GM has gradually worked to prevent dealers from unlocking used modules, like radios, when using their Techline Connect and SPS2. In this video, I show you a reliable alternative method to VIN UNLOCK an used salvage yard LG Electronics BYOM (Bring Your Own Media) style MyLink radio showing LOCKED on the display for 2013 up thru 2016 as used in the Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Spark, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles.
We will unlock the MyLink radio by using an inexpensive CH341a EEPROM programmer to manually update the VIN stored inside the EEPROM directly. This method does NOT involve any soldering (for the particular radio part numbers I show in this video), hacking, chip destruction, modification, or otherwise damaging of the radio circuit board or its chip(s) and thus preserves 100% of the OEM functionality as originally designed by GM - while still clearing the VIN Theftlock correctly. However, to perform the remedies in this video you need to have access to an EEPROM programmer capable of programming for a SOIC8 24C256 EEPROM.
NOTE: Some other MyLink radio models may have a circuit board design that is incompatible with in-circuit programming, and for these a test clip WILL NOT work. You will have to instead desolder and remove the EEPROM chip if you are having problems reading it in circuit (e.g., getting all 00s). I can only confirm these particular salvage LG manufactured MyLink radios with GM part numbers 95266288, 95365449, and 95518440 will work in-circuit as shown. Also note, you cannot swap radio modules across different GM makes. You cannot, for example swap a Buick MyLink radio into a Chevrolet, as the firmware inside the MyLink radio is brand specific. Also the mounting brackets are brand and model specific as well. So you have to have a radio module programmed for same year, make, and model vehicle to have a successful VIN unlock outcome here.
I illustrate this procedure using a bench top test harness constructed out of a salvage 2015 Chevrolet Sonic Body Control Module (BCM) part 13594765. This video is an exact match for unlocking the MyLink radio on a 2013, 2014, 2015, or 2016 Chevrolet Sonic or Chevrolet Spark (and also several Chevrolet Trax years) originally equipped with the BYOM MyLink radio. This video is NOT going to apply to older vehicle Theftlock style unlock code type radios - check my channels playlist for other model years. I make no claims this videos' approaches are applicable at all if you're working on a MyLink radio newer than model year 2016.
