This week I am driving around in the stunning £53,000 400bhp Audi RS3. It's the top of the three for Audi's 3 range. But, if you've not got the budget for one of these, what about the slightly lesser S3. In the real world, is it much slower? What do you get for your money?
You can now help us in many ways:

I had a 2017 S3, 2015 B.85 S4, and now the RS3. RS3 is every bit as good as S3 as a daily driver, but RS3 steering, handling, engine is leagues better. RS3 is just special. It feels like a super car. The experience is totally different. You won’t imagine how big the difference is until you own both

Thanks for doing this video Jay. I looked at the RS3 earlier in the year and ended up going with a TTRS although I am here in the USA. The engine really is the star of the show although I also greatly enjoy the cockpit/interior of the TT and the extra bit of exclusivity (only 550 made of the 2018 TTRS for the USA). The price for entry is high but the car and its 5 cylinder soundtrack put a smile on my face everyday!

Same as me Sash. I love the RS3 a lot more than the S3, although I do think the S3 is slightly better for city driving with less turbo lagg but the RS3 makes up for that with its engine and sound. The noise just bounces off walls and buildings, I've had the PCW exhaust mod done and its great.
@Harpreet06
@Harpreet06 4 жыл бұрын
Nope, it does use more fuel than the S3 for sure but I've found its not that much more. Maybe 10% more? The problem is you feel like driving faster to hear the engine.
@Harpreet06
@Harpreet06 4 жыл бұрын
It depends what kind of driving you're doing. They're quite similar on the motorway/highway, with the S3 you can easily get over 40mpg (talking UK mpg, I know its calculated differently in some countries) and on the RS3 you can get to 40mpg but you really need to drive economically for that, mostly its in the mid-high 30s. It also does better on fuel with more miles and better tyres, mine came with P Zero tyres but they're shit and even something like Michelin Pilot Sport 4s get better fuel economy. In town/cities you'd be getting mid-high 20s on the S3, sometimes low 30s depending on traffic and how many red lights you get. Same route in the RS3 gets you low-mid 20s and sometimes high 20s. On the same route to work, I'd say on average it was 3-4 MPG worse, so for me it meant I just had to fill up a day sooner than on the S3 lol.

Really enjoyed this comparison this is exactly how people think in the real world. Yes RS3 v AMG and M2, but people cross shop against older cheaper similar cars and spend the difference on holidays, Astons or cigars! Loved it and the long format. Don’t do short videos there’s enough of those out there. Long form nuance is a beautiful thing!

I was going to get an S3 manual but on the forums everyone knows the clutch will start to slip very fast, I think it was after 10-15k miles. So ended up going S tronic S3 then to the RS3 Saloon which I love. The issues people talked about with the S-tronic around town was the old 6 speed one the PFL RS3 had.

I’m lucky that I could afford the RS3 but as somebody who in the last 4 years has changed cars 8 times I just can’t find a good enough reason for selling it after 9 months which for me is a record! I’m obviously near you as I recognise the roads around Earls Colne etc so I’ll keep a look out for that gorgeous Evora👍🏻

Well done Jay. Your best video thus far in my estimation. That is, your personal development as presenter and story-teller absolutely shine through. I do feel that you're knitting a tighter story together as you progress, that you're choosing scenarios that are often tangential to the mainstream yet still related to it, and during those critical moments when we've wandered from where we had perhaps expected to be, the presentation's credibility prevents us from being distracted and we feel ready to take plunge into someone else's ideas, and get hooked by the developing talents, and intellectual and experiential databases of the presenter. Dont be shy of returning to cars as time passes. I think perhaps politics may have convinced many of us that changing one's mind in public is some sort of sign of weakness when in fact the opposite is by far more helpful and a truer picture of humans as works in constant progress. In fact I would urge yourself and all youtubers to consider waging war against the "flip-floppers are weak" sentiment, and to present 'criticism' itself as a craft of its own shaped by old and new thesis', bodies of work by past masters and some basic, established principles.

Really good video, thanks. I have had S3 8V and pre-faceift RS3 8V. I found the mag ride on RS3 in comfort softer than standard S3 suspension. Worth noting brakes and tyres cost MUCH more on RS3 and don't last too long. Just a point of correction at 18:37 - RS3 does not have a Soundaktor - its all real noise, mostly from the exhaust rather than the engine. My best suggestion now would be a 2-3 year old pfl RS3 - £30-35K typically.
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 5 жыл бұрын
You sure the RS does not have a Soundaktor? You can turn the noise up or down and it doesn't seem to be coming from the exhaust much
@clivebaker1760
@clivebaker1760 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely sure. This is for the sport exhaust (which I should have mentioned, sorry). When you set the exhaust noise: comfort - exhaust valves closed; auto - closed in g/box D or open in g/box S or M; dynamic - open. Its the valves that make the sound different. There are also some variation as a function of RPM ( I think to pass the old type approval drive by noise limits). Latest RS3 is in general quieter as well (oh dear!). Your example may have standard exhaust.
@JayEmmOnCars
@JayEmmOnCars 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it had the sports exhaust. That's interesting and surprising to know as the thing is ridiculously quiet with the windows down. It's the same as the S3 which made me think it had one
@mred9161
@mred9161 3 жыл бұрын
@@JayEmmOnCars late reply on an old video but yes I owned a Prefl RS3 8V with the dynamic pack (sports exhaust and magride) and the above is correct, the option controls the valves in the exhaust, which open on dynamic mode. I agree with you the exhaust is quiet in the cabin, which is a shame as the buffeting wind noise you get on motorways or fast roads with the sunroof partially open or windows cracked is unforgivable in a £50k+ premium car. One real annoyance for me was that every time you start it in the morning it closes the exhaust valves by default and you have to cycle the modes to change to make them open again. I actually wish manufacturers would remember your favourite setting rather than resetting to noddy mode every time! 3 other things that would be worthy of note for prospective buyers compared to my old C63 were: 1. The traction control is way too intrusive, I just set mine to sport every time I started the car to stop it cutting power in even just very mildly damp conditions where the car was fully capable of putting down its power. Actually quite dangerous in some scenarios. 2. The Pirelli P Zeros the car runs perform poorly when pressing on - I had the back end stepping out and the front end washing out in dry conditions - and the Audis run extremely aggressive front camber so the inner shoulders wear early. Switched to PS4S and it transformed the handling of the car to an extent where it actually frightened me how quickly it would take corners! 3. The brakes - the standard pads are woeful and if you map the car just aren’t up to the job. The combo of the one directional discs plus poor pad compounds on the Prefl meant they squeaked horrifically to the point of embarrassment in stop start commuting. This was fixed by a set of 2 piece Reyland discs and uprated aftermarket pads - at which point the awful screaming noise disappeared - despite an Audi dealer telling me the noise was coming from the rear brakes 🙄

Jay, I own both the RS3 and an Evora S. As you know the Lotus handles unimaginably well. Well when I started driving the RS3 it took me awhile to figure it out. Oddly enough it likes a driving style that is totally contrary to normal. People that think all Audis understeer don’t know how to drive them how they need to be driven. You cant drive an RS3 like a 911. Its actually the opposite of a 911, motor way out front instead of way out back. So if you go into a corner with the RS3 and think that by lifting off the throttle it will tuck in you’re wrong. The RS3 needs a little throttle to keep the weight off of the front and it will steer neutral. Slightly before apex you can lift off and it will tuck in or you can give it the beans and it will power oversteer. Go back and try it...its a hoot. Oh..and make sure and hit ESC button once to put it into sport.

Interesting to watch, i cant beleive 3 door has gone from the a3 line up, imo hot hatches look best with 3 doors. Would be interesting to see how theyve tried to make it understeer a little less. Not sure why they cant use a torsen diff. hmm. I guess the avg audi owner isnt after the drive from the rear - i still think the haldex stintst the quattro a3 bodies with out the drive from the rear. But thats just my opinion. I had a TTS and it dissapointed the hell out of me. Good video.. Id go S3 and vantage :).

quick comment on the "100% of power to the rear wheels" claim. Audi is actually playing a bit of a mind-game here. With this haldex setup, power is always connected to the front wheels, and up to the haldex clutch sitting in back. Now if needed the haldex clutch can close, thus giving the rear wheels the same torque as the front wheels. Easy to see the system can therefore distribute between 0 and 50% of the power to the back. However, in a theoretical scenario where the front wheels are up in the air, or on ice, while the rear wheels have 100% grip, indeed 100% of effective torque would be applied through the rear wheels. But that's not the same as "sending all power to the rear wheels".

As someone that lives/thinks real world the RS3 is my dream car.. and not necessarily a new one. After deciding to sell my 2004 A3 3.2 V6 with 63,000 miles on the clock and a car that I still loved to get into every time, even after 12 years but I knew I would need to spend at least 20k to equal what it had under the bonnet. So, I was so close to getting a 2012 RS3, until the garage sold it from under me, a good omen I now think when I look at the 24k price tag, fuel economy, road tax, insurance. At that point I came across a 2014 S3 that stood out from at least 50 other S3s.. as a guy that loves fast Audis but hates the reputation that hangs over S3's and their drivers it would take a certain look to catch my eye. This was the one.. Estoril Blue, panoramic sun roof, Super Sport seats, mint condition inside, never thrashed. And at 18k I was so glad to have downsized my thoughts.. just like the 3.2 this is a weekend car for me when I look forward to taking it out onto the open road (Scottish Highlands) So yes, just like in the review I'd agree I miss the sound that the RS3 gives and I reminisce about the noise my V6 made, I also miss the power in lower gears in that car where it was always there when I needed it but, the S3.. my S3 has everything else that I want in a car.. in the real world. Very happy with my choice, even though a passing RS3 always turns my head!

Are you sure you're not my dad? Lol, he has a 54 plate A3 3.2 V6 with about 70k miles and is looking at an RS3 because it's his dream car... The S3 had me at gearbox. I know the RS3 is quicker, but quicker doesn't mean a lot to me since I wouldn't notice the slower fractions of seconds. Stirring my own gears on the other hand ... I enjoy every time I jump in a car. Maybe I'd do a light tune for the S3 to squeeze out a few more horses.

RS is only bad around town if u have it in sport mode in traffic, it jolts the car a little bit cause its tricking itself to wanna stay at that rev point and when u put on the brake its like jk and downshifts harshly to maintain those revs... Which is that split second jolt u get in sport mode Those seats arent for weight reduction, its so audi doesnt go overboard on the price...automatic memory seats cost about $2k EACH fully assembled, so thats $4k to the build price that theyd charge u $6-7k more for on MSRP, whichd turn people off of it...its also why they put on all season tires instead of performance ones (but its at least an option) And the true quattro system would need a longitudenal engine setup, meaning 6+ cylinders, so the drive shaft to the back wheels can connect more directly to the transmission vs some kinda transfer box...at most id say about 70-80% on the backwheels for the RS

To the Audi S3 is it worth the money if you have it then yeah as long as it’s not Det and cash when buying but if you don’t have the money then keep the Audi S3 and take your family on holiday or do your house up or send your kid to a better school lol 😂 it’s down to how much you earn in the real world.

Maybe it is because I have a Golf R, but I prefer the interior and discovery system to that in the Audi. Of course the RS3 has a grown up engine and a grown up price to go with it.

I think those English cars you compared these to at the end would break down all the time while the Audi would be reliable, practical and attract less unwanted attention. Add a tune and rear sway bar upgrades to the S3 and it'd also be much faster than them too.

Love the look of a lotus evora 400 but if cash is little bit of a problem you gotta love the rs3 2018, just a tune and 470hp wow, bommer that engine is not in the lotus evora, lots of power, aluminium engine, that engine would put the evora rigth in the supercar leage!

The RS3 doesn't make sense when justifying the cost differential vs performance over the S3. BUT! The RS3 has that offbeat 5 cylinder that is literal fire breathing music...and is the most exotic sounding hatchback in the world, it literally sounds like a baby V10 at full revs. Ultimately it doesnt make sense to compare the RS3 to the S3 depsite it being almost identical aesthetically. You need to compare it to the A45 or M2, which is what its priced/benched against, and it that price landscape....its a performance bargain. From a 8V S3 owner.

A hot hatch ceases to be relevant to me when they step over the 30 - 35k mark. For me, a bloke in his early 40's who grew up with Mk 1/2 Golf GTi's and 205 GTi's, and a bit later the Evo's and the STi's, the great thing about these cars was not just their performance and fun factor, but also their relative affordability. Can I afford an RS3? Yes. Can I justify the purchase of one? No, and for many, many reasons. Not least the fact that it is a small car and so represents little in terms of value for money on that respect., but also I already have my 'fun' car that in terms of real world performance sits somewhere between the current S3 and RS3 but with more interesting looks, heritage and banter potential. If I need more performance and fun I'll upgrade the bike.

I agree with you, I could never justify that kind of money for that car, James has done reviews on my cars, I have the S8 and although used cost 20k less than this just over 2 years old, its 100 times what this car can ever be, (new its mental money heading towards 100K) the RS3 appeals to its market well and that's it, 53k is a joke in my opinion, and it lacks features an RS3 or any car at 53k should have, id feel short changed.

A question about the S-Tronic box; is there a setting somewhere that cancels out the 'automatic' and basically makes it (an almost) manual where you use only the paddles (or gear stick). I'm thinking like the 'race' mode on my Trophy. OK, so this may mean that the car auto down changes, but for up changes no auto? Ahh OK, I wrote this before you talked about switching it into 'manual', does this make it a full manual?
@keithwood4031
@keithwood4031 5 жыл бұрын
Another thought; maybe you should have a discussion sometime about paddles on the steering wheel or steering column? Having driven both I'm a steering column man as I like to know exactly where they are and not have to spend a little time thinking about where they are when throwing it around corners.

Well it’s all to do with power to weight ratio.The S3 is nearly the same 0-60mph as the RS3.They are both great cars and can’t really compare them.BHP means nothing.For example my 2009 TTs DSG has a stage one REVO 332bhp map and a RamAir induction kit,it has the same 0-60mph time as both these cars.The secret is power to weigh ratio.Mine is 1.350KG. It can do 0-60mph in 4.1secs 🤔 End of the day it’s personal choice.One mans rubbish is another Man’s treasures..The reason why things aren’t standard on cars is because the car company’s only think about profit.Greed!
