This works on all 3rd gen Prius. If your hatch is stuck closed due to a dead battery, this will help you to open the hatch so you can replace the battery without crawling into the car to replace it manually.

Great info: Good idea to test the theory BEFORE disconnecting the battery... Did have to push up on the hatch while pushing the tiny lever...it did not just pop open by itself.

Scott Pearce yeah, it’s not a pop up trunk, you’ll need to push up on the trunk to open it.

Thanks for this tip, I just went through this with a dead 12 volt battery. I did end up with AAA coming out and giving me a jump start. I now have the opposite problem, the hatch will only open manually! It will no longer open when I open the car with the key fob. All other doors open normally. Have you ever heard of this before? I'm not sure I want to climb back there every time I need to open the hatch!

Check if there’s any burnt fuse.

@@NutzAboutBolts Wow, thanks for your quick reply! I did have that thought but can't for the life of me figure out what fuse/circuit controls the rear latch mechanism. I did look at the chart in the owners manual as well as the information on the lid of the fuse box but could not figure out which one I needed to check. Any ideas on figuring out which one controls that? Everything else seems to be working normally.

@@peon402 I’d get a fuse detector prong to check each fuse in the kick panel and the engine compartment. Then if all the fuse is looking good, I’d check the switch itself to see if it went bad.

Thank you. The last bit about having to hold the lever down while you push up on the hatch was helpful to me. If doesn't work if you just pull the lever and then release it.

i figured this out on the prius i just bought today. it's a royal pain to have to do this. what battery is dead ? it will be easier to replace that then have to constantly manually open the hatch . the only reason i got the prius is for toting things around

Good to know because my button on the outside has not been working properly sometimes I'll stand out there for 5 minutes trying to get the button to initiate the opening.

Just a sidenote, for those who have a 2015 Prius station wagon, you need to pop off the little panel that is in the rear hatch door from the inside then use your finger or flat head screwdriver to slide the latch to the right to unlock the rear hatch door.

I tried this. I can clearly hear the a pop and the door pops open but only a little. It is still latched somehow. Could it be that I am just not strong enough to pull the latch (inside that little compartment). I tried to pull harder on it using a glove but nothing. Do you have any explanation for that. Thanks for the video by the way

Renee Jones you have to pull and hold, then push up or else it’ll still be latch to the hinge. It’s a heavy door so you’ll need 2 people if you can’t push it up.

@@angelkillz8926 yeah, it doesn’t need a lot of force to pull on the lever to open the trunk... can you open the trunk with the battery connected and opening it with the remote by opening from the outside?

Thanks Brother...ps, found that if the rubber seal for the hatch is moved.. now on either side it MUST be tucked back in under that plastic, OR it WILL run the battery dead... was on warranty so free $300 battery from Larry Miller Toyota,, 85ave Bell rd...

@@steelers8752 if your battery is plugged in, have your key with you and press the back of the door latch to open it up, does it open up normally? Some people do the manual way because their battery die so they can’t open it electronically.

I have to go through this to open a trunk of a car? I'm 6:3 for God's sake. The manufacturer or whoever designed those vehicles lacks comfortably. Any car I can't open it's trunk at a push of a button is no longer a car but a Cccaa.
