I shall avenge the death of my battery! 200 dollar stupid mouse!

🤣🤣🤣 yeah, rodents love to build nest in our Prius. Hopefully you fixed that issue. But for the other things you had to do like opening the trunk manually, we got a video on that. Also the positive terminal in the hood, we got a video showing how to pop that cover off too. Hopefully you don’t have any issues with your vehicle after your fix.

I bought the Toyota Prius 12v battery for $45. I then returned the same battery that the dealer had charged me $210 for, that I had installed. The $45 battery was at interstate battery, they just happened to have one but I don't expect that anyone would find another deal like that. It was the identical, exact same brand and battery that Toyota sells.

Which model was the one you got at Interstate? Going to try them this week.
@romansten9
@romansten9 6 жыл бұрын
Ben Hines It was a geniune Toyota Prius battery. At Interstate I always ask about their "scratch and dent" batteries. They have small scratches or missing labels, etc. Usually brand new, but they give less of a warranty. They sell any of those for $45. They happened to have a Toyota Prius battery, identical to my old battery. Its worth asking, but they are hard to find that way. Also check for the Optima made for Prius. They also gave me the option of putting in like a lawn tractor battery, or any battery that fits. They have as many or more amps than the original. But they are supposed to be vented batteries (or maybe sealed woukd work too?) because they are inside the passenger compartment.... and batteries give off gases. If you use a different battery they can rig up a way for the connections to work.
