2015-2021 GMC Canyon Headlight Replacement/ LED upgrade

I am upgrading the low-beam headlights on my 2016 GMC canyon to LED bulbs. The halogen bulb on the drivers side is out and instead of replacing one I am upgrading both. These headlight assemblies are standard for 2015-2021. Easy straightforward job. Interestingly I did not get a headlight out light on the dash at any time, I would have expected that.

Just throwing this in here... You can access the passenger side low beam by going through the cloth liner In the wheel well... 4 screws and slide it out the way. Takes less than a minute.

Hey that's a good idea. I never think of removing the fender liners. Do you pull the wheel too or did you have clearance?

@@-Dad-- nope. Just the 4 screws holding the liner. You can pull it aside and reach the backside of the headlamp just fine.

Great video! Made an unnecessarily complex task (thanks to GM design) much more easy. One thing... the fender clips you link to on Amazon... they are the wrong diameter. The linked clips are too big a diameter to fit in the existing holes. The clip removal tool however made it such that no damage was done when removing the old ones... so I was just able to re-use those.

Thanks for your video on KZfaq. I changed my low and high beam bulbs on my 2022 Canyon Elevation. The only thing is while the switch is on auto, the low beams use to come on whenever the truck was running making them running lights. Now with the LED'S, they only come on in the on position. Is that something you noticed with your install? Please let me know if there something I can do to correct this. Thanks Glenn Laurie

Hey Glenn, your comment got me curious so after work today I actually paid attention to what the truck did. I don't remember how mine behaved before the change but right now after starting the truck the low beams are illuminated as well as the LED strips that are on the top and bottom of the headlight enclosure. This is with the switch in the auto position. There is a small green headlight symbol illuminated inside my rpm gauge if that means anything and it is closer to dusk but not dark fully. I can add to this when I catch it in full daylight one day. I think it may only actually illuminate the bulb (switch in auto) during full daylight and just have the top and bottom led strip illuminated all the time.

@MrOzzman888 thanks for your comments. After I first installed them, the running lights didn't come on. But later that evening, when I started my truck and in the auto position, they came on. I don't know what happened. But I am completely satisfied with my new lights.

I wonder why there’s all that nonsense to take apart on the right side. It doesn’t seem like it needs to be there. They could have made it just as easy as on the left. Oh well. Why ask why? Thanks for the video. I just wanted to make sure I actually had to take all of that apart. Kinda “funny” that the owners manual tells you how to change the left bulbs, but says “sorry, go see the dealer you mechanically inept individual” on the right. Thanks GMC.

Would the 9005 fit?

Apparently 9005 will fit into the socket for an H11. I would make sure that the fuse for your headlights is at least 65W or compatible with whatever bulbs you get advertise as 9005 are usually higher. You won't be disappointed with the brightness of these in the H11 though, I still have some people flash their lights at me thinking they are brights.

So if I use the bulbs you displayed, I need no resistors or special attachments?

That is correct. The bulbs displayed will plug directly into the stock sockets and headlight enclosures without any additional equipment. I'm around 20k miles worth of driving so far with them and no issues.

Yeah I should have, it would have been a little deceiving though because my one side was burned out when I replaced them. I could have installed one and tried it that way but it is what it is.
