On the MCU1 the instrument cluster is a standalone computer. On MCU2 it is only a secondary display driven by the MCU. So when upgrading they have to replace the instrument cluster too.

Huge improvement, especially the seats. I just had the exact same upgrades to my 2015 85D here in Australia. It cost AUD$2780 here. Which surprisingly is AUD$400 (2582 NOK, USD$309) less than you were charged. Normally Australian prices are bad. BTW, I also attached some para chord to my adaptor and tied the other end to inside the rear trunk. I've heard of a few reports of people leaving the adaptor in the charger plug by accident. It would be easy to do. Enjoy your new(er) ride Bjorn.

Modern cars cant because fuck the customers, but a few years ago cars used the DIN size standard, which allows you to swap the infotainment if it breaks or you want something newer. The MCU is a bit more complex than most cars though.

@@TheFPSPower There are aftermarket units available for many other cars - I considered buying an Android-based unit for our '09 Mondeo since the Blaupunkt unit it came with was mediocre at best, but it didn't support HVAC controls which I think were integrated in the head unit on our trim level. With a lower trim level and simpler HVAC controls it would have been an easy choice.

I’m considering the MCU upgrade as well. Can someone share their experience regarding stability after the upgrade? Main reason to upgrade for me is that, from time to time, the music app stops working and sometimes the entire MCU seems to crash. The emmc is already replaced, so it seems inherent to the MCU :( I’d be very disappointed if MCU2 were to show the same behavior.

CCS. It’s the EU standard plug and also allows for higher charging speeds than the chademo at a lower cost.

I have both. Chademo adapter is a big huge thing. Also I belive there is a 50kW limit compared to CCS. However Chademo has saved me when CCS on the charger did not work and can act as an extension to reach the charge port in tricky situations (Im in Australia). In summary: Go CCS and perhaps pick up a Chademo adapter 2nd hand on Ebay or something, if you live in a country with poor charging infrastructure (like me).

Wait. MCU 1 doesn’t necessarily means you don’t get LTE. Two different things. I have MCU1 (circa 2018) and it has LTE. The actual bigger issue that I experience with MCU1 is the fact that Tesla used eMMC memory module of only 8Gb which is now subject of recall in some jurisdictions and documented to 100%fail after certain number of read/write cycles. I had a hell of a time getting Tesla to replace the memory module and finally after years and jurisdictions suggesting Tesla to do it, they finally did it. It was a lesson of bad customer service. Another thing, Tesla encouraged upgrade to MCU2 but aside from the cost (several thousand euros), the radio would cease to operate unless you pay another 500€ or so €. Your video is ok from an MCU upgrade point but there are other factors to consider and part of the story on MCUs should be Tesla customer service which has, at least on me, a bad taste on how it was handled. Btw upgrading the eMMC to 64gb as they have done for me solved lots of the speed issues. You don’t get all the functionality of mCU2 but at least you get to use ALL the functionality you paid for which before you couldn’t.

I have talked with several people that could not get the European CCS Retrofit kit to work on their Gen1 onboard charger vehicles. From the wiring diagram it looks possible, but no one seems to be able to get it to work. I am 90% sure that most of the people that get this to work either had already upgraded to the Gen 2 charger or had 2013s that came with a Gen2 during the swap over period.

MCU2 upgrade will remove the analouge radio daughter board completely, but you can buy an additional 500€ digital radio option with dab/FM. If you ask Tesla for an LTE upgrade for MCU1 it might be about 500€ for a stand-alone thing, but if changed when the eMMC recall is done it might be about 150€, since they replace the whole board and reuse the original 3G daughter board.

The "slowness" comes by intention from tesla itself and not from the mcu1 hardware. The v8 browser worked crazy "schnell".... like in times when I purchased my car...
