The speed and power is just mind blowing! The other waves that form inside the break water are incredible. Prayers go out to all those that are still suffering and recovering from this catastrophic event!
Every time I see this video I always find myself cheering for the two captains as they turn their boats to meet the waves, very brave, in the months to follow those boats would be invaluable to those poor people. Such a terrible tragedy and loss of life.

Me too. They treated them like they would large waves and got more than they bargained for, but still very brave and at least one survived we can see.

It reminded me this scene)): "Mega Tsunami (scenes from the film San Andreas 2015)"

They almost ran out of horsepower! It was the only choice they had, stay in open water!

Wasn't it better to go another way and try to reach the high place on foot? Probably not...but still.

This video really conveys the height of those waves

Yea, you see that crest. Especially at the end. Poor souls that day.
They saw it coming and knew their only chance was to make for the open water. Only chance. The skipper in the larger boat was at full throttle to get out of the inner harbour. Well done to both.
Those are some gutsy captains, hope they all survived. Much respect.

Looks like the little boat made it but the larger one - the one that went sideways then started smoking - not so sure. Didn’t see him after he crested that wave.

After translating some comments on here, it seems they survived.

@@clappedoutmotor They did. The captain was on TV here talking about his experience.
I came here again after 2024.1.1 Ishikawa earthquakes, watching live TV news then many ships hurrying to the ocean left their harbor right after 16:10 to avoid Tsunami waves. Brave fisher men. The best and first is to safe your own life but in such situation, the important thing is face & go straight to the waves, as these men crying so far? But the waves may pull and push from numerous direction if you're in near the coast...
