This video was 9 years ago, and still saving money, I got a pair of focus SEL hatchback with 126k and 113k for less than $4500 both, both shudder in first and when everyone was saying new clutch or new tranny this trick right here 5 times was the fix, now they both drive like silk, fun cars, THANK YOU! 🎉🎉🎉

I agree! I got a steal on a 17 Focus but heavily researched transmission issues first. If I hadn't ran across this video there's a good chance I wouldn't have chosen the vehicle, but this helped me to feel like I had a viable solution to keep things relatively smooth. Very thankful for this online posting!!

My 2014 fiesta started shuddering about a month ago. It now has less than 7000 miles on it. I watched your video, took the car out and followed what you said then drove it around. Didn't shudder once and drove like I just took it off the showroom floor. I'm surprised and relieved. Thanks........

Very appreciative of this posting. I have a 17 model. I had some noticeable shudder shortly after getting the car in the first couple of gears, mainly first. I followed this video and can attest with driving a couple hours a day it kept actual noticeable shudder from occuring for almost exactly two weeks before it began to start up again. Sometimes if I drove the car around town it would shift or engage a little sloppy, but not the actual low speed shuddering that is the main complaint. When it returned I performed what's posted in a safe isolated area again, and it went away once more. With as much as I drive it seems like the DIY solution will be lasting about two weeks in a combination of cold and medium temps. To not have the (small) chore of finding somewhere to perform this a couple times a month I have a low traffic merging area on my daily commute I can floor the car in first gear maybe once a week and see if it keeps the issue from resurfacing, since I'll be keeping the clutch brought in tighter with a weekly aggressive launch. I most recently have done the aggressive launch from about 10mph in first gear to avoid peeling out and that seems to still work for the problem.

I own a 2012 Focus SE hatch with 50,000 miles. I have had the car in and out of the dealer for the shudder problem. I get 34mpg on average and overall the car has been great. I had a slight shudder from 1st to 2nd again and was getting ready to take it back to the dealer. I tried the "clutch scrubbing" and it worked!! I went out to an flat open road and from a stop floored it up to about 75MPH 5x. The shudder is gone!! Thanks for your advice! Great info..

Can I subscribe!! Bad ass tip... I also heard that some of those early 2011 thru 2016 little fords had a bad ground design of the car... Instead of grounding to the frame the car it grounds just above the battery to the body which is heavily painted at the factory... Supposedly for other types of transmission issues slipping, shifting, bolting in 1st gear the paint where these vehicles ground does not support enough amperage inside of the tranny... Taking a wire brush and scraping off all the thick paint there clean will fix other major transmission issues too... Scrape any paint off of the bolt too and remember to cover the cable end and bolt with a little dielectric grease or whatever that stuff is called... We don't want any corrosion plus better contact... This will give these dry clutch transmissions proper amperage thus making them shift and double clutch efficiently... I think it's right near the battery which is suspect because most cars are grounded to the frame... Bad design... Many owners of older Fords swear by this 5-minute fix and say they have had no further problems... Great channel... I like this clutch scrubbing GIG!! The way things are going with the supply chain those updated clutches may never arrive... Thanx man!!!

First off, thanks SOOO much for these Ford videos! Have helped me with my 2016 Edge and now my 2014 Focus. I bought the Focus, not knowing what I was getting into. It has 140K miles, and is in great condition, BUT the trans shudder is annoying at least and could possibly be unsafe at worst. I did the procedure detailed in the video and for a week it seemed to alleviate the issue. BUT, it came back and worse still, now when I accelerate hard from a stop, when car shifts from first to second there is a VERY loud/hard "thunk" that is heard and felt. It is only heard/felt from 1st to 2nd. I have confirmed two more times that under a hard acceleration that "thunk" happens. If I accelerate moderately or lightly it is fine (w/exception of intermittent shudder). Ford dealers in my area are about $150 just to diagnose--so hoping someone may have ideas on that "thunk".

I have a 2012 Ford Focus SE Sedan with 107,532 miles. I have never had a problem with this car and have never had to replace anything with the drive-train. My transmission started shuttering recently. The real reason for a shudder in the transmission, is when transmission fluid leaks into the clutch pack, this transmission has been designed with a dry clutch, not a wet clutch. You are going to get a little bit of shudder when the clutch gets wet due to slippage. I have always driven this car aggressively, They truly are sporty little cars, DCT transmissions are not made for slugish driving. Don't be afraid to put the power down, even if it is only a 167 peak horsepower 4 cylinder engine, you're going to help increase the life of the vehicle.

A hint for parking lots or heavy traffic driving... Use the sport/mountain mode. The car is quicker to engage/disengage the clutch, remains in a lower gear, and doesn't seem to adversely impact the learning curve for standard Drive mode

This is a very good video and explanation of how and why this hybrid transmission works and acts. It also actually clears up the low gear start shudder. Ford should maybe add this to the owners manual... or just make a transmission that works right. XD

Just bought my 13' focus, I love it, I do notice a bit of a 'shutter" when I am in stop and go traffic, but I tend to drive like a "grandma" anyway in any vehicle I drive. I noticed when I have to lean a little more on the gas it does it a little, but I figured it was part of how the car drives with this type of transmission. At any rate, at 51K miles, it's still under the extended Ford Warranty, and my dealership gave me a 2 year drive train warranty, and I have a 4 year overall warranty/emergency roadside assistance- the whole nine yards. I have to take my car in for the fuel tank recall in December, I'll probably mention the shutter to them at that time and see what transpires. Normally I buy Honda's, but right now Honda's only real 'hatchback"- the Fit is a total joke compared to the civic hatchback of days gone by. Those were fun, reliable vehicles in their day.

Spot on, great video, thank you. We have a 2013 focus that is driven most of the time by my wife and I've noticed a slight shudder when accelerating gently. I thought the friction surface was getting glazed over and did a few hard accelerations and it then drives fine until I drive it a few weeks later and get the same issue. We recently had a recall letter for the software update and it has stopped the transmission whirring and clicking whilst parked and it seems to shift slightly smoother. My Ford dealer also said that they have ordered an upgraded clutch which is on back order so I hope its the F model you mentioned and it will fix the problem for good.

+HankDCFC I am in the same situation, i have a 2013 focus, it started with a slight shudder and now sometimes it grinds quite loudly and for up to 2-3 seconds long. jerking motions and such. I got the letter from Ford for the recall and software update. since then, there is just a slight shudder sometimes and have not heard any grinding. They have also put me on order for a new clutch, but they had not given me any info about the issue. they had just told me that it needs a new clutch but its safe to drive see you in a month. This video definitely opened up my eyes on the issue. I hope its the new model also and the problem is fixed for good.

Hey guys, We had the new clutch fitted just over a month ago and have driven approximately a thousand miles on it. The car drives really well now with zero juddering and smooth gear changes. I haven't noticed any strange mechanical noises and am very pleased with the outcome so far. I recently drove a VW Golf with a DSG gearbox whilst on a business trip and I would say that my Focus now compares very closely with the VW. The jury is still out on the longevity but Ford has extended my warranty on the transmission for seven years so they must be confident.

@@marcoJcarbo From personal experience (2012 Focus SE) I floor once a day to get on the highway to work, and I don't have any shudder problems. But, when I do a long road trip (300+ miles) and get back into city stop-and-go traffic it starts to shudder again. This is only a problem between 0-10 mph, and that goes away after flooring it once or twice. Definitely a personality quirk of the car.

Perfectly explains our issue(s). As a retired master tech from a competing manufacturer, I have trouble wrapping my mind around a car that delivers outstanding fuel economy (47.8 on a recent 200 mile round trip) when driven easily and yet the shuddering and flare on shift renders it undriveable. Repeat owner to Ford? Probably. But I'll do better research next time. Overall? 'A' for the concept, 'F' for the execution. Not ready for prime time (or any other for that matter)

The solution for me was selling the car to carmax. I should not have to replace clutches every 10k miles. I shouldn't have to go WOT every couple weeks to keep it shifting properly, negating the good gas mileage the car is supposed to get. I shouldn't hear transmission grinding noises every time I go around a corner and the car shifts. My car is now unfortunately someone else's problem. I now have a mazda 3, that drives like a dream with a bigger more powerful engine, drives smoothly and gets much better real world mileage. I gave ford a chance as if love to buy domestic cars if they were reliable but they just aren't. Keep up the good work on the videos though, you've provided a ton of great information and support for those of us who own/have owned these poorly engineered cars.

falcompsx - Even though the Fiesta has been known for transmission issues, I had a 2011 Mazda 3 that was going in and out of the Mazda dealership at least 3-4 times a year for suspension work, had to buy two wheels for it (and I bought it brand new too, don't drive like a woman) and then finally the last straw for it was tires were wearing funny. I traded it in for a certified 2014 Ford Fiesta and I'm officially problem free. Good luck with your Mazda!

I have been dealing with this for some time. This problem started happening almost immediately. I have taken it to the Dealer at least 5 times all on my dime. The Dealer is about a 2-hour drive from my home. I wasn't scared at first and as always they tell you the driving performance of this car takes time to learn how to drive it. At first, I tried everything that told me and did exactly as they asked, however, the last time something happened, that something fell off my car. I had been telling them something was seriously wrong with my car and this was going to be the last time I would have it brought in and if they could not fix it they could keep it!! For this car, it wasn't just the shudder it was much more than that. I finally talked to the service manager and Ford as well. I felt like if I could somehow make them understand in their vocabulary maybe I could get this car fixed right. Talking to the service manager I said... Look I don't mean to be disrespectful but have you ever driven an eighteen wheeler? He said yes I have, I said great now we are getting somewhere... When you drove the truck did you ever experience losing a drive line, he replied, unfortunately, yes, I said me too. Now if you know what that feels like then maybe you can understand what driving this car feels like (this was before the part fell off my car). He told me I could have the car towed in at their expense, and so after the 4th or 5th time on working on the transmission, my warranty mileage was increased to 150,000 miles instead of the 36,000. Now I will be taking it back to the shop again. I have decided I don't want to deal with this kind of frustration for the car because if they keep using the same parts and replacing it over and over and over again it will literally never be truly fixed. I can't believe all the problems I have had with this car. I and my Family have always been a Ford family but this one really takes the cake. I only hope when the real decision comes down in October it will be in our favor (the customer). Oh, and BTW the last transmission they put in really dropped my gas mileage. Wishing everyone the very best if you have one of these cars, and may your outcome be successful.

I don't know what black magic you use, but this works. To be honest I was very skeptical. Trying to find a "country road" in South Florida is not easy. I finally found a large parking lot in an industrial park and performed the "clutch scrub". It was exhilarating to say the least. But the amazing thing was...it worked. My 2014 Focus had some annoying clutch shudder off the line and now it's completely gone. I don't know when or if it will return, but at least I have a fix. Since I don't believe in PFM (Pure Fracking Magic), it would be nice if you provided a reason why this works.

Some of the complaints I think are from people who have a lead foot. My other car is a 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid. It has a CVT, and on that car you learn to drive like a grandma...even though the car has the IMA, and enough juice to zoom down the road.. I see the way these Focus drive isn't much different. If you lean on the pedal....it will slip and shutter, but if you learn the sweet spots, the car drives like a dream. Great little car, so far I love it. I traded in my 11' Nissan Rogue for this car....which the Nissan CVT's are known junkers..even worse than these.

Why hasn't Ford scrapped this transmission? Should've been done years ago. They are killing their legacy by continually putting these bad transmissions out, endangering the people who drive them, and doing very little to nothing about it. Someone upstairs needs to be terminated, or made to drive one of these and go through the headaches their customers have been put through. I'm a born and raised Ford man. My dad had owned 4 generations of Fords since the 60s and my first car was a mustang. I almost jumped on the new focus when it came out, I'm a hatchback junkie. I'll never own one. Looking at VW Golf, Kia/Hyundai Forte/Elantra Mazda 3, which is no longer a Ford product, or a Chevy Spark. This transmission issue has drove me into the competitors pocket. In just shocked car and drive ranks them so high in the hatchback lines.

Thankfully theres a class action lawsuit and I plan on getting my monies worth back from the whole experience. Thank you for yet another informative and useful video! Much appreciated. My daughter has an early 2012 Focus SEL that was literally owned by her grandmother and driven as such. With only ~8.5k miles on it now, we've had it in once for this issue. Essentially, shuddered horribly when hot, but would drive just fine before that 20-30min mark and is delivering over 30mpg in mixed driving. Having passengers seems to make the issue more pronounced. PCM update was all that was tried to date and it hasn't worked. Would love to time bringing it back in when the "F" version of the clutch becomes more readily available to make sure that we get a (more) permanent fix. Not sure how or when to do that, but curious to know more about this new version clutch and how we go about getting this properly handled.

Thanks for this. It's a shame you have to WOT the car so often; it eliminates one of the benefits of the DPS6 - good gas mileage. I've had similar experiences with my 2013. If I drive in lots of stop-and-go traffic on a hot day, the transmission shifts awfully and sounds like something is eating itself in the gearbox. I just had a D-revision clutch installed a month ago. It drove *very* well for about a week, and the horrible fork-in-a-blender sounds were almost eliminated. But now the sounds are back, along with some of the shudder. Can't wait to ditch this stupid car.

Very interesting. I just had my 2014 Focus, build date 1/13/2014, not leaking, reflashed for shudder. The shudder read out was 200rpm. The reflash worked great for about a week, then I started getting shudder on 1st to 2nd transition again. I tried your scrubbing technique, and it helped dramatically. So what is it that makes this scrubbing technique work? Does it change or reset the learning parameters? Does it physically affect the clutch, as in getting rid of glazing or dust buildup? Another related question, how long does it take for the firmware version that was flashed to show up on Oasis? I checked Oasis two days after the flash was done, and it does not list any firmware version under the F/W menu. This made me doubt that a flash was done, so I asked the service advisor to get me the firmware number that was installed, this service was made 09/19/2014. I have not heard back from the service advisor, nor has oasis been updated. I contacted the service manager and he told me it can take up to a month for the changes to be reflected in oasis. Is this true? The invoice lists the part installed for the update as 7B546

Hi! My focus has 47k miles on it and the shudder is intermittent. Every time I schedule and appt with ford it's gone the day before. Well two days ago for 3 days in a row, it was grinding, slipping the clutch when climbing a hill and making crazy noises (which I know are common to a certain extent on a DCT). I was out of town for work in a work vehicle, I came home and now it's gone again. It was worse than ever, I can't even begin to describe how bad it was. The noises were extremely loud metal on metal. I'm pretty sure it's never had the clutches replaced, TCM flashed or the new seals put in. I've had it for a few months. I have an appointment in two days with ford, but now the problem is gone yet again. Please help. Do I need to drive it more to warm it up and will it start doing it again? I noticed it does it much more on longer trips. Thanks!

"People should understand what they are buying first" - Thank you Johnnyedify. For future reference, how exactly do you suggest I do that? You see, I didn't just wake up one morning take a stroll down to my local Ford Dealership, put on a blindfold, spin three times and buy the first car I bang into. I did my due diligence and then I did more because for me, handing over my hard earned cash for luxuries does NOT happen easily. In the 4 months leading up to my purchase of a 2012 Ford Focus Trend 2.0 Auto Sedan, I found not one single mention of a transmission problem or dual clutch shuddering on the internet because nobody had started complaining yet. I researched 100's of reputable sites, reviews, forums and a few dodgy ones too and not one comment. The only people who knew at that time, where FORD and yet, I quizzed the salesman and his supervisor about any possible issues I should be aware of because I couldn't afford being saddled with a Lemon and both FORD SALESMAN LOOKED ME IN THE EYES AND OUTRIGHT LIED! Brilliant car, you can't go wrong, they said. I even asked the warranty girl if there was some info being withheld when she tried to UP sell the 3 year standard policy to an Extra Expensive everything included and SHE SAID NO! It is FORD who withheld critical information from their buyers about a known issue, that in my case, has lead to three near misses when pulling out into peak hour traffic, not due to my error, 30 years driving and not one accident should prove that. They were due to the transmission, shuddering and clunking in the middle of an intersection with cars flying towards you. Terrifying!! If only I'd understood what I was buying first! So please, tell me Johnnyedify....what do you suggest I do next time to better understand what I am buying?

The powershift transmission is great as long as you have a lead foot. The car allows you to make aggressive throttle inputs without jolting forward to give the clutch time to fully engage. If you always give your car heavy throttle input it will never shudder. I notice that my aggressive driving style has made the car perform perfectly. Now because it anticipates me stomping on it, the DCT stays in the same fucking gear even if you pussy foot the throttle. Is it a cheap car? Yes. Does the super low purchase price of a used one make it worth it? Yes. Does it work and is it fun and fuel efficient? Yes. Do people need to just learn their car and like what they drive? Also yes. Even though I wind the engine out everywhere I go I average 30 MPG and it doesn't cost me any more in fuel than my old Yaris did.on the freeway in 6th gear you get 40ish MPG.

Those Ford Focuses, more that the Fiestas, are cute little cars with good road manners and those 2.00 L engines are really good engines, peppy, and will last a long time--almost as good as the engine in a Corolla. I also own a 2014 focus trim is titanium. This car has shudder since new. I called ford about it once I had enough. No sooner than I call that weekend my tcm goes out. They get me in for tcm replacement and everything is fine for the first 2 days. Then driving one the third day it shudders and slips so bad it's like someone dropped and anchor off the back. Waiting to hear bake from ford again to see what the repair or dang will be this time. It is a shame that ford tells people it's ok to keep driving the car and they become unsafe to be driven on the road. If I was not in the country road I would have been in trouble. And as the tech stated in the video ford is dragging their feet on realising new parts that may help. But I must disagree with not driving the car softly we bought this for fuel savings not to drive it hard firm pedal driving lowers fuel efficiency and overall range. This may sound like a rant to some but I has a former ford master tech and know how the adaptive shift strategy works. Ford is trying to bandaid a major problem. This cars tcm 10 year 150k extended Warranty. Clutch for shudder 125k warranty. Come on this is a but much ford. My humble option they need to pull this transmission and replace it with something better shifting for all ranges of drivers.

Thanks for the video. Out of curiosity, Does this fix also works for the DSG 7-speed transmission since they are almost identical except the name. I am having issues when i'm slowly coming to a stop in 2nd gear, like 5mph and lift off the gas pedal then press it and accelerate again causing the judder.

+RabeaNaa Naamneh It just means the inferred transmission temp is too hot due to slippage.

Hi there , I had never seen any Ford's reported of such a problem yet , and after goi g through very carefully finding no reported problems with 2015 Ford focus , I bought one . Aparantly its a focus manufactured in Germany, I get the sounds of what I would get in a VW GTI because of its Dual clutch , so when I m driving without the radio when the cabin is silent I am getting the noise of gear shifts at slow speed where is I try to alter the driving based on what you had explained making me conscious to my driving style. where as when I turn up the radio volume and when I don't hear a think it's drives a dream, it an awsome car truely can you help me out , or advise if the problems are fixed in 2015. Well I have a 3 years 60k bumper to bumper warrant and extended warranty on drive terrian for 200k / 5 years on power terrains ( does it mean the gear box too) Appriciated your reply .

Hi there. We have a 2010 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI Powershift. We had the gearbox reconditioned in June 2017. The car would throw up "Transmission Malfunction", but the guy who did the gearbox said to do a master reset. Sometimes the car would rev up by itself. Anyway, it was driving alright generally, no problems for a while, apart from the odd warning. The battery died a few weeks ago, we pushed the car once, and we changed the battery and alternator. Since then, reverse has been very intermittent. Now it's mostly not engaging. We've been told it's the clutch burning out and depositing junk on the magnets. Any advice please? Thanks.

On buying a used Ford Focus or Fiesta, how can you tell if it is this PowerShift dual clutch transmission? I read that they were also put out with a regular auto trans. I like Focus's and Fiesta's but want the regular auto trans with torque converter if it is also used. How would you know difference of if it were a regular auto trans or the PowerShift? Is there an emblem or does it state it somewhere on the vehicle?

It really needs to be repeated that you need to do this fairly often, otherwise the shudder comes back. The whole point of this transmission was fuel economy. Driving like an ass kills that economy, but it's the only solution if you want avoid mechanical issues.

I’m needing advise on my 2016 Focus 1.0 ecoboost. Hesitates and surges on acceleration. Also takes “forever “ to change gears in the 6spd auto in manual mode. Are the performance parameters in the engine and transmission adjustable in their respective computers? 41,000 mi. Covered by warranty?
