The Men's College 8k at the 2011 Wisconsin Invite that saw the home team, Wisconsin Badgers, dominate the field with 66 points to BYU's 120 and Stanford's 125. Arizona's Lawi Lalang took home the individual title while Ryan Hill of NC State came out on top in an exciting battle for second with NAU's Diego Estrada. Freshman phenom, Lukas Verzbizas of the University of Oregon, makes his collegiate racing debut. Verzbicas faded in the second half of the race as Craig Lutz from Texas was the top freshman in 15th.

Lukas left his full ride to Oregon to train with his father for the Olympics. Something there must have really set him off for him to leave such a great program. Plus he actually had competition unlike his highschool races

Wisconsin is a perfect example of winning with depth opposed to front runners. Crazy grouping

i was active in college cross-country in the mid-00s. UNC and Texas A &M had no teams at all back then. I remember UNC was almost like a DIII team

I think any runner understands that they're not going to be on top from the start. I dont think it was arrogance, but he probably had to figure out what he really wanted to do.

Lukas bailed on Oregon during the season! I know he wants to focus on the Triathlon, but things must have been going really bad to bail mid season on your team.

@boothy296 Most are standard college age, so 18-22. Some are probably older because the NCAA uses years of eligibility, and not age, for competition.

@Tips4Running No, his dad took over an olympic training center that would focus on tri's instead of just running. Get the story straight.

Wait that doesn't make sense. It seems pretty lowly regulated in running considering Lagat, Manzano both have dual citizenship and they get to run for US and Lopez Lomong is also Sudanese I could see him wanting to do a sport because they had stricter regulations against foreigners
@lilduck99
@lilduck99 11 жыл бұрын
....This isn't a debate. He loves tri's. Tri's make it easier for him to represent the USA in the Olympics than running would because he was not born here. So Lukas is training for tri's. I don't get why this doesn't make sense to you? Are you really interested or are you just trying to argue?

Lukas is a better triathlete IMO. A better career move as well, bigger events ,more sponsor money.

Lukas is one of top young triathletes in the world. He likely realized that in order to compete at the highest level of college running, he'd have to lose his strengths at cycling and swimming. Many of these runners will never be professional. He will. There are great athletes who have quit baseball to go pro at football or basketball...vice versa. Lukas will be a force in whatever sport he dedicates himself to. I suppose he just decided he wasn't willing to be only a runner.

No, he wants to represent USA in the Olympics. With running, there are a lot of barriers to athletes not born here in the United States. With Triathlons, less regulation exists.

Hes young, he's going to make choices that are questionable. Probably felt bad that he wasn't at the same level as the top guys. He can't expect to be, the 8k is completely different from any race he has probably ran. We'll probably see his best in a few years.
