The 6-1, #4 Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to Knoxville, TN to face the 3-4 Tennessee Volunteers. Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin had been head coach at Tennessee in 2009 before unceremoniously departing to take the head coaching position at USC. This made him a hated figure among Volunteer fans, and his new position as the offensive coordinator for their fiercest rival had only magnified their disdain. This was Kiffin's first return trip to Knoxville - the Kiffin Bowl.

People give Saban flack for being an emotionless hard-ass but @ 1:24 , he's applauding after Griff's miss, saying "That's alright, that's alright."

I agree. Everyone knows how he can chew out players, but he can also be forgiving at times. I've never seen him yell at a kicker. He's probably thinking it will only further damage their mental state. Usually, he only gets really furious about mental mistakes and when he perceives a lack of effort. He also seems to direct most of his anger at the defense, since that's his area of expertise. I heard him say in an interview once that in his time at Toledo and Michigan State, he would chew the guys out for almost everything. But he decided that much intensity was counterproductive, and making everybody play tight. He's definitely mellowed during his time at Bama too.

Given Griff's circumstances he came from I can't help but wonder if Saban didn't give him a little slack once Griff showed that *in general* he could hold up. Or maybe he felt a little bad about putting Griff right on the sharp end his very first time out with the 57 yard attempt in the Iron Bowl. Likely we'll never know - Saban is nothing if not inscrutable. Story time: the Gifted Students councilor at my daughter's school is family friends with the Sabans; I found out the first time I visited and saw all the 'Bama stuff on her office door, so whenever I get up to the school we'll wind up talking Crimson Tide. :) Anyhow, she said that he can stand off in the corner of a room during a social outing and look for all the world like he wishes he was anywhere else, *but* per Miss Terry, he's actually having a great time. I think you're right though, he might be mellowing a bit as his career goes on. Hell he might even start smiling more on the sideline if he gets Natty 6 :)
