2010 Dodge Journey 3.5L - Engine ticking, Engine Flush with oil change

Performing an engine flush is always a good and cheap first step in going after an engine tick. This 2010 Dodge Journey 3.5L had engine ticking and was in need of an oil change. We suspect the ticking could be sludge buildup blocking oil flow. Flushed engine using Amsoil Engine Flush for 20 minutes and drained. Replaced with Amsoil XL 10w30, good for 12k miles or 1 year. Engine seemed to run quieter...will know more later.
41 days since the engine flush & oil change...showing a definite improvement so far. Last week when I listened to the motor running at idle, everything was in good running order.

Rocker arm assembly is defective. Usually the exhaust arm passenger side 2nd position is the first to go. If you pull the covers you will be able to see which one is the worst because you will be able to move it side to side. If you hear any "ticking" in any engine, quick fixes in a bottle or an oil change will not solve the issue which is parts wearing. In this case, if that roller bearing on the rocker assembly shears, it will go through the cylinder wall and destroy the engine. As you are hearing this ticking the roller is grinding the lobe on the cam, that is why you hear the ticking, as you put more miles on the cam it will continue to worsen and eventually shear the roller pin. Sounds like this one is just starting, you might get another 5k or 50k out of it before it shears, but it will shear and an oil change will make no difference to its defect from Chrysler. Thank you for the feedback. If it’s wearing then why does the noise come and go? I would think the noise would be continuous.

@@Stromzilla Partly from the oil journal rod sticking and unsticking, partly from the play in the assembly itself. It will "come and go" at first, and as that cam wears it will become a constant loud tapping. Chrysler put these 3.5's in everything from Chargers to Minivans and Cherokees, they know of the issue and do not care to issue a recall because these engines are only made to go for a "lifetime" of 100k before rebuild/trade in. Hi, I have a 2016 dodge grand caravan, is this part same for 3.6 pentastar engine? And replacing rocker arms and camshafts solve the problem?

Replaced all rockers and lifters, engine still has tick 🤦

Had same thing. Changed the lifters. Only lasted three years, before ticking came back

How much did changing your lifters cost you ? And where did you take tha car to get fix ?

Good job Strom. I flush my engine with diesel before putting in the new oil. For me it is to remove all the sludge in the pan which makes a big difference in the way the oil looks 2 weeks after the oil change. I don't really like running the engine with funny stuff in the oil because it pushes all that stuff through the bearings after loosening it up. Same with the automatic transmission. If you run additives through it it swells the o-rings. Best thing to do for it is to remove the pan every 60k and clean the pan and put in a new filter.

Last year we replaced the automatic transmission oil pan on the 2007 Dodge truck. Installed a new pan with drain plug. Did this with 50,000 miles on the vehicle and was surprised to see all the sludge buildup in the original pan. My plan is to do a drain every 30,000 miles. About 6 qts will come out which is roughly half the total. I believe this’ll be better than a total flush every 100,000, Doing the same thing with the CV transmission...drop oil every 30,000 rather than wait till 105,000 for a total flush which is difficult to do anyway.

Ours does it too even when the engine is off it suddenly ticks. Seriously when its shut off it ticks! Touching nothing, not on at all.

I have 2015 Dodge Journey, just had oil change and plugs, and coils changed. Mine still tick upon acceleration as well as shake a litte when stopped.

This engine seems to be a real stinker when it comes to lifters and ticking. I’m amazed with all the feedback on this topic and pretty much realizing too many folks are having this same issue with their 3.5L engine.

Why would you not use recommended SAE 5W-20 synthetic motor oil for this car. Changing oil weight is not recommended on newer vehicles like the old days especially with low miles

Recommended oil for a 2010 Dodge Journey 3.5L is 10w30.

Sounds like High pressure injector noise to me which is normal.

Do you know about these 3.5s? Every thing I have read leads to rocker arm assembly noise but the sound is the loudest at the fuel rail and Injectors?

Where did you get 1 year oil change? We don’t know what the oil change schedule was nor do we know the oil quality.

The engine tick is now. This is the first oil change that I performed on this vehicle. How is it you can make such a bold statement about 1 year oil change being the root cause when we just did an oil change and know nothing about the previous maintenance history. The ticking was there prior to installing a new filter or new oil.
