2015 - 2020 GMC Yukon Tail Light Removal - How To Remove & Change Brake Reverse Light Taillight

A quick video tutorial on how to remove and replace the tail light / brake light assembly on a 2015 - 2020 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.
The GMC Yukon owner's manual contains the following information on the removal and replacement of the tail light / brake light and reverse light:
The taillamp on this vehicle is an LED. For replacement, contact your dealer.
To replace one of these bulbs:
1. Open the liftgate.
2. Remove the taillamp closeout cover from the lamp assembly by pulling rearward from the top and bottom at the same time to unfasten the snap tabs.
3. Remove the two screws from the taillamp assembly.
4. Pull the taillamp assembly straight back to remove.
5. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the tail light assembly.
6. Pull the bulb straight out from the socket.
7. Press a new bulb into the socket, insert it into the tail light assembly, and turn the bulb socket clockwise until it clicks.
8. Reinstall the tail light / brake light assembly and tighten the screws.
9. Reinstall the tail light / brake light cover by snapping it into place.

Thank you!!! Definitely helped me today!!! Gm told me they would fix 1 for me for $1500. They do have a recall but it’s only up to like 70,000 miles. So after that you’re on ur own. I ordered lights off online for $300 and they have a 10 year replacement warranty. Saved myself so much money

Ridiculous engineering. If you think that’s bad, wait until you see how rough it is to replace a front headlight bulb. I would very much like to choke whoever designed this stuff to eliminate what used to be “easy” diy repairs.

Brian, design wasn't the point. Fired, he/she was probably promoted. If your logic applies to make anything including truck taillights nothing would be made, particularly by Americans.

There was a GM silent 'service campaign' to replace rear tail light assemblies due to mfr problem. We had both replaced under warranty last March on our 2016 Yuk. Then the reverse bulb burned out in May. Thanks for the video.

Yeah the 2015 and 2016 Yukon are notorious for having the circuit board in the tail lights crack - the Yukon in the video had that exact issue.

Thank you for the video. In the comments, one person mentioned that gm has a silent recall on the tail light. I'll investigate that opportunity. If it falls through, I'll visit a junk yard before spending $800.00 from the dealer

Yeah it's a common problem for the circuit board in the taillights to crack in these years of Yukon. There are also refurbishing services you can buy on eBay that fix the tail lights and send them back or you can purchase taillights that are already fixed and exchange your broken ones - that's what I ended up doing

If anyone noticed, you can look closely and see that there are two Gray spots on the back part. It looked like he opened it up or someone opened it up and soldered on the inside because I watched another video and the guy opened it up like he cut it open and soldered. At these two joints that apparently break within the tail light itself, so that's why he was saying to replace the whole thing. If the whole thing is an issue, but there's another video on showing that it got cuts it open, and so does it. That's doing the most.

Yeah - I didn't fix these ones but they had been done before as you can see. It's a real common problem on the 2016 and 2015 Yukons. I think they started using an updated version of these taillights in 2017.

I had the same problem 2 years ago so I opened it up and soldered 2 or maybe 3 spots and epoxied over them. Worked well. Now I have the same problem in a different spot. Good video on removing and install

I did this myself. Some part always breaks inside..Solder back that piece that’s inside and good as new.. been working great for 2 yrs now.. and it only cost me 15 on Amazon for the soldering kit

if the tail light is bad then yes the whole taillight assembly will need to be repaired to replaced. The circuit boards in the taillights of these years of yukon are often break - there are several videos on KZfaq on repairing them

On these years of Yukon part of the circuit board in the taillights tends to break - it's a very common problem. Assuming that's what your problem is - you can find KZfaq videos on how to repair them but its a pretty in depth. I actually purchased an exchange service off of eBay where I was sent taillights that had already been repaired and then I had to send my broken ones back in. I think it was about $250 - $300

Soldering kit costs you about 15-20 bucks on amazon.. some KZfaq videos and boom you’re light can be fix easy, I did myself on my 2017 Yukon

Great video and explanation!! What an absolutely terrible design though. You have to replace the whole brake light assembly because your brake lights don't work? At that point, you should just sell the car and run as fast as you can away from any GM product.
