Mazda's CX-5 is an all new compact crossover, the first to use their complete Skyactiv technology. In a very competitive segment this new crossover has a lot going for it.

One thing I feel you have neglected to mention (as in most reviews I've seen) is Mazada's Blind Spot Monitoring System. The CX-5 is the only CUV in this class that provides this feature and you don't have to go to the high end GT either. It's available in the GS trim level as well and in my opinion one of the most advanced safety features available. I purchased my CX-5 six months ago and love it. The BSM system is something all vehicles should have.

Ok I've driven sports cars since I first got my licence. From a Nissan Skyline to a 190E AMG. I picked one of these up four months ago now and my family thought I was nuts but I love it. It's a very nice driving vehicle. One of the many things I like about it is if you on a GS option package and you want the in dash GPS it's just a slide in module that links to your radio. All be it it's TomTom but it's very nice you can easily add it after the fact.

Thanks for the great review. I'm downsizing from my 2009 F150 King Ranch and I think you've helped with my decision. I had a Mazda 6 wagon previously and I loved it. Too bad they wrecked the 6 and aren't offering Canadians the new 6 in a wagon. The lack of power is my only beef with this vehicle, but I'm sure I can get used to that.

If you are still wondering they both have a really nice grip on the road, the CX-5 is surprisingly well planted even with a ride height of 8.5 in. The CX-5 however is a little pokey with 155hp but makes up for it with mpg's. The Mazda 3 is more balanced with the 2.0 skyactiv.

i'm not a writer at all, but i just went through the car-buying process in the USA and have had a CX-5 for a few months now. At least here in the states, this video is right on. The Mazda is fun to drive, roomy for 5 people on a 16 hour drive, and probably gets the best gas mileage in its class (I get 30 mpg with 80% highway driving). having driven a rouge, crv and a subaru outback, i would take the cx-5 all day every day. its worth 3 more months of payment. :P

As our diesel fuel in Canada is less that regular unleaded I would wait for the diesel. The Yanks unfortunately pay premium prices for their diesel fuel which is a shame as this is why Canadians have a shortage of diesel options. Excellent review Zack as per usual.

I agree, the CX-5 is less expensive then the CR-V and when you go up to the highest trim level GT, the price difference is even higher. As a matter of fact, when you compare the high end CX-5 GT to all others it's the least expensive in it's class.

Both C&D and Motor Trend prefer the CX-5 to the CRV. But this guy is spot on. I'm looking at CUV's and right now and a CX-5 Touring with the Bose and sunroof is $25,479 street 1.9% for 3 years. Honda CRV EX (with sunroof standard) is $23,500 street with .9% financing for 60 mo. And CRV has better reliability ratings than the CX5 per JD Power. There's a premium to pay for zoom zoom. About $2,000+.

I test drove one today. It had a 2.0litre engine that was very smooth and quiet compared to others in the same category and although it wasn't totally gutless, you could tell there might be issues for some people especially if you were fully loaded with passengers and cargo. I liked it anyway. you can't top the fuel mileage savings this offers. What I really want to know is how reliable this SUV is going to be. Only time will tell I guess.

A word about the price, there must be a difference between Honda/Mazda prices in Canada vs. the United States, because all trim levels of the CX-5 are ~$2000 LESS than Honda CR-V, whereas in this review it sounds like the opposite is true in Canada. Just something to consider for US folks watching this review. I think I want a CX-5 in the next few months.

Protege had notorious rust problems. I personally know two former owners with this issue. You may have had different experience though. With the Skyactiv engines Mazda took a gamble: either they hit the jackpot or will go down the drain if their engines will not stand the test of time in reliability. While I like the CX-5 a lot I will not gamble with Mazda.

I would get this or the Mini Countryman over the CR-V any day. My 2012 CR-V has undergone major repairs in just the first 6000 miles thanks to Honda's shoddy quality. The engines may last 300,000 mi, but the rest of the car won't go nearly as long w/o extensive repairs.
