Audi has been setting sales records for the past few years. With classic style, refined interior and quattro all-wheel drive, it appears the new 2012 A6 will help to continue the trend. Tom Voelk checks out a Premium Plus 3.0 model.

6 years later and owning the 2012 A6 3.0T was one of the best choices I made. At 140k miles it’s been very solid, with only one major failed component (alternator at 110k). Thanks for helping me make the right choice Tom!

Honey Love good job, it’ll save you tons of money. I personally don’t believe people that aren’t mechanics or know at least the basics, should own a German car. They can be great cars (except Benz) but the owner needs to know what they’re dealing with and do constant maintenance checks

It is hard to find manual used cars especially on luxury models like BMW, Infiniti, Audi, etc. I love Europe for having almost only manual transmissions

Believe it or not some people favor comfort over sporty handling. Skinny tires aren't very comfortable as you can feel the bumps more and it is more easy to damage the rims in potholes- of which there are plenty where I live.

There are no gearboxes better than the ZF 8HP with BMW's programming. Better as far as suspension goes is subjective. Audi's suspension is better at controlling pitch and roll sensitivity and has higher bump sensitivity. BMW's stuff is better at everything else that doesn't involve wafting. I own a 2011 550i M Sport and although it has many things I don't like, it drives like a car I do love.

you should buy the a6 if you are looking for a a bit better performance. if you step on the accelarator in the 5 series theres a big gap in the throttle response both cars are great but, the audi is a more powerful. And I think the interior is better.

@FarnorthNS11 actually it differs. Acceleration in RWD is better a lot but handling is better in FWD. Audi Quattro combine both of this archiving best handling on any type of road whether its snow, dirt, sand or asphalt. audi didn't keep developing for 20 year in vein + BMW & Mercedes 4 wheel drive systems is nothing beside quattro.

@DrivenCarReviews well the BMW 5-series at least OFFER it. Even the 400hp 550i (twin-turbo v8) is offered with a 6-speed stick (with steptronic as an option)! Manual doesn't mean it has to be a track car.. it's just cheaper and usually more reliable but most of all : more fun I'm eager to see the new S6, what engine will it have since the S4 already has the 3.0t? Probably a v8 if you ask me..

@DarrenPersad
@DarrenPersad 5 жыл бұрын
Exceptionally well, as most non 2.0T Audi’s are. Not to take anything away from the 2.0 TFSI and TSI, they’re good enough engines, but they just aren’t as durable as the 1.8 and 1.4 I4s, or the V6s and V8s. This 3.0T-based vehicle will be far above average for German reliability. And I do think it’s telling that I recently sold my trusted C5 A6, which has driven well for 18 years and no significant problems. Just shy of 120,000 miles on the 2.8L 30V V6, with Quattro, and the 5-speed automatic. Significant service was limited to one CV axle that needed work, one rear wheel bearing, and two flex pipes on the exhaust. These have been holding up just as well. Admittedly the electronics are something I’d look out for in the future, but mechanically they’re quite solid. The Supercharged and N/A engines really help reliability as well, as few Turbocharged German cars are very reliable.

@@DarrenPersad do you think this is a good first car?
@DarrenPersad
@DarrenPersad 5 жыл бұрын
Within reason, yes. I don’t know your age, or who you are, so it would be difficult to give a difinitive answer. If you’re a working individual with a good, sustaining job, then yes, these can be had for excellent prices nowadays, and maintenance isn’t outrageous for what you get. The value, luxury, performance, and safety propositions are all there. If you’re a student, I’d be weary as maintenance can still cost a fair amount, and without proper money to back them, it’ll fall into disrepair quickly. These cars are reliable, and they can run for a long time, but they require attentive maintenance, and preventative maintenance. Best advice - understand you financial situation, understand your mechanical capabilities or knowledge. If you cannot afford this vehicle twice over, it won’t be advisable to purchase one. If your mechanical knowledge extends to only oil changes and brakes, you may find yourself in over your head. If you’ve got both in check, however, you’ll find these will be an excellent vehicle that will serve you well for a long time. Just do not, absolutely do not get a 2.0T model.

Without accounting for other necessary expenses, I’d still say that’s pushing it. It is your money, and it’s your decision, but I would advise to wait and save. Don’t finance, don’t lease, don’t do anything of the sort. Wait and save until you have enough to purchase the vehicle outright, and then some for maintenance, and make sure you aren’t waiting for lights or maintenance intervals - do things before they need to be done, keep the vehicles washed and cleaned, make sure they’re treated right. Once they are, they’ll treat you right.

Why is the start button over by the passenger?
@Todd.T
@Todd.T 5 жыл бұрын
It's actually easier to press over there than on it's old location which was opposite. The great thing about those interiors is they put the buttons and knobs where your arm and hands relax. When you sit in a chair to relax your arms aren't directly beside your legs, you have them a little more spread out. I just changed my car from the previous design interior where there was a separate start and stop button by your leg. I now see things that didn't seem to be a big deal and some things that were a bit of a design flaw, improved. Things are familiar, but better and I didn't really feel that I had issues...except the shifter. The shifter on the previous generation had a sport mode when you pulled it towards you one more notch beneath "D". Well, that made it difficult to access the drink holder and I would bang my hand on it because it was in the way. The newer one is spring loaded, like when it is in full manual mode. One pull down and it returns to center and puts it in sport mode. Pull down again and it returns to center, back in drive mode. In reality, there is no need to touch it. Pull the "-" paddle on the steering wheel and the car goes full manual. If you stop driving aggressively, it goes back into drive after about 5 seconds by itself.

I never said anything about the 550i, its an amazing car and i've driven one and its very close to the old M5 which i like. But im looking for something different, like the S6. the A6 (In US and Canada) has a CVT gearbox and a rubbish suspension. But the S6 will have the S-tronic gearbox which is a double clutch just like the M5 and you can option the air suspension for it. The comfort setting for the suspension in the M5 is like the sport setting in your 550i.
