The "family sedan" may not be very exciting, but without midsized sales auto makers would be in a pickle. Ponder this: the five best-selling midsized sedans in America accounted for 1.3 million of the 12.8 million vehicles sold in 2011. With numbers like that, it's important to get your mass-market people mover right. This means competitive fuel economy, a low base price and swipe as much tech from your luxury brand as possible. Either that or just wear a Nissan badge on the front. Say what? The last generation Altima was the second best-selling car despite being long in the tooth and filled with some questionable plastics. This Altima has a tougher task however, it needs to compete with Honda's new Accord and Ford's sexy Fusion which is selling like hot cakes. Can Nissan's traditional value proposition make up the difference? Or does the Altima have something else up its sleeve?
A design that doesn't alienate the customer you expect to return and buy their second or third car is critical. Just ask Ford how that bubble-Taurus redesign went in 1996. Still, midsize sedan shoppers demand some style so Nissan's design team jammed a bit of Maxima, a pinch of Infiniti M and a "whole-lotta" Versa into a sausage press and cut the Altima off at 191.5 inches. This makes the new Altima longer than a Camry, a hair longer than a Maxima and essentially the same size as the Accord and Fusion. Nobody will confuse the Altima with an Aston Martin, nor will they think their neighbor is driving a budget Bentley. Instead the slab-sided Altima delivers clean lines and elegant good looks. Think of it as the Midwestern farm girl to the Fusion's Los Angeles call girl.
Since our tester was the top-of-the-line SL, the cockpit featured a heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel, an 8-way power driver's seat and manually adjustable lumbar support. Shoppers that chose the 3.5L V6 will be treated to a pair of the best looking and best feeling magnesium paddle shifters this side of a BMW M6. Seriously. There's just one problem: paddle shifters on a car with a CVT make as much sense as a parking brake on a french poodle. (Yet for some reason I found myself caressing their magnesium goodness non-stop when I was behind the wheel.) Like the most entries in this segment, the front passenger seat remains manually adjustable regardless of trim level and upholstery. Thanks to Nissan's "Zero Gravity" seat design, the front seats proved comfortable and didn't' aggravate my temperamental knee during a 2 hour road trip. Since manufacturers "march to their own drummer" when measuring legroom, take your family to the dealer and jam them all in the car before making a purchase.
The crash diet and CVT pay dividends at the pump. The Altima 2.5 manages 27/38/31 MPG (City/Highway/Combined) and does so without direct injection, start/stop, batteries or aero packages. What about that V6? Nissan's focus on weight has made the Altima 3.5 lighter than the Accord V6 and Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost by over 200lbs. In our 3.5 SL I averaged an impressive 27.6MPG over a week of mixed driving. This is notably above the 25MPG combined EPA score despite my commute and the 2,200ft mountain pass I cross twice a day. You can thank the light curb weight and CVT for that. The Accord V6 matches the Altima's combined EPA number and the Fusion trumps it by one MPG on paper. In the real world, the Altima beat both by 4MPG.
When the road curves, a light chassis will only get you so far, thankfully Nissan tuned the Altima's suspension to be compliant but surprisingly agile. Adding to the fun-factor, all V6 models are shod with 235/45R18 rubber, notably wider than the V6 Camry's standard 215 or optional 225 tires. The suspension, curb weight and tires combine to give the Altima a slightly higher road holding score than the Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost we got our hands on, but numbers aren't everything. The Fusion's steering may be numb, but it manages more feeling than the Altima and even I have to admit the CVT sucks the fun out of aggressive driving. If that matters to you, drive past the Nissan dealer and pick up a Fusion 2.0T with or without AWD.
Some may call this a cop-out, but in my book the Accord, Fusion and Altima tie for first place in my mind. Here's why: each of this trio plays to a different audience. The Fusion is gorgeous, more dynamic than the Altima but has stumbled with the 1.6L Ecoboost quality issues. The Accord is a traditional choice with a solid reputation and greater visibility thanks to an enormous greenhouse. Meanwhile the new Altima is a stylish elegant sedan with a powerful and seriously efficient V6. If I were dropping my own money on a sedan in this category I would have a hard time choosing between the Altima 3.5 SL and a Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost.

I saw something similar on a long interstate trip in the 2.5L version - just over 40 mpg. Color me impressed. The Altima is more softly sprung than some others in the segment, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Feeling every gravel in the road can get really old after a while.

I'm in the market for a mid sized, too luxury mid sized car. Example from a fully loaded to Optima, or a Cadillac ATS. I've now watched Several of your reviews, which are Quite excellent, in fact in my opinion the best, for my needs on You Tube. The only other thing you could consider adding, are reliability ratings, which for me, will make or break whether I consider the car for purchase. If you're adverse to adding reliability ratings, do you have a site, that actually has numbers that Really reflect some realm of reality, unlike say, Consumer Reports. Thanks again Alex. Another Great review!

I agree that the styling is elegant and ages well, and works for others. Hate the elephant steering wheel but I'm glad they're doing things - different strokes and all that. Have to say it changes our image of you, to hear you're stroking the magnesium paddles...yeek. Suggestion: when you talk about competing vehicles, put links the relevant reviews in the description. Finally, why did you select those three competitors as relevant but leave out Camry, Passat, GM? No worries, just curious.

Great video as usual. Some observations/ questions: The styling, while not bad, makes the car looks a bit chunky and plump. For some reason, the SV trim level (and lower) doesn't offer adjustable rear headrests. Can't figure that one out. Would you say the glossy dash/ console area is susceptible to scratches? Truedelta (and CR for that matter) reported poor reliability for 2013's mainly dealing with electrical and safety feature issues. Has Nissan done anything to address this?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 жыл бұрын
In general the hard plastic dashes are more susceptible to scratches than the soft ones, but gloss vs flat doesn't seem to make too much difference. On the reliability I'm not too surprised, Nissan like many companies does seem to have some trouble in the first year. As I understand it the 2014 models are faring much better.
@michaelscott356
@michaelscott356 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Alex. Not sure what you're referring to when you say "gloss vs flat doesn't seem to make too much difference"....but if you mean the top of the dash...where it meets the windshield, GLOSS IS HORRENDOUS for glare. I once experienced a detailer putting Armorall on my Camry dash and I almost sued him because he ruined the car's (previously) glare-free view.

I seriously think this is the bang for the buck for MPG for the amount of interior and trunk room and quiet tuned interior with out giving up BHP. I like the Infinity honches in the front fenders. And the V6 is still one of the best V6 engines used in most Infinities and the Maxima for about $25K after incentives on the ALTIMA. Thanks ALEX!

Nam3l3ssOn3 Tough call. I'd take the Altima 3.5L over the Mazda. The acceleration and fuel economy are excellent. II would probably buy the Altima 2.5 over the Mazda6 as well because the fuel economy and pricing are strong points for the Nissan. The Mazda does handle better than the Altima 2.5 but the difference isn't all that large.

I have a 2005 Altima, and I'll be honest, the front fascia look 10/10 and 10x nicer than the 2005 model, however Nissan's newer taillight design is a bit less outstanding than the older style used in the 2005 model at least Altima wise. That's just my opinion. That said, that's really my only beef with the newer Altima.

I had the last generation altima. Liked it but the Tire pressure monitoring sensors in the tires kept leaking and weren't repairable. Just a dumb design and required replacement often. One tire had 4 new sensors replaced. Seems that all nissans use a similar design. Costco tire guy says go Toyota or honda.

Bought new 2014 Altima SL and it's still noisy as I had the older 2005 Altima S. Nissan cheapened things: 1. Nissan HATES technology as it uses Outdated designs/features: a. 5" Bose stereo upgrade is Not touchscreen whereas competitor's screen radios ARE touchscreen! - Nissan's own screen radio is Not touchscreen, either! b. Driver's screen only shows car icon (unless tech package option was purchased) and NO digital odometer! c. USB connection does NOT work well... if using iPhones GPS (Google/Apple Maps), radio switches to playlists which user cancels but it also cancels out the Voice Instructions of the GPS! --> Overall: Crappy design/features by Bose/Nissan >:( 2. Noise level is relatively high - Engine drone due to CVT - Tire/road noise --> NOT much insulation when other auto makers models are quieter! 3. Why no adjustable rear headrests? - Nissan just cheapened out when other auto makers include it as Standard! 4. No front passenger seat adjustment for height or tilt, only manual forward/backward and seat back incline/recline! - Still NO seat tile feature on manual seats on other trim models >:( - Nissan really cheapened the seat features! - Seats need to have More bottom cushioning. 5. No daytime running lights when many other car makers include it as standard? Nissan's old "Fun to Drive!" slogan is gone! Now it's all about fuel economy and plushness.

The engine/cvs is Loud upon start up and acceleration and can't take Cold temperatures. The noise is reduced when the car is cruising though. But expect tire noise from the Continental tires that's not so good though it should last almost 3 years with light to heavy commuting time and wear and tear.
