SEXTO DE LA SERIE JOAN CHAMORRO PRESENTA
Andrea Motis ( 2010)
Eva Fernandez ( 2013)
Magali Datzira ( 2014)
Rita Payes ( 2014 )

This piece is perfection! The Esteve Pi the drummer is sparking everybody into action. Toni Belenguer the trombonist has articulation, tone and technique that defies the second law of thermodynamics, The soprano solo by Dick Oatts is beautiful with wild abandon. Mark Martin's piano is enchanted by the jazz gods...Josep Traver's guitar strings glow with incandescence and as for Andrea Motis, she is the embodiment of jazz both instrumentally and vocally. I have never heard softly played with such an explosion of joy and pleasure. Joan's bass playing along with the drummer holds the whole mass of musical energy stable. Wow and Oh my God!

Fabulous Andrea who is really into this swinging version of Softly. The quality of her voice and phrasing are absolutely superb and she sounds like Miles Davis on the muted trumpet.

Agreed! Sometimes, she's singing "trumpet style"! Alas, I have yet to figure out how to sing "muted"

@@paulsj9245 I guess trying to sing "muted trumpet" is an added complication. To me Marc Matin's album is very underestimated (judging from the number of viewers and those who hit the "like" button) as it's an album that swings hard and is full of interesting solos from brilliant jazz musicians who know how to swing hard. I suppose that for the majority, jazz is of superficial interest, they view by "name" or what happens to be trendy at the moment and marketing plays a part, though not as big as in pop music, where it can make or break a musician. You might wonder why I'm replying on a 4 year old release but like you (I'm guessing) I love to go back in time and watch the early years of Andrea's development as a jazz musician. The first videos of Andrea I saw, were from "Live at Jamboree" and I was simply blown away (and still am) by the talent and maturity of the then 17 year old Andrea. She seemed to have assimilated at her very young age all the "savour faire" in jazz that takes half a lifetime for others to digest. Myself and family started to go regularly to Barcelona in the hope of seeing Andrea and the SAJB. Initially we didn't have much luck as Andrea usually travels a lot in summer but now we "target" her concerts whenever possible and I've seen her quite a few times in Barcelona and in Paris and it's surroundings. Meeting her father was a stroke of luck because he gives me a lot of interesting information, I buy CDs etc directly from him. Andrea has a radiant personality and is a bundle of dynamite, overflowing with exuberance and the joy of living. She has that endearing quality of modesty and humility, no big star complex with her and to me her on stage performances are authentic and natural which the audience can sense.

@@ferreiraronald7873 Now I'm the one going back in time - missed your reply then... I'm totally in love with the kids - ehm, grown-ups - , the band and Joan! It started in 2015 (didn't know about the fabulous Palau concert then :( ) with Andrea's Basin Street of 2009 (Casa Fuster). From then on, it's a "Hotel California" story - never able to leave! Contemplated about Barcelona at Easter 2016, decided against it (1500 km by car?) and settled for St. Moritz in the summer - brilliant experience of two concerts, including a talk with my not so secret crush, Carla (on the musical side only, I'm over 60!)! Today, it's an ongoing obsession - nothing else in my living room! I agree, Marc Martin is an exceptional young pianist - have you heard him post SAJB? Alas, Jan Domenech filled out his boots well, another outstanding talent! Happy New Year, stay safe!

@@paulsj9245 I also seemed to have missed your last reply. By pure luck I stumbled on to a video of the 16 year old Andrea, also in 2015 and that was the start of a love affair with the SAJB and Barcelona. I was fascinated that a 16 year old was not at all intimidated performing to an audience of 2000, on the contrary she seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Andrea enjoys the limelight, you commented on it elsewhere using the German expression for limelight, but it's done with great honesty. I've never ever seen Andrea trying to steal the limelight from anybody. We (myself, wife and daughter) started going to Barcelona (from Paris it's 6 hours by train, quicker and more convenient than by plane) every summer but didn't get to see the Andrea Motis Quintet or the SAJB. However I did see the Quintet quite a few times in Paris. We did drive (1100 Km) to Barcelona twice during the April school holidays and were lucky to see some concerts, but it's a long drive and in Barcelona the car is a burden. I got to talk to Andrea quite a bit and she's really a lovely person in every way. I also got to know her father, Ramon, who manages the business side. I went to the Sant Andreu jazz festival in September 2019, and it was a great experience. The first morning whilst trying to find the festival building I had the luck to meet up with Andrea and Carla who were going there themselves. Andrea, who has an awesome memory for faces, recognised me and said "Hello Roland" and and gave me a little kiss, like people might do when greeting friends. I felt honoured and said "Wow! Andrea, I'm not going to wash my face during the festival" Both girls burst out laughing. I met most of the SAJB members, they all communicate comfortably in English, know the history of jazz and are friendly kids. I talked with them right through the festival but especially with Andrea, Carla (your favourite ), Jan Domenech, Jean Mars Sauquet, and Joan Marti. Carla speaks fluent English, you know that, and though shy, once you break through the shyness, is a pleasure to talk to. Marc Matin, who is as jazzy as ever, has his own trio and gave a concert at the jazz festival. We also fell in love with Barcelona and returning often is something we look forward to. But Covid 19 intervened and we couldn't go last year. Ramon Motis advised me not to risk the jazz festival in September. as the situation was bad in Barcelona. Let's hope life will get much better by summer this year. Keep safe in these uncertain times.

Magaly's version trumps this one. Wrong tempo The title's opposite (Softly)Softly as in a morning sunrise The light of love comes stealing Into a newborn day Flaming with all the glow of sunrise A burning kiss is sealing A vow that all betray For the passions that thrill love And take you high to heaven Are the passions that kill love And let it fall to hell So ends the story Softly as in a morning sunrise The light that gave you glory Will take it all away Softly as in a morning sunrise The light of love comes stealing Into a newborn day Flaming with all the glow of sunrise A burning kiss is sealing A vow that all betray For the passions that thrill love And take you high to heavenAre the passions that kill loveand let it fall to hell So ends the story
