A Ford Senior Master Tech had me remove the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes and I was able to get off the highway. Saved me an expensive towing bill! It kept working fine but still changed the sensor. It is on the third one over 120,000 miles. The lift sure helps replace it!

Same issue yesterday on 2015 5.0. It stranded me and 88 year old mother in law. Was fine on the way to her house 8 miles; turned off to walk her to truck. Didn’t want to start. Started on second try. AC wasn’t working right (90 degrees outside). Started watching temperature gauges nothing showing on coolant gauge, transmission temperature was fine. Didn’t make it home. Now I am worried about mother in-law seating in the heat and of course my broken down truck. I waited for ten minutes between attempts to crank truck and drive the approximately 1 mile to my house. It would not crank. I found this video after family picked up mother in law. I saw where clear codes to operate correctly. I happen to have something to clear the codes with. It was like a miracle. Everything was operating like perfectly. Today I changed the sensor. Without this video I would have been screwed. Thank you so so much! I had 2 iPhones; FaceTimed myself to get a good view of the sensor. Your video put me on it but seeing it while working it was good for me.

Had this exact alert and problem happen on my 2016 5.0 158,000 miles this week. Alert showed on dash, Temp gauge went to 0, CEL on, and Trans temp showed normal like you mentioned. Before I saw your video I dropped my truck by a local non-dealer shop. They did a disposable block test and told me that test showed coolant present in the cylinders and exhaust present in the coolant system. They say bad head gasket. Recommended engine replacement. I did have them clear the CEL for me, I paid for 30 mins of labor and brought my truck home “ran perfect coming home a few miles”. Oil looks perfect, no smoke, no sweet smell exhaust. Coolant reservoir shows about 1/2 inch low below the Max fill line. I picked up this sensor at Ford this morning for $28; going to throw it on and see what happens.

I’m currently experiencing this on my 17’ ecoboost mustang. It was my fault for not checking the coolant before going to work. When I filled it with coolant, I had autozone check my engine light. It came back as my cylinder overheating protection is active. The car runs, idles, accelerates just fine and doesn’t give the notion that it wants to stall while driving….

Similar situation for myself on my 2017 3.5 ecoboost. 3 years ago radiator & new water pump. 6 months ago hauling a load with ac on truck overheated and blew coolant out the relief. Shop replaced the tstat. Was good over the winter but then about a week ago when I hauled again with cruise on ac running air temps around 55 and it progressively warms up quickly and throws the overheat. However no check engine lights. Pulled over and turned ac off and temps went back to normal fairly quick. Finished my remaining 10 minute drive. Fished the day and went to drive back home. Got 20 minutes down the road and it did it again. Still no check engine. Any recommendations on quick things to check before I bring it back in? I got a warranty so they can fix it up but just curious if you have anything I can tell them in advance

I have an older 2007 expedition with the cylinder shut off cool down feature. When I first got the vehicle on warmer days and in reverse the cylinder shut off would engage and I thought it was a reverse problem and then it started doing it while slow rolling after driving and I thought the vehicle was breaking down from being old and then I learned about the cool down feature. It does it all the time now and I think I'm having the issue you are showing. There is no dash warning for it on a 2007 but everything with the truck is running fine as you've stated.

@@FordBossMe It glugs like a diesel when it does it and I used to think it was stalling out so I would quickly drive to increase RPM's but I know now that as soon as it seems to putter out it re-corrects itself and then idles normally but its still annoying, it will do it when driving slow now and it slightly changes the performance and when you are by people they think your truck is in the process of breaking down.

Ok, I give up after 2.5hrs of frustration, how does the clip for the wires come apart? I’ve tried a little screwdriver and can’t seem to get the clip to release. Wish there was enough room to have filmed that part. The way this presented for my daughter on her 2016 F150 5.0 is pretty much as described, she got about 3 miles from the house, the temp gauge pegged at max, over temp warning message popped up, and the engine started shaking and barely ran. She shut it down and called dad. I pulled it home, pulled the therm and tested it on the stove, working perfectly. Went searching on good ol utube and found this vid. Thanks for posting, really helped us out in figuring out what was happening. Now about that clip…

I am having the same issue after changing a cracked thermostat housing. Drives fine for 10-15 minutes then the temp gauge rises and the overtemp light comes on. No check engine light or code. Let vehicle sit for 10 mins and you can watch the gauge come back to normal. Start driving and ten minutes later it does it again. The engine does seem hot. Trans temp remains in the middle. Bad thermostat? Air in the system? Any Ideas?

I watched the video and it’s say for 3.5. Mine is a 5.0. Is there a updated thermostat for that as well? I installed a after market thermostat housing assembly probably should of stayed OEM.

What if you change the sensor and the problem still persists? Also could not removing the code cause the fam still get high even after changing the sensor? Thank you in advance

Then you got other problems going on or you're not doing something correctly like maybe you have bad wires or maybe there is something going on that is causing it to overheat that's going to have to be something that you stopped working on it at some point and maybe take it to a shop and let somebody diagnose it if you can't figure it out

@@gabrielalvarado8959 I was there in 2005. Because of the drought the city would cut the water to the colonia every morning and not give it back till late afternoon. Do they still do that? My host told me there were 99 curves to reach Aconchi up the mountain and that there were hot and cold springs up there. I asked if he was sure it was 99 and not 100(?) He said he was sure because he drove the hill daily to go to university for several years. I still remember the hot dog man who had a stand at night at the Walmart parking lot.

@@obsoleteprofessor2034 Hi, We moved to Hermosillo in 2007, my business is in mining, the Ford assembly plant is practically our neighbor, this year I have seen lots of Maverick trucks and Broncos coming out of the factory. Yes, they still cut the water service from time to time. Now days there are lots of hot dog stands around the city specially at night. Certainly I have count the curves all the way to Aconchi.

I cannot understand the benefit of this type of sensor. Why not an actual probe in the coolant? To try and avoid a potential leak? My Mustang GT has some engine data readout on the cluster, and “cylinder head temperature” is one of them. Guess they weren’t kidding. I have no idea how you’d ever get to this sensor in the Mustang chassis

Hi, I have a 17 F150 5.0. Had a temperature fluctuation last winter so I changed the thermostat an that seem to correct the issue. A couple weeks ago it started doing that same fluctuation again so I changed the CHT sensor but it did not correct the problem. Today I noticed that when I turned the a/c on the temp dropped right back down to normal, 194-198. So that made me realize that the fans not kicking on. We hooked it up to a computer and the temperature correlated to the same as the digital readout. We could turn the fan on with the computer but still no fan when temps got a above 200. We checked the fuses and moved relays around still no fan unless the a/c was on. Do you know what may be causing the fans to not kick on when the engine heats up?

I bought 2016 f150 2.7 echo to this day only 16k miles . I got it brand new off lot first owner . 4 weeks later turbo on left goes out . and high temp light on and fan is racing . took it to ford and they refuse to fix it . I was never ruff with the truck I hardly drove it because I m a otr driver. So basically i got screwed on that truck . I still have truck but it just sits. there was a really good reason it sit long to . to be honest i feel like washing my hands of it. lets say i got a free truck after taking 3 years waiting for legal action to rule in my favor.

The key to knowing whether or not it's actually overheating or if it's a sensor issue as if the engine says it's overheating but the trans temperature says it's normal you know you got a connection issue or you got a sensor issue
