Dad has an 03 5.9 cummins. He loaned it out to one of his relatives for a day. Dude blew the lower radiator line off and just kept driving it. Brought it back lunch time and parked it. I come out 15 minutes later fire it up and head for town. About half a mile down the road I look down and see the coolant gauge is pegged. Drove it back and parked it. Dad opened the hood and burned his face from the heat waves coming out from underneath. That was 6 years ago and we still use it every day. Not a single problem except we replaced the injectors

I have a 98 12 valve With 600,000 miles! I bought the truck brand new! The parts guy at Cummins did not like Dodge! He told me I don’t need to change the oil as much as recommended! Run a really good synthetic oil With a synthetic oil filter! I went as high as 30,000 miles Between oil changes! I’ve always sent my oil in for analyst and they’ve always said the antiwear properties are great! They also said the soot does not hurt the engine. They told me overheating with the killer! Number one cylinder! I always make a habit every hundred thousand miles to pull the rad have it flushed and cleaned!(A flashing clean the cooling system) I reuse my antifreeze! Two years ago I replace the head,The turbo charger, Put in rebuilt injectors,Rebuilt injection pump from BD Diesel, Replace the main bearings and rod bearings! The bearings were still in great shape! I hope when you had the engine this far apart you lifted it up and replace the bearings? Good work love your videos!

Dönald Trümp You’re half right! But vehicle ordered in 1997 You had the option of a 24 valve or 12 valve? I think they did that for about six months? The 24 valves are generally called 98 1/2🤷‍♂️. So you weren’t 100% wrong! Because I don’t think you could order a 12 valve in 98? When I buy vehicles I always order them the preceding year! I took delivery of mine in September 1997😊. The 12 valve quad cab is the most sought after diesel?(That’s what I’ve been told) People keep trying to buy my truck all the time! It’s a full load every available option? Cheers have a great day😊

98 12v is my favorite year because the back doors open. I have a 99. It is a 24v but still a really good truck with 365,000 miles. My aunt bought it brand new and I've had it 13 years and I drive it 120 miles a day. Very reliable and 0 blow by. I would rather have my old 99 than a new one. In the UK these engines are fitted to heavy(ish) multi axle commercial trucks, not lightweight commercials. Over here they can be running consistently at weights of 18,000kgs + and sometimes up to 23,000 in Tipper/dump trucks. That's between 40000 pounds and 50700 pounds. It's a good engine. We don't have proprietary engines any more though.

I had a brand new 6.7 in 08 (first year) in a repo truck. I put 100k on it in a year. It had carbon buildup issues for the first 20k and the dealer mechanic finally said you need to run it harder to clear it out. The truck was still running with over 500k last I heard 3 years ago.

@@Rat-Builder It was a catch 22 when diesel was over 5$ a gallon back then. I liked to run my truck as economically as possible too. Hauling 3500 lb cars was nothing for that truck and being stuck in so cal traffic jams constantly didn't help either.

@@mattg7952 I am a small town kind of guy. I lived in San Diego for 4 years, and I hated it. I mean as far as So Cal is concerned, San Diego is the crown jewel, but the towns that I live in are 50,000. I fully understand TRAFFIC JAMS!!! Where I live now, we have a rush 30 minutes, and then it is back to normal. My 09 2500 rides nice empty, but when I slide in my quad rack and load 2 Polaris 4x4 quads in the back over the sides of the bed, and then pull a 25' lance camper it is a bit much, so I had to add air bag helper springs. I also installed an on-board 12 volt air compressor to air them up. The quads weigh about 800 each, and the rack is about 350. With the quads over the bed sides, it was a little top heavy, but with the air bags it is fine. I previously had a 5.9 in a 1993 Dodge dually. It rode so rough empty. I went over to a friends gravel pit and told him to put gravel in the back until it squatted the springs. We weighed it, and I had 7,000 pounds of gravel in the back, and it STILL rode rough, plus it did not steer very well. LOL
@mattg7952
@mattg7952 4 жыл бұрын
@@Rat-Builder The first 4500's like my repo truck had really soft springs. The weight of the bed and box set it on the over loads. The boss put super springs on it instead of bags. It rode nice compared to the 01 f450 it replaced and got better mileage. I ran the truck in Riverside county and spent way too much time parked on the 91 freeway. That's why I ended up moving to AZ.

@@RiggyRonnie -- Horsepower is calculated from torque. Horsepower = torque x rpm divided by 5252. ALWAYS. PERIOD. END OF STORY. Stating that an engine makes "the most torque per horsepower" is nonsensical. The reason the Cummins seems like it makes more torque and less horsepower is that it only spins 3000 rpm where the other diesel competitors rev higher.
@RiggyRonnie
@RiggyRonnie 4 жыл бұрын
@@HalfCrazy520 Congrats you know how to calculate it bravo, but do you know WHY it's calculated that way? The combustion process of the inline 6 creates less friction than any v8 with giving it a beefier stroke therefore more torque. It doesn't need much rpm to get it doing. The p-pump refuels it at around 2400 rpm look guy I put about 40k miles on one.

Its lifted on 35" tires and a few other fun things on it. When I got it 3 years ago it only had 9k miles on it so I've put 11k on it so at least it is used more now. I have an 09 that I bought new in 10. It only has 63k on it. I love it. I sample every oil change, and at 55k it was getting fuel dilution. I deleted it and installed a new clutch/flywheel assy. Yes the stock one was JUNK. Dodge's idea of a 2 piece flywheel is STUPID. I have never abused this truck. I am 72, I gave that up abusing my pickups a few years ago. LOL They do not smog check in my area. Also, my tail pipe was rusted out. The frame on my truck is bull-stout. My 93 Dodge diesel 3500 also had a bull-stout frame. Those 2 piece frames that they had for a few years ARE JUNK!!! Thankfully, they learned that lesson. Now we need to educate them about the 2 piece flywheel. I have never owned a truck with this much power. One of the things that I did do was install a FASS fuel system. Look at their website it has a video about why it is a good addition to your truck. I am a retired heavy equipment mechanic, and I fully understand what FASS is doing, and why. When I worked for Cat, we were having similar fuel system issues with the 3116 engines.

Better disassemble those rockers, check your adjusters for worn balls and rocker lever bores and shafts for scoring, just noticed you only had the pedestals separated from the rocker assembly’s on the bench, Tear down should include a more thorough inspection at that mileage, and usually will include some overhead parts replacement unless maintenance was impeccable.

@J.R.in_WV 4 жыл бұрын
Honestly most damage I’ve seen to the actual cylinder bore (scoring) is caused by lack of air filtration. Especially older engines (carbureted) where people will run them with literally no filter on them. Most modern engines I’ve seen fail even with high miles are a rod, crank or other hard part failure. Very rare for a light duty engine to simply “wear out” where it still runs but has low compression and power these days like they used to.

I've never seen coolant temperatures higher than 220 even in warm weather, and the transmission temps barely budge at all. I don't know how it's even possible to "abuse" a 6.7. They just ignore everything you throw at them.

So today something interesting happened. I started my truck (2017 Ram 3500 6.7 Cummins/AISIN) and the check engine light was on as well as the traction control. (Also on the dash, it said service air suspension and service electronic braking system) The P on the dash was flashing. When I took it out of park, all of the labeled gears (P R N D) turned yellow. Than a few seconds later, BAM, the truck shift extremely hard into drive. I drove the truck to the dealer and it was shifting extremely hard... like getting rear ended hard when I would come to a stop or slow down. I left it at the dealer. Any idea of what this could be? TCM? I have 41k miles on it, used very lightly. Full tank of fuel, full DEF, just had oil changed, air filter changed, cabin filter changed, primary and secondary fuel filters changed a few days ago. The dealership said it threw about 20 codes, some in red. I’ve had no issues up until this point...
@TermiteBenny
@TermiteBenny 4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Bainton Jr Could be a wire harness issue. I’m sure the codes will start to point them in the right direction. More often not when they suddenly do things like you explained it’s a electrical problems and sometimes that comes from a short in a wire harness.

When I turn my key on to let the grid heater do it’s thing the fuel and battery gauge would always kick in and show the voltage and how much fuel I had and when I started the truck the gauges would stay where they was surpost to be. So I got in my truck other day and turned the key to let the grid heater do it’s thing and the battery and fuel gauge will not work. But here is where it gets weird when I start the truck the gauges kick in just fine like nothing was wrong. At the same time this started happening my CD player will not turn on but when you click the time button the time will show for a couple of second and go away. I can eject cds and my cigarette lighter quit working. Now my fuel gauge light on the cluster is dimmer than any other gauge. I had a scanner hooked up and the only thing that showed up is aps relay open circuit. Turn out that is for adjustable pedals which my truck does not come with since it’s an slt model. In the fuse box there is a spot for the aps relay but no fuse and I don’t think that would have anything to do with my gauges. Got any ideal what could have caused this? All fuses are good and it runs great and gauges work once the truck is started. I also have stock CD player. It’s a 2005 with only 108,000 miles. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
