Really appreciate the video. I'd like to tackle this myself, but unsure of the process to "drain" or "evacuate" the refrigerant. Any info on that?

@@tlavoie7 This part of the job... You may need to take to a shop to have them recover the refrigerant out before you start the repairs

Our AC went warm in our 2012 Nissan Quest yesterday. I took it to mechanic. They said compressor is bad. They recommend replacing the condenser as well since sometimes the compressor will sling metal shards at the condenser. And they would have to see if the drier is bad when they do the job. If the drier is and they said it will be $1,000 for parts and labor to do all three. I don’t need to spend $1,000 right now. I’m thinking pay them what they’ll charge for the diagnosis (not sure of that amount yet), then buy a compressor, replace it myself and see what happens. Does that sound like a good plan to you? Anything I should look out for? Thanks for the video.

Hey Marthew! I'd recommend you have them recover the refrigerant, then if you like remove the compressor and see if there's any metal pieces in there. Also I'd follow up with thier diag and ask them what exactly failed on the compressor? If it was just the clutch then yes only replace the compressor. It's always definitely good idea to replace the condenser but NOT always needed! Hope that helps!

@@EricsMobileVehicleRepair thanks for the reply. I already got the van and brought it home. Just paid the diagnostic fee. I need to save what I can, so I’m planning to just order the compressor and drier, remove the old ones, don’t have a way to evacuate the refrigerant & save it so I guess just lose it, put new compressor & drier in and then take it to another shop that said they would vacuum & charge the system with refrigerant for $90. I figure that since the compressor faces the side of the vehicle it’s unlikely any metal shards would hit the CK sensor, right? We just had to have the condenser replaced last year, so I figure it should be good to leave in.

It does have the same engine but they're 5 years apart and different looking model quests, so I believe there will be some differences.

Na pretty easy. I'd recommend some 3/8s drive wobble sockets though to make the job a little easier

Do I need to drain the refrigerant? Or can I just take it off and install the new one

Great question! The refrigerant definitely needs to be evacuated. Any local shop can do that for you.

uh yeah, its not an easy job. easy is an old v8 where it sits on top with two bolts. i will never buy another v6 japanese torcher chamber. toyota is ok at least you can work on their cars. if you are going to be doing your own work just by a four cylinder. same horspower. blah blah
