I agree. My husband is a carpenter. He builds houses, garages, decks….. he can build and side just about anything. We have been married almost 25 years and I can honestly say: I couldn’t tell you the difference between a 2 x 4 and a 2 x 6. I don’t know anything about J channel or soffit, couldn’t tell you the difference between a hip roof and a gable and don’t even ask me about the gazillion different kinds of nails!!! lol My point is… Just because we are married to a man that is very good in his trade doesn’t mean we know what the hell he’s doing at work!

She married the man at 18, practically a child herself. They grew up together. He was all she knew. I always thought she was treated a bit harshly for not immediately cutting ties with him. It wasn’t as simple as it seemed. Odd story about the attempted suicide though. Rather than writing their sons letters of apology or love they just sent them a bag of jewels in the mail with no explanation. Shows the role that material things played in their lives.

I too was ruined and robbed of hundreds of thousands of dollars by my husband, who I trusted. I had no idea what a thief he was until after I divorced him, and had to dispose of property he'd stolen while we were married. Who I really feel bad for are Andrew and Mark. Andrew was a man of true integrity for holding his dad accountable and my heart breaks for his fiance. He even left over 5 million to his estranged wife... in my eyes, that shows that this man really was a beautiful soul. Possibly the only good thing Bernie did was having a son with as much integrity as Andrew (and Mark)

I don't feel that Mark or Andrew should have had to pay anything back or sell any possessions, I do feel that their mom should have had to forfeit everything that was acquired during the marriage. Clothes, furniture, houses, jewelry, cars, antiques, china, art, etc., basically anything that could be used to give the victims some bit of restitution. The high life this family lived, was paid for by all of the families that were swindled out of their money. Even if she didn't know, she certainly benefited from her husband's crimes. She certainly didn't deserve to keep ANY of that $10 million. Legal fees be damned. Refute all of your worldly possessions, give back the money you were trying to hide and you can have a public defender. Madoff stole from people and then used their money to pay for his legal defense when charged with the crimes he was more than guilty of. Talk about slapping your victims in the face with your entitlement.

Mark and Andrew are dead but I feel their estates should pay back. Proceeds of crime are exactly that.

@@luisdeleon9819 As memory serves, they were not at all a part of their fathers "organization". They had a wholly separate business, is that not correct? Why would they be responsible for their fathers crime? Or rather their estates? Everything, materially speaking, that came from their father, I can agree to. The jewelry passed down, etc., could go towards restitution. But not their personal wealth. That's like finding out someone was a serial killer after they died, and locking their grandchildren up-just so somebody pays for the crimes.

The money that the sons had belonged to all the victims so the money must be given back. I don’t care if the sons had to sleep in park bench. How do you execute 1000s of transactions a day and not suspect that they were fake? I’m not buying anything this son says. I can understand that the wife may not be aware.

I guess it de[ends what you call "doing very well for herself"...... as a mother I dont think she has done very well at all plus from what I can gather she is shunned by many folk and is now a widow. Some may think that having a load of cash is a worthy replacement, but not me and not lots of other folks I suspect. None of this reflects my opinion of her husband.

I'm not sure the majority of people know people who've gone to prison in middle class or upper class America. It isn't common in middle class or above. I was in my 30s before I knew of someone. Out of a population of US 333,0000 million, 5 million kids have had a parent in prison. That gives you an idea it isn't as common. Some communities u fortunately have more issues with inequality or lawlessness.

I think I understand her. She might think a jail would be violent and scary like in the gangster movie. Her old age husband could die in that kind of jail. And Bernie was still in a house arrest after being bailed out.

I 100% believe that his wife and the 2 sons didn’t have a clue. The sons were not allowed in Madoff top investors. He took their innocence and both boys death lies in his hands.
