The card flicking is originally use to keep other players from identify the card you draw/planning but seasoned players often develop the habit of keep doing so, mostly because they are bored and have nothing to do while waiting the opponents

Actually the shuffling of the hand comes from players who have played against others who have played hymn of tourach. The idea was to constantly be ready to just toss the two random discard cards without having to stall the game.

Yeah, Kibler's shuffle is obnoxious. I'm trying to think of what I would do against him, since it seems wearing ear plugs and the like will effect your ability to communicate game state. Are you really forced to be tortured by the flicking sound of your opponent shuffling his hand or can you ask a judge to have him cut it out?

. they could use a wide angle lense that is also closr to the board, in my opinion. the closest magic will come to being a sport is cue sports, like billiard i would guess. maybe they should cover the magic events more like they coveer other cue sport events ( choosing lenses for the cameras etc ).

there is actually a tactical advantage to shuffling your hand after every single draw. one easy to follow example is top decking a land and putting it directly into play. You've just given your opponent extra information.

If you top deck a land you're really only revealing that you drew a land. I actually prefer to play lands off the top deck even if I already have a land because it doesn't reveal the rest of my hand. It's more so your opponent can't track how long you have been holding onto draws because that can tell them you either have a combo piece or you have something that's too high mana cost

Theres shuffling your hand so opponents don't know whats there, or theres shuffling it over and over noisily and unnecessarily like Kibler does, but you really shouldn't let it affect you. Just because they shuffle their hands a fuckload it doesn't make them any less pro. It's probably a habit thats developed over time.

Whenever I play, shuffling my hand is akin to shuffling my letters when playing scrabble, Sometimes looking at the cards in a different way changes my decision. Kibler does it for nerves, and he is probably the best aggro player in the game, so I am not going to question ihm.

Hand-shuffling seems real annoying when we watch the videos, but you hardly notice it at all in real life. Kibler gunslings at prereleases at my local shop in SD and I was able to play against him once in between rounds with a Standard deck. Not once was I bothered by his shuffling, I was too focused on my own plays and the boardstate to pay attention to it. It's just something to do with your hand, nothing more. Becomes habitual after a while.

My friend and I are both semi-competitive Magic Players. He tries to imitate Kibler and constantly shuffles his hand and he tries to play as quickly as possible. Which is ideal considering he has an aggro deck. The shuffling and quick, sudden movements encourage the opposing player to rush. That's the psychological angle of it. Tactically speaking, it is a great offset, it keeps the other player guessing if the shuffler has a good hand or not. (As Cody below said) The perfect way to combat this, is taking ALL the time you want and then some and to keep the cards in your hand face-down on the table when it's not your turn... And don't forget to smile. ;)

Zachary Trascher To provide an actual answer it mixes up the cards, so they don't know which card you're playing. It could be the card you pulled this turn, or it could be the card you pulled on turn 1. take a control deck for instance. If you don't counter a card that you would have if you could then draw a card and play it you show that you still have no counter. If, however, you shuffle your hand around before playing it they don't know which card you pulled so you might have pulled a counter and then have to play around that assumption.

Players shuffle their cards so their opponent cannot guess their hand. If you keep drawing and playing the cards on the left of your hand (as many players tend to put cards they can't immediately use on the right) then your opponent knows your hand sucks. If you shuffle your hand, they are kept guessing.

Greg Van Gorp the point and what was said when you enter a pro tour or something of the sort, they advise you to shuffle your hand to give take away a small advantage of knowing if you played the card from the top of your library or from 2 turns ago or whatnot, but pros have done it for so long they learn by habit to shuffle fast and often just cuz its soothing or a tiny OCD thing where its like i wont play at my best level if i dont make fan out of my cards haha. i dont shuffle it as fast or as often as them, but i say about 2-4 a turn is good enough
