On this month's Hot Lap, watch at we take a 2013 Boss 302 and give it the ultimate makeover. We install $5,700 worth of performance modifications to make this Mustang a monster on the streets.
First we take this Boss engine to a new level and install a JLT cold air intake, BBK 85 mm throttle body, Kooks 1 & 7/8 long tube headers, Kooks catted H-pipe, and a Magnaflow competition catback exhaust. Finally we top off these mods with a VMP tune.
Next we move along to the suspension and install Steeda sport lowering springs, a Whiteline adjustable pan hard bar, Whiteline control arms, the Driveshaft shop one piece aluminum driveshaft and a BMR safety loop.
After we finish up the install and get out of the garage take a ride in this build that completely leaves Justin at a loss for words.

Hey David- You could definitely go that route but you would need to remove your boss lower rear valance and buy the GT500 rear lower valance in order to fit the quads. The nice thing is its pretty much plug and play for the boss and you won't need to cut anything! Corsa is solid stuff too, you won't be disappointed! -Justin

I have had a lot of sports cars. It’s cute to see how impressed everyone is with the little 5.0 with “loud” exhausts. I have a stock 5.0 so I have no room to say anything. But I once had a 527 cubic inch Cobra (yes 527) with side pipes. Now that was LOUD and deep tone. After that nothing is loud or tough sounding. But it’s gone and I do love my 5.0. And I can take the kids and have heat and ac and can drive it in the rain. So it’s cool. Don’t get me wrong, I love these cars and they are awesome. This Boss is super cool! Thanks for the awesome content.

I'd be really disappointed with those increases after a TB, LTHs, CAI, CompMufflers and tune. That's a lot of money for "huge gains" of 33 hp/27 tq..

I agree with u. But I think it's cause the boss has better flow from the factory than a regular GT. I think u can get close to 420 from these same mods on a 5.0 GT from the same year as far as power mods.

There aren't any cons besides the $700 price tag. You reduce weight and most importantly rotational mass so you'll be moving just a bit faster and rev faster too

Absolutely wrong, have owner many munstangs and have done all these mods and then some. Let me tell you every single one of these mods has a downside. The one peace driveshaft is absolutely trash at low rpms and you will get some chatter from it. As a daily driver i do not recommend. All the harder bushings and control arms they put on reduced the ground clearance and make the day to day pot hole road driving horrible. The cold air intake works well while moving at speed but if you come to a stop it’s in an open box configuration and gets absolutely blasted by the engine heat resulting in intake temperatures over 140 while stationary, the stock box is more of a cold air intake than any of these aftermarket junk. I could go on and on, just remember you are trading something for another thing. Americanmuscle is a company designed to sell stuff so they not going to harp on tue negatives.

Throttle body and CAI will literally add 0HP if not lose some. So basically LTs were the only real power adder

^Uh no. The car will pull more air so you will gain HP with a tune. And 33whp is pretty damn good for just those. Honestly it's just how effienciently the car uses it's power.

5.0s are efficient from the factory, You don't gain too much N/A with bolt ons with that engine. Ford did a great job.

I bought a Boss just like Gary's, with exact same Kooks, and JLT air intake. For some reason, my Boss will not pass emissions, shows three reds as in not ready. I did all the driver intervals specified by Ford, and every other interval suggested by Boss owners, but still will not pass emissions. Any one has an idea what I should do, or what needs to be done to get my Boss inspection ready? Thanks

The Boss 302 was never meant to be a dragster. That's what the Boss 429 was fore. Same with deal with the GT350 was for track, and GT500 was for the strip.

The point of testing a Boss on the drag is to measure the results of power improvements you do. This holds for any car: toyota sienna or a Harley Davidson. It is not like a Demon for sure but still traps at 113-117 mph which is plenty quick.

Those dampers are going to be toast. Twin tube with those springs, this is why Koni has SO many failures of their dampers, people putting extremely aggressive springs on a twin tube damper

The factory Boss adjustable dampers are actually made by Tokico. And I wouldn't necessarily consider the Steeda springs an 'extremely aggressive' spring- in fact far from it. They are one of the least aggressive springs on the site and thats why Gary choose them. Hope this clears things up! -Justin

+AmericanMuscle.com there are people who track their stock Boss dampers that end up being toast in less than a year. Yes they are tokico but still a twin tube. If he doesn't track them maybe they'll last longer but twin tubes don't last. I've know many people have tokico, ford racing, and boss dampers die very soon. Koni is the worst of them all. Vorshlag did a test on numerous Koni dampers and nearly all of them had 1 dead shock. But they leak from the inside so it's hard to tell

hey. I have a boss 302. I'm looking to install a couple of bolt ons. I'm going to need a tune so I was wonder what happens to the track key? I mean the track key is basically a tune and after an after market tune would both keys be the same?

So I asked my local Ford dealer what would happen to my track key if I got an aftermarket tune and they told me that the aftermarket tune would wipe out the track key. It's worth it in my opinion because the track key isn't giving you any more power.

if you have a handheld tuner it will save as the stock tune. I have a boss 302 and it's saved as my stock tune on my handheld.

The Boss comes with 3.73 gearing so I am sure they tested the car in 4th. This car is making around 445 hp plus to the crank.

The dyno pulls were made in 5th gear as its a 1:1 ratio with the MT-82 cars. These runs were done on our Mustang Dyno which can read a little lower than dynojets or other dynos out there. Hope this helps! -Justin

magnaflow is so overpriced and quiet....my weld in flowmaster super 44s with mac off road h pipe on my cobra are louder than his "competition" magnaflow exhaust that costs a lot more, and I don't even have headers. my saleen I had in 08 had magnaflows, and they are quiet. I've yet to hear any set up with magnaflows on it that sounded that good

Exhaust is totally subjective. Some people prefer Flowmaster, some people prefer Magnaflow and some people may prefer something totally different. Doesn't make them wrong or right- as long as you're happy that's all that matters. :) -Justin

@@jrvbamafan1 this dude has cats you do realize that right? The competition system is decent loud. It isnt just about being loud and loud doesn't necessarily mean better. Magnaflows def flow better than flowmaster. Ive owned 7 mustang's and literally everyone of them had 40 series flows on them with offroad pipes but i read in mm&ff back in the day they did an exhaust comparo test same day same dyno borla and magnaflow were the best performing flowmaster was one of the worst. The chambered mufflers dont flow as well as the straight through style. I like borla s types myself.

Making it look like project blackout, i got borla ataks, msd coil packs on my 13 5.0 Bmr suspension, swar rear support brace, lowering springs. Airaid cold air, 85mm bbk throttle, jms pedalmax, steeda g-trac bar, shelby rear shock tower brace, and i bought the amr 20" charcoal wheels with 305 mickey thompson tire on rear. But ive bought most of my mods from AM 👍

what kinda loser does a burn-out in the parking lot of the shop u just brought ur car to smh. idiots like that give us all a black eye.... and as far as hp goes if that was a dynojet the gains would appear to be more but the REAL gains come from a Mustang Dyno.
