You're comparing a fully loaded $32k Jetta Hybrid to a basic Prius… Not fair. In any case, having owned a fully loaded 2010 Prius ($31,xxx MSRP), and seriously contemplated buying a Jetta Hybrid SEL Premium, I will say the Jetta Hybrid is much more complete and far more rewarding to drive while delivering very respectable fuel economy.

I almost forgot to mention, the Prius is the most aerodynamic production sedan sold to the public. 0.25 drag coefficient. Toyota did their homework, and then studied even more. They do it right!

***** Agreed. I never understood why reviewers go on and on about plastics on the dash. I don't know about them, but I don't sexually stroke my dashboard at all times. The Prius' dash looks nice and has a nice design. Sure, it's hard plastic, but why does it matter? I don't drive down the road rubbing my dash. I just want the area's that I touch, like the steering wheel, and arm rests to feel nice, which they do. & as for the Prius' gauges being up on the dash and in the center near the base of the windshield, I find that very ergonomic. It's really easy to see at a glance, rather than looking down through your steering wheel and up close.

Drove a Prius and Jetta hybrid back to back and I bought a Jetta TDI. The Prius was awful. Interior was cheap, controls were complicated, seats were uncomfortable and it was painfully slow and boring to drive, but I did average a very good 56mpg during my test drive in mostly city. The Jetta hybrid was great fun, nice interior, more features, and quick. However fuel economy was a bit less at 47mpg. But since I do mostly highway my 2013 TDI gets 62mpg on the highway and 45 in the city if I drive right. If I drive like a hooligan, I can maybe see the 30's in the city.

Choice777 You are definitely not an adult and cannot drive. 10 are you? Maybe. BTW your Prius that would "smoke my Jetta" does 10.1 seconds to 60mph. Car and Driver tested that and tried the best they could in PWR mode. My modded 1.9 with stage 2 chip, turbo back exhaust, AFE cold air and performance injectors does 7.1 seconds to 60. On a bad tank with half city the worst I've ever done was 37mpg. The best was 72.1 on a roadtrip. The steering is numb and the CVT is like a rubberband. The interior screams cheap. My car is proven to be more refined (48dba at 60mph vs 62dba at 60mph for your Prius). Just stop talking child. Your mommy or daddy has a Prius probably and you haven't sat in anything else and think it's the best car on the planet. LOL. Kids these days...

Choice777 Another thing, I like fuel economy as anyone else does but I like power to go along with it. And so many autojournalists include Jettas and Prius' battling it out and 10/10 times the Jetta wins. Do you want links to those comparos? I'll give them to you if you want. Or maybe your too scared. In Hawaii I rented a Prius C. Painfully slow(Even more than a Prius5) but I did like thrashing it in the downtown center and it did hold my luggage all while returning 67mpg in mixed driving(keep in mind I had the pedal to the metal every second I drove it). I did like it and would consider it if the steering had more feedback, interior was more premium and if it had more power. The Prius 5 is great on fuel but everyone has to admit it's slow, boring to drive and ugly. When I test drove a 2013, I only like the fuel economy and the room. I'm not biased. I know what's best for my lifestyle and the Prius "only" got 46mpg on the highway when my TDI can do 20 more. In the city however, it would be a different story.
@brandonfriesen5389

HappyListener50 Maybe the Prius I drove was a lemon or something. All these people are saying it wicked fast. My experience was anything but fast. I was used to a V6 powerplant and when I hopped into the Prius I immediately noticed a lack of power. Fuel economy was very impressive. If I lived in the city, I'd buy a hybrid however I do 90% highway driving and the battery would be useless on my car and since diesels can outdo anything on the highway in fuel economy I opted for a diesel. I got 72mpg on a roadtrip once. That was with a friend and little luggage on a 20c day. I dont hate the Prius it just doesn't suit my needs. My Jetta has direct steering(Prius doesn't) very agile in the corners and eats up highway miles like nothing else.

HappyListener50 Finally someone understands, thank you! I love my TDI. And I hope you enjoy your Prius! Theres nothing wrong with it I guess. I guess it just doesn't appeal to me. A lot of people hate the look of the Prius, does nobody understand it wasn't designed with style in mind?? It's all about the drag coefficients. It's the one shape that gives you the least amount of drag, love it or hate it, it's doing it better than any other car on the planet. I'm a long time VW owner that finally switched to a reliable brand. Love my 4Runner, my Highlander and my Prius, they all serve a purpose and do it without $1000's in repair and maintenance costs.

For something that remains parked in my yard losing money people make a huge deal over these devices. We have made our way one where we are not in the cabin of these devices for more than 30 minutes unless we decide to be. A means to an end WTFC what you drive as long as you are paying attention to the fact that it is very expensive to not pay attention. A prius with a additional 20 gallon tank can take you from Atlantic to Pacific Ocean with one stop for fuel in Dallas Tx. That is monumental.

They could've made the jetta a lot cheaper, simpler, and more reliable with a naturally aspirated engine. Which would make it more worth the cost. I like the idea of turbos, but generally they aren't as reliable, and add cost. Not to mention lag, however little it still exists in todays cars.

I sell cars for a living. It's now April 2020 and when a 2013 Jetta Hybrid goes the the lane at the auction, most dealers run away!! Average winning bid on a 2013 with 65K miles is $2700!! Yes $2700, that's not a typo. Horrible resale value. There is a reason VW doesn't make the Jetta Hybrids anymore. There is also a reason Toyota has sold more Prius's than all other hybrids combined. If you like having a good looking money pit, by all means buy a Jetta Hybrid, or any VW for that matter.

Jetta Hybrid is a real car, Prius is a bunchedup piece of paper with a fly inside. I hate Prius's dash, the chunky center console, the small foot space, the fiberglass body panels and the weak, kill-me-please engine. I'd buy a VW anyday over a Prius. I prefer 170HP over 134HP and no it does not "rip" out of starting line, 10sec isn't quite rip!, all battery-powered machines jump at start at full joystick! even wheelchairs.

The other thing one should factor into this equation, the VW has not been known for reliability. The Prius, on the other hand, is known for being exceptionally reliable. In fact, there is no set bar for when the Toyota hybrid batteries need to be replaced. Search KZfaq, and you will find Prius owners who have over 200,000 miles without ever having the need to change the hybrid batteries. Yes, check the reliability and comfort of hybrids, Toyota always wins!

On paper, yes, but the real issue is the torque curves of electric and diesel lend themselves to gobs of torque in the lower RPM ranges and practically nothing at higher RPMs. Diesel engines lack horsepower at higher RPMs and require a turbo to provide the necessary power to make them practical for road use. Gasoline engines produce more horsepower an lower torque at higher RPMs and compliment the torque curve of an electric motor.

The Prius is no doubt a better hybrid as a hybrid. In my opinion, the best out there and I was fleet manager for a company that used Prii. VW is trying to introduce a brand new idea - a fast, fun, stylish hybrid which is affordable. It is faster, more fun, more stylish, but its hybrid system feel "beta". The Jetta Hybrid system at low speed seems confused when accelerating and decelerating, creating a stuttering effect. The Prius has a better hybrid system but is slow and its style boring.

If you are willing to give up an amount of dependability for some excitement and fun to drive, go VW. Personally, I wouldn't go with the VW. Not that I prefer the Yota, but it goes all the way. If I'm giving up the reliability, I want more fun than this particular VW offers. Maybe a GTI.

***** sorry, didn't know people who were on the higher intellectual scale didn't drive diesels, which is actually safer for environment because of the molecular structure of diesel, unlike the electric waste from the prius. Mainly because diesel comes from the earth, while electricity is also, It has been packed in a box and humanized. While diesel has only been modified slightly. Sorry, Didn't know you could drive a car without the people who have made it better over the years. The "lower" people on the intellectual scale. I would like to see you use the math it takes to build a motor. Much less a hybrid. Stop looking down on people because you have insecurity issues.

I have a Prius, 2012, just like the one shown in this video. And I have to say, I hate it everyday. I curse myself for not done comparison shopping. The steering wheels feels like you are holding a piece of sandpaper (it actually hurts your hand in long journeys). The cheap plastics on the panel and elsewhere, the lack of storage bins, the pathetic Entune system, all contribute to make this car atrocious. Yes, you will save gas, but life is too short to save gas and suffer with everything else.

this car isnt about fuel efficiency. its about having the option to go all electric for a good mile or two, of cruising electric at 30-40-50 for quite a few miles, and also having 130ish horse power with the added torque from the electric engine at basically zero rpm and zero mph. it will push you into the seat like a 200+ hp car.

Choice777 I think you're probably overstating it a little. I drive a Prius, and while it's economical, it ain't fast off the line. It doesn't have any gears though, so while acceleration isn't hard, it is continuous.

Good for you. The Jetta has a life expectancy well over two hundred thousand miles. Has awesome engineering, rugged construction and usquestionable dependability. Thus I choose German. I think the pretense of Green or wanna be environmentalist is as plastic as the posers themselves. Sorry, My Opinion.

Ron Moody man get a clue. its the best selling car used as a taxi in london, uk, it;s got one of the most amazing dashboards money can buy savefor wod and metal trims found on s class and a8 and such. its got sharp clean lines, and its far from slow or dull. that in the mind of wanna be acers, which i have no problem smoking at night while i drive my 2010 prius in london uk.

Just because it's the best selling doesn't mean it's a good car. I would think you would know living in the UK. Haven't you seen Top Gear? The prius isn't fun to drive and has horrible specs, obviously. And in my opinion it's one of the uglier cars on the road. Jetta on the other hand is tried true, with years of r&d under it's belt, and she's handsome to boot.

Well it's the best selling car in California for the past 5 years. It's basically an ever person's car now. I don't dislike the styling, but wish there were more options than the same design.

***** Dude...I wouldn't be caught dead driving a prius. Yeah sure you get 50 mpg, who gives a fuck. I need at least 200 hp in a car to even consider driving it. It is far safer to have a faster car that can get out of the way of accidents quicker.

nxtinventor I bet you have never driven a prius. and if you had, then you wouldn't talk that way. it's an interesting and effective car. I also have a 5.9L Durango, and Convertible Mustang as my other cars, but I commute in a prius and LOVE it. try one, then talk smack. +Brian Lee - turn off caps lock, don't let people get you upset, haha, it makes you look silly.

afdave Gimail I have driven a prius , and it was terrible. Not only is it an eyesore, but the interior plastics were so bad I could almost feel my skin itch from touching it. It had a lot of road noise and wind noise, handled like a nun carrying a mattress, and to top it off could barely keep up with traffic. I will continue to say that the prius is a terrible car for uninformed drivers who care only for the best deal and what the media says. Buy a diesel vw... Or a hybrid vw, or a hybrid ford, ANYTHING is better than a prius. They are that bad.

nxtinventor well, you are certainly convinced. But they still sell more Prius hybrids than any other. Every single year. So more people disagree with you, than agree with you. But it's your opinion. But you offer it like it's factual. VW is also a great option. Congrats.

Apparently, according to them 98HP from the prius "paired with an electric motor that makes 80HP..." "...for a total system output of 134HP". So, 98+80=134. I hope these people are never in charge of calculating salaries.
