France is truly blessed to have that instrument in that setting, played by these artists. There may be larger classical instruments, but this is the best of the big ones.

On October 25 2015 I had the privilege of attending a joint recital of M Roth and Mme Choplin at St. Sulpice honoring his 30th anniversary as organist there. They played several works for two organs - using also the choir organ. I sat near the high altar and was surrounded by glorious sounds! Unfortunately the grand organ is again in need of some restoration work and there were tuning problems.

Very true. And no offence to Wanamaker or anything but I would rather play on St. Sulpice or Ouen anyday of the week. And you are right huge organs aren't all about power. Cavaille Colls are a perfect example. St. Sulpice and Ouen I believe are the greatest organs ever built. They create just sounds I couldn't even imagine coming from a pipe organ.

One can hear the friendship Cavaille-Coll had with Henry Willis in the passage featuring the Recit strings; the strings are more English than French, IMHO.
@praestant8
@praestant8 8 жыл бұрын
+casavantlover Being contemporaries (Cavaille-Coll starting before Willis) there was certainly a collegial relationship. WIllis adopted many Cavaille-Coll ideas - narrow scale slotted strings, harmonic flutes, etc. Things that in those times were new to Great Brittan. Strings from the period just before and during the early Willis years, as done by those like Bernard Smith, were quite gentle and soft. Willis saw some useful things which he then adapted and applied in his career.

I'd say Ouen because first off Ouen is 2 times smaller and has the same amount if not more power. And Ouen has a sound that gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. But thats my opinion that Ouen is better.

A larger organ is not necessarily louder. A larger organ often means that there is more choice of stops, and/or more different levels of amplitude, enabling for more dynamics.

S.Ouen is about 2/3rds the size of S.Sulpice - 64 stops to 102 IIRC. They both have distinct characters, but a huge organ isn't all about power. Look at the huge Wanamaker organ, with 462 ranks - it could easily get the power it has from 100 ranks. The rest are there for more (and more layered) soft effects, orchestral colour and a seamless crescendo. S.Sulpice could be regarded as a larger version of S.Ouen, but it also has that 21-stop Solo organ as well as the S.Ouen-type Solo "Grand Choeur".
@TheMysticalOrgan

Hmm, those Royal Trumpets are a bit coarse! The spun brass Trompette Militaire (which, as a design, came to Henry Willis III from Gottfried via Wurlitzer, Senator Emerson Richards and the Atlantic City Convention Hall) up in the dome, combined with the 16/8/4 Dome Tubas, now THAT certainly induces goosebumps... but it's the Solo strings, orchestral reeds and Harmonic Flutes which pretty much define that organ for me.

I dare say - the Wanamaker organ isn't ideal for French music, though designed by Charles Courboin and Marcel Dupré. Of course, it was on that organ that MD improvised his Symphonie-Passion. S.Sulpice & S.Ouen are unbeatable for French repertoire, but I urge you to look not only at Cavaillé-Coll but also at Puget. For Reger or Howells I'd prefer a Walcker or Walker: horses for courses! There is no "greatest organ in the world". St Paul's Cathedral is closest IMO - fabulous in so much repertoire.

For a start, S.Sulpice's organ is twice the size of S.Etienne! S.Etienne is wonderful of its type, the large three-manual as written for by Franck, Tournemire, Langlais, Guilmant, Messiaen and so on, but I think that for big works by Vierne and Dupré, S.Sulpice has the edge by simple virtue of its greater size, 32p Contre Bombarde etc. I think Caen has an acoustical warmth which is absent in the clinical Baroque cavern of S.Sulpice - but that may be my dislike of Classical architecture showing.

@johannesbusch8161

Echt jetzt? Entschuldigen Sie meinen Spott. Bitte nochmal ansehen.
