After leaving my family stranded 8 hours from home with a failed alternator and having to be towed back, our 2013 Mercedes GL550 is in my shop and ready for its new voltage regulator to be installed. I didn't originally plan on making this a video but after seeing how cheap and easy this fix was I decided to share the process with you guys. The whole process took less than 2 hours and was done with basic hand tools. It only cost $118 in parts and saved me over a thousand dollars compared to the dealer or and indy shop! like and subscribe for more videos like this!

Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge. when one is in car trouble and does not know how to fix it, it feels like half of your world is breaking. Now I hope to fix this same problem with my Mercedes.

Good luck! We have 195k miles on this mercedes now and it is still very reliable and hasnt left us stranded since this mishap!

I still have it, 184k miles now and no more issues. I will definitely post more on it as it happens though. theres really not much out there on these yet.

Hi very good video I can’t believe 170k miles I have a 2013 gl550 Does yours rattle at start up When engine is warm ? Mine has 67k miles and rattling for like 5 sec at start up after the engine is warm When I cold start it, it starts fine Can you please give me some advice?

sorry I just now saw this comment. That's odd that yours does it when hot. A little rattle is normal for even brand new cars on a cold start. I notice on a cold start in our GL that it does it when cold but would have to pay attention when its hot. Either way I dont believe it is cause for concern, Ive put another 7-8k miles on ours since this video with no more issues!

hi brother my 2015 mercedes gl voltage is 12.6 at idle is that normal !? if not what could be the issue please help

Im not sure what mine is at idle but i would say its more than 12.6. That is still charging technically but barely and also may draw down with a load from the headlights, heated seats, stereo, etc. May be an indication that the voltage regulator is on its way out.

@@CARSTUDIOYT thats exactly what i suspected ( the voltage regulator ) at idle the voltage should be within 13.6v to 14.8v your video helped me alot thank you sir

I just picked up a 2014 GL550 with 88k miles. What kind of problems have you had with your GL since you have a lot of miles now?

Wears out the rear tires every 15k miles (alignment is good), motor mounts, besides that just general maintenance. It has been very reliable.

How did you get the black cap off the b+

Its been a long time since i did this. If i remember correctly there are bolts that hold it on maybe 8mm and then it snaps off

Is it possible to do this from the bottom and not remove the top components?

Its been a year since i filmed this but i did this repair from under the car. There were no major component i removed from the top (if any)

170k miles yet you say it’s reliable Why do most people say stay away from these GL550 There are two types of people They say is not reliable than you have people they say it’s great car. I’m confused

We still have it and it has 184k miles. It was a 1 owner when i bought it with extensive service records (all maintenance items) The voltage regulator failing at 170k miles being the only issue other than general maintenance is pretty reliable to me! We have been looking at new vehicles and cant find a better one to replace this one so a newer GL550 is what we will be buying next.

Hey sup yall, I just have the same issue with my truck, same situation ..I removed the two bolts and the serpentine belt and i still cant get the Alternator to budge.. What did we miss.. i cant seem to find the issue. i drive a 2013 mercedes gl450 it seems really stuck on there like i cant even move it at all. any pointers? @carstudioyt

o0o i got it .. answer to my own question... Nothing a hammer wont fix.... Just tapped it with a hammer and it loosened up Thanks happy modding and fixing
