Welcome to a point of view drive with a 2010 Honda CR-V EX AWD. Taking it out on the highway for three different trips with and without brand new Michelin tires to measure the highway fuel mileage of this CR-V. Inspired by the Daily Motor, highway mileage can vary widely with the EPA numbers depending on the age, make, and model of the car. We'll be back with a full review of this 2010 CR-V, one of the best and most reliable used cars you can purchase.

I have a 2008 CR-V EX-L and one time I got 30 mpg on the highway, county road, and with a little City driving. I have Michelin defender LTX M/S on it. This was also in Michigan and it was in the 80s. So elevation might have an effect on it too. It's been a very reliable car!

I think a much larger factor is your air pressure than the tire type or tread. A higher pressure will generally get you better mileage than a lower one, of course I am referring to pressure levels within a safe operating range, nothing crazy. You stated that your pressure was at 30 psi. That is considered to be on the low end and you could probably easily go as high as 40ish with no problems or poor tire wear. Most tire stores will usually fill tires to a default of around 35 psi. I generally go higher at around 38-ish for not only better mileage but also a better feel and response in steering.
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The air pressure recommended is usually to balance ride comfort, handling and overall tire wear. So maybe worth doing a few extra PSI if you know you will be on a long highway trip. I also forgot to mention that the EPA highway loop averages 48 mph and these not so aerodynamic CR-Vs are probably more sensitive to the higher 70 mph average I was trying to achieve.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive Thanks. Yeah I'm curious what tier pressure the EPA use when running their tests. The speed definitely makes a difference though.

This is fascinating, I'm out in Colorado and for the routine highway driving I do, 70 MPH is about the average I go, and I typically get over 28 MPG, current mileage is just over 80k. One difference although I doubt it would have a major impact, the TPMS warning light is not on in my car. I might run a test like yours to see what I'm truly getting for fuel economy

Thanks for watching and commenting. That is great efficiency. Assuming it’s AWD and not 2WD and you are in the flat areas of CO an not at altitude?Your trip computer may be 1-2 MPGs off but even then that is still good. Yea, we need to fix the TPMS sensor but did check tire pressure prior to these tests. Thanks again for watching.

I have a 2005 cr-v awd I recently did a pretty good highway trip. I got 24 mpg on the way up and 27.4 on the way home. I used the ac the whole way up and use the ac for about half the time on the way home. So use of the ac seemed to make a difference for me. Tire pressure was 39psi.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive I forgot to mention the drive was 180 miles each way with about equal amounts of rain each way. On the way up I filled the tank with regular gas and a bottle of red line fuel system cleaner. On the way home I just topped up about half a tank with regular gas. My speed was mixed between 60 and 80 mph. Oil used was valvoline 5w-20 maxlife and the rear diff had a fresh change. Also recently replaced the pcv valve and knock sensor and vtec solenoid.

@cozzoli39
@cozzoli39 Жыл бұрын
@@BeyondTheTestDrive no. The start rattle isn't an issue on the 2005. I replaced it because the gasket started leaking oil. I probably could have done just the gasket but I figured with 210k miles it wouldn't hurt to just replace the whole thing. I use only honda parts for most things like this. So far so good.

My 2003 Cr-V with a K20 gets 32mpg on the highway at 50mph but drops to 24mpg at 60mph. On the city, it's worse, drinks a lot of petrol, I don't know why. Only getting 16mpg at an average of 15mph stop-and-go. 😪. How do you get 21mpg on the city? Average speed?
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive Жыл бұрын
Hi Kirstie and thanks for the comment. These cars are very sensitive to highway speed, as you have noticed, due to aerodynamics and larger tires. We have the K24 engine, which is newer and more efficient. And our 21 mpg is really in mixed, or what I would call suburban driving, with an average speed of probably around 30 mph. I am sure in pure city driving stop and go, ours would drop into the teens also. Thanks again for watching. The pure city environment is where super small lightweight cars with CVTs, and hybrids, shine.

@BeyondTheTestDrive 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. That is really good for a 2007. I think the measured mileage in this video is highly speed dependent. 70 MPH is much faster than the EPA test speeds. And sure the higher miles on this one does make it less efficient. Thanks again and happy motoring.

Good point. I didn't think of that. Honestly. 75 is probably the fastest I'll go on certain stretches in the Northeast based on the speed limit, Typically, I'm doing about 60 to 65 with cruise control. Though I will pass semis at about 80-90 just to get past them, lol And I probably will try michelin's next time. As you said, the cabins not quiet by any means, Maybe the Michelin will be quieter than my Continentals

It's good Idea to switch off "AWD" manually so maybe I got better MPG !? If I keep it two wheel drive I will got better MPG??
@BeyondTheTestDrive
@BeyondTheTestDrive Жыл бұрын
I know on this specific CR-V you cannot switch it off. AWD is never really on, for some systems like this CRVs, it only directs power to the rear wheels when there is slipping on the front wheels. For AWD most of the fuel penalty is related to the extra weight and some frictional losses.

@@AraourKarkour not worth it. The 2 wheel drive version of this only gets 1mpg better. Plus it will really confuse your engine computer. There is a clutch pack also there that connects to the main front transmission, so fairly complicated.
