2012 Prius 3rd to 4th Gen Motor Swap How-To

Күн бұрынThough we typically post videos about performance mods on our cars, we thought this would be a helpful video for those who have experienced the dreaded head gasket failure in their Prius V. Ali's parents asked us to swap a newer motor into their Prius and, not only is it possible, it was a relatively easy swap and they have reported significantly improved mileage even compared to before the head gasket failed!

You don't really need to space out the bolts for the EGR to the engine... the bolts holding it to the pipe leading to the intake manifold, and the bolts holding it to the pipe leading to the exhaust manifold are enough. You do need to cut off a little flap of aluminum that is in the way of the EGR, at the front of the engine.... that way there is no need to "modify" the exhaust manifold pipe, and it fits perfectly with the intake manifold. Watch the "Fix That Prius!" channel, because there really is a better/simpler way of doing this. Btw, you waaay overfilled your coolant reservoir. That can affect the pressure of the system.

Great video!. I just cleaned the damned EGR path on my Gen III. It was a two weekend effort, with me constantly groaning that Toyota engineers believed the cooler would remain unclogged for more than 100k miles. I'm very surprised that Toyota preserved the EGR system's basic design in the transition from Gen III to Gen IV.

Cool swap. I have some questions- is the 4th gen better power and mpg? I have a prius C 1.5 L what could I possibly swap in..Any ideas? Are there any sites/Channels to get ideas like this on the regular? Thanks for your time

Thanks for the video. Did a new O2 sensor fix the code? How much did the 4th gen block cost? Also. How far north are you? I’m in the Fairbanks Alaska area and the dealer has recommended against a block heater for the engine as they’ve said that it causes the transmission wires to get melted requiring a full replacement of the CVT. They’ve said an oil pan heater and 12 volt charger for the aux is plenty. I’m wondering if you’ve done any more to winterize the motor or transmission and if you’ve done anything to winterize the NMH battery? It’s been starting fine but that’s the NMH batteries job isn’t it? If so the battery should be overkill and I might not notice a problem until it’s too late.

I’m curious if it really does get better gas mileage. A healthy gen 3 will get around 44mpg. You should do the head gasket on that gen 3 and sell it. It’s super easy.

I’ve read the 4th Gen EGR flows better then 3rd Gen which can cause check engine codes. I wonder if your code for O2 sensor was because of this?

Will the engine modifications pass a smog check visual inspection? Asking from California but I'm curious if anything really would warrant a red flag that would fail a smog check

Everything is stock from gen 4 should not be a problem.

@@priusgame1178 wow that’s awesome. I spoke with a mechanic specialized engine swaps. But he said never did a such upgrade. Buy he said he should be able to do it. I just bought 2019 prius engine with 37k mileage - will be doing it this week. Hope everything goes well.

@@jbek9779 the trick is to focus on the coolant lines and that there's no pinchpoints. He succeeded on 2 cars but they kept overheating because of small coolant line pinch points and air pockets. Be careful driving it on the freeway right away because you need to make sure it's no overheating. Take scan tool with you to monitor temperatures. He says he drives harder and no check engine lights at all.

I'm also replacing my 3rd gen prius engine to 4rth gen. I would like to know what issues you encountered after replacing your engine ? Does the car still running after two years? My mechanic is a bit skeptical about the extra coolant line that you covered

I have a 2012 Toyota Prius V as well I had to change with head gasket everything else in the engine was good the 2012 when the Taurus to have a head gasket problems the manufacture didn't do a good job at that time

Do you have a better view of how you ran the coolant lines. I did the swap but can’t seem to figure out why I’m not getting much heat from my heater core. I made some modifications and increased the heat output but I’m wondering if I have the flow backwards or something through the egr and cat.

@@XTheJenovaProjectX common issue. replaced the heads on my 2010 in January and it STILL threw a rod through the engine so I'm looking at a new engine preferably a 2016.

@@Eveningkiss I would do extensive research before jumping into this. I did the entire swap and it ran but had lots of coolant/high temp issues. Then when I called a Prius specialist shop for help, they said putting the 4th Gen motor in it is not good. It will “run” and “work” but they said in the long run the timing of the 4th Gen motor and the 3rd gen computer will eventually cause issues.

I was thinking of swapping my Prius V 2012 something like this, but, I am looking into converting it into regular gasoline car by transplanting entire organs with Toyota Yaris engine. Will Toyota Corolla engine fit in Toyota Prius V? I am done with this complex hybrid technology. Thank you

Seems to so far! Very little oil consumption compared to the old motor

Is there a way to crank the engine over without starting it? I want to prime the oil pump and get oil flowing upwards before starting her up.

I believe it's only when it's new or rebuilt used engine already has some oil in it but I could be wrong I'm not a mechanic

disable fuel injectors (unplug the electrical connectors) and crank it , or remove the Fuel relay so it wont start up. If you have a scan tool than has bi-directional commands id try to see if it lets you perform a compression test this test usually disables the fuel injectors through the scan tool as well so you never have to disconnect anything other than the scan tool when done !

I follow the steps of another guy for swap 4 gen into 3 gen, but I thing we made a mistake using galvanized pipe for the lower radiator hose. after around 10,000 miles my hot engine light sometimes turns on, what do you use for la lower radiator hose

Do be careful of mixing metals. Look up a galvanic corrosion chart to understand the metal compatability.

You need the Toyota TechStream software to reset the ecu. You can get the cable and software off of Amazon for around $50.

@@jbek9779 it’s a real thing. Folks don’t believe the 4th Gen EGR is different but believe me it is. I’m 3 months into a 4th Gen long block swap into my 3rd Gen with no engine codes. Youu must use 3rd Gen EGR if swapping to 4th Gen engine
