General video on how to Install Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness on a 2013 / 2014 Toyota Rav4. The part number is PU322-42013-UW and I purchased the wiring harness from a Toyota dealer because I did not want to hack or cut any wires on a new car. This way the installation was clean and oem looking. One reason I went and paid more for the oem trailer hitch harness was because I have seen some people do hack jobs and lets just say that usually things go out or don't work properly. It does take a little time but I think it took me 2 and a half to 3 hours total and that was taking it easy and making this video. The hitch I actually got was not a Toyota hitch but a Curt Manufacturing Class 3 hitch Part Number 13149 which was stronger that the factory oem hitch. You can download the installation manual by searching on google for part number PU322-42013-UW. I have used this a few times with a small utility trailer and it pulled with no problems. It cant do too much weight but worked great for what I needed. You can probably pull a jetski or snomobile easily with this setup but please check your weight in your manual so you stay legal.
You can click on the affiliate links to purchase this wiring harness on Amazon: amzn.to/2INsWe3 or eBay: ebay.to/2xhKMQZ

Thanks for posting. It was worth watching but I have to say that it seemed like an incredible amount of work compared to just running the wire underneath the car. In the past when I installed the Curt aftermarket wiring harnesses the only problem I had is when the module was mounted underneath the car. Never had a problem with the wire. Thanks again for posting.

Dude, you are a life saver! After over a day of trying to find the firewall this helped me do it. I owe you.

I bought a Curt after market kit. For the power wire, I used a hanger to fish the power line through the firewall as well as the rear quarter panel area. This video was extremely helpful in helping me to figure out a game plan and know what the guts of the car look like. Thanks!

Thanks for making this video. I'm trying to figure out a reasonable way to run a 12V line for an audio amp from the battery through the firewall of a 2011 RAV4. I've seen text descriptions, but no one has a video that shows the process as well as yours does. This is extremely helpful. Thank you!

Thanks for watching. I will say that this was a longer install because I wanted the OEM harness. The funny thing is I installed one on a newer highlander and it was just plug and play in the back. But then again they are 2 different trucks.

Great install video. I think you sealed the deal to just get an aftermarket one and carefully run it underneath though. If I have problems with my lights in the future, I'll start with the harness. I'm afraid I'd break a bunch of those clips and trim pieces.

Thanks Adam, this is insane that Toyota would do this... I think Toyota spends all its brain power on Longevity of their vehicles and NONE on the utility and creature comfort or customization of their product. I do not understand why.

Thanks for doing this video. Pretty straight forward. Just nuts and bolts and you get a complete factory set up. Looks like you might be able to do it without undoing the back seats.

There is no way adding trailer lights should take all this effort and work, taking apart half your vehicle to have trailer lights. I'll find another way!!

I do appreciate the effort to make this video; but a wiring kit (that is clearly meant for the manufacturing assembly line) that needs to take apart that many pieces of a car is just silly, by the time replacing all the covers back in place there will be probably squeaks and rattles. This wiring kit is "design wise" stupid not meant for aftermarket installation.

I have to agree with that being to much work for a trailer wiring install. I'm pretty sure he only needed to do half that work for that install. He did not need to take anything apart in the engine bay, and I'm not really sure about taking out the rear seats.

Sorry to disappoint you folks but if you don't do this and just try splicing a four pole leader into the wires going to the tail lights, it won't work. Further, not only won't your trailer lights work, your car's tail lights will also stop working. Today's automotive wiring harnesses are very sensitive to current demands, which is why you have to run a power lead to the battery. Disbelieve me at your own peril.

You could always tape the wires on top of the roof to avoid tearing up your car. That should save you some time.

Great job on the video and explanation but WOW this is insane! Toyota has completely flubbed on the RAV4 for towing lights. Completely ridiculous. I put a hitch on mine for a bike rake. Wanted to pull a trailer and OMG this is ridiculous! Even the aftermarket kits are a major pain with running a wire to the battery. Nuts. My Subaru had a factory plug behind a rear interior panel to connect the wiring kit. SUPER easy.

yea my thoughts exactly. Since this is my wife's car I decided to install the OEM kit because I have seen people mess up the installation with aftermarket kits and then they're trying to troubleshoot why their lights don't work or something else does not work. The last thing I need is a call from her telling me the lights are out or something is not working. Lastly I did not want to mess with the warranty since we bought it new even though Toyotas are reliable.

They do not think about us. My V6 RAV4 with 270 horses is designed for towing. And I need t disassemble half of the car, because Toyota saved 50 cents to install a harness!

Geeze! The factory adapter for my 2006 Highlander plugged into a connector in the spare tire well and ran to the hitch. I was expecting the same for the Rav4. The higher end aftermarket adapters are nearly identical and cost 1/2 as much. I'm glad I watched this before ordering this kit. Other than the heavy plastic shielding around the wires, and the gray power connector, I don't see any difference other than the Toyota logo. Still tapping into the original light outlets. Still running a wire up to the battery. If you do go with the Toyota part, I'd run the power out a grommet in the back with the gray connector internal to the vehicle and route it along the bottom of the vehicle.As long as their are no exposed junctions, there's no reason to tear apart the Rav just to run the harness along the inside.

I have the same year and model and color Rav4. I too plan on buying the toyota oem wiring harness. Would you recommend the dealership installing it? Also, I was told by the dealership that they do not cut original wires or drill holes. I am not sure if they are being honest or dishonest? I would like to hear your thoughts on this before I decide what I am going to do.
@AdamBedz
@AdamBedz 4 жыл бұрын
I purchased the oem harness because it did not require any wires to be spliced and it was a plug and play install. The hardest part was running the power cable from the front to the rear. The aftermarket kits were cheaper but required splicing because they did not have one made for the rav4 at that time. You can check curt manufacturing to see if they made a kit as they made one for my camry and it did not require splicing. If the dealer installs, I dont think that it should be more than 2 hours if they do a lot of these kits. But each dealership is different and some have crazy prices, that's why i do all my own work. Best of luck.

it's more faster run a wire from battery to rear underneath of body, using a plastic cover, same used to cover brake, gas, evaporator pipes. I did it, and work fine, and no trouble.
