Helpful video, thanks. I picked up a 5-speed Legacy wagon a few weeks ago, and this is on my list as the shifter has an appalling amount of slop in it. I keep hearing about the "universal joint" in the shifter linkage as well, so I may as well do the whole thing while I'm at it.

The jack I got from Pep Boys. If you go to 7:50 you'll see a small circle to the left of the rear bushing, the shifter sits inside that. If you leave the shifter in you have a very limited range to move the that rod around and get the rear bushing in.

Yeah mine was on super tight, sorry a response took so long, my only recommendation would be to throw a wrench on it and use a breaker bar of sorts... I have some Thule ski rack bars from an old car and just cut one in half and I slide it over my wrenches if I need more leverage... Maybe not the smartest thing (sheering bolt heads off is a risk) but its worked every time so far. Hope you got it off (haha).

I did have to replace the tie on the reverse lockout cable. I just used a regular zip-tie to do it.

I pretty sure it will work. The parts may be slightly different along with the method of reaching them under the car (ie this vid), but I have a buddy with an 05 wrx and he has both bushings in his. Get under your car and see what it looks like with respect to this video then check rallypartsdirect or other sites for your bushings.

Well not really sure there... haha. I have accumulated so many tools from different projects, I didn't really pay attention to brand or anything. Got a lot from Harbor Freight, Sears, Pep Boys, Lowe's... looks like most of it is Craftsmen or Kobalt. If I'm missing a tool or wrench or something I just end up going to the store and finding one specific tool, ended up with lots of stuff over the years.

My front shifter bushing bolt won't move. You're saying it's tight but mine won't move at all. When I push/pull on it as hard as I can I'm moving the entire transmission up and down, lol... I think I might have to PB Blast it.

I installed this last week and I'm getting like vibrations and like chatter I wonder if I didn't ziptie the reverse cable good enough to the shifter, and it's kind of hard to get into gears I probably didn't use enough grease

It's bad for your torque wrench to use it as a breaker bar. Just sayin... Great vid BTW ;)

where d you get that cool little jack thing...and why exactly is it easier to take the shifter out when doing the rear bushing? Is it just so its easier to get in? Thanks for this great video plan on doing this soon.

did you have to replace the pull tie on the reverse cable? I am on a 09 sti wagon and doing Exhaust,Cobb short throw, and cobb front and read bushings myself soon. Great vid hope I have the patience for all of that.

Hey great video! What torque ratings did you do on the bushings? Also when you cut the line you don't need to use it anymore?

What music is this? Doing the kartboy shifter + bushing setup as well. Would it be easier or more of a PITFA to take the shifter assembly (piece with both bushings) out? Thanks for putting up the video.

Interesting... I'm not too familiar with the older wrx's. My buddy's feels very similar to mine, he has the kartboy shifter installed as well and has noticed it loosening up a bit. Might be due to mileage on the transmission? not sure...

I plan to only do the rear bushings. Could most of this be avoided for that?
@froschein
@froschein 11 жыл бұрын
Did you do that because you have too much movement in the shifter? I have too much movement in my shifter, so i'm wondering if I should be replacing the bushings, like you did in your video, or i should replace another washer like piece that exists closer to the shifter on the inside of the car. I checked that and that was broken

How in the heck did you fit a wrench where you dissasembled the shifter assembly from underneath the car? I found it almost impossible to take it out and then impossible to put it back together!

Im installing the bushings on my STi soon. Did you put it up on four jack stands? If so, how? Im used to using two and doing one side at a time jacking up on the lower control arm on each side. Thanks!
@DrewAbarca
@DrewAbarca 10 жыл бұрын
I did put it up on four jack stands. My driveway is pretty level and with the car in gear and e-brake on while jacking it up it wasn't going anywhere. I just jacked up each tire individually, don't really remember the order at this point. I did drivers side first, then passenger side. I'm sure you could get away with using two.

Can you change just the shifter or are the bushings required? if no, why?
@DrewAbarca
@DrewAbarca 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can just change the shifter without changing the bushings if you want to. The bushings tighten up the shifting so you don't feel as much play in the shifter when moving through the gears but there is no requirement to change bushings because you change the shifter or vice versa.

The rear bushing is being a bitch for me on my 2011 wrx! I can get one bolt started, but then not the other and vise versa... I tried for like an hour before I had to call it quits for the night, whats the trick? Patience? Lol. I didnt need to do any of that cross member removal either... Maybe its different on STIs but the front bushing end was easily accesible without removing any cross member.
@DrewAbarca
@DrewAbarca 7 жыл бұрын
I am not sure how different it is but I'll agree with you that is is a huge pain. The trick for me was patience, the video doesn't show the amount of time I spent trying to figure out how to get in there. I'd jump on NASIOC and see if anyone has a good method to do it. You might try removing the shifter on the inside to give it more play? Not sure.
