Many motoring journalists appear to have an obsession that cars have to be brilliant on track (and therefore compromise actual day to day driving). Something I have never really understood....must be getting old.
@imnotusingmyrealname4566

@@johnmull59this has nothing to do with track worthiness, pretty much all road cars are horrible on track stock with everything overheating and stuff like lubrication not working properly, even the new BRZ/GR86 can't be driven on track because in hard cornering the engine oil isn't lubricating the parts. This is all just for show, to appear as if it's track capable, cars are so incredibly superficial.

Yeah, I sat in two Alpinas throughout the years and saw many, many more - what you notice is, that they take every part of a BMW and check it for its quality, if it isn't good enough, they replace it with their own. The end result is what a BMW should be in the first place, just superb quality all around.

Fantastic review...by a guy who can't even read an owner's manual to find out where the heated steering wheel button is. The owner's manual by the way is available in traditional form, in app form, in the car's iDrive system which can be accessed from the screen menus or speech recognition, or he could've just used an internet search to find an image of the location in about 5 seconds.

Car Magazine which I love had an annoying habit of proclaiming that a particular car was best in class, perfect in every way. However when a face-lift or new model was introduced, they would list a litany of improvements over said prefect car. This was particularly the case with BMW 3 series, VW Golf and Porsche 911 reviews.

Had an Alpina D3 for about 4 years (2014 model) - so I expect very similar to the car reviewed. Excellent performance and handling, cheap to run (40mpg average) and felt that bit special. Downsides - i felt the suspension was too firm for the shocking roads where I live and the road noise was surprisingly loud. I didn't like the power delivery but i think that's performance diesels and turbos rather than an Alpina issue. I'm firmly in the 'no replacement for displacement' camp. Congrats on the 300k achievement.

@@BMW1M Incorrect. He said his car was a 2014 model, so that means he was incorrect in calling his car a D3. He didn't know his car's model name, it was really D3 Bi-Turbo. D3 Bi-Turbo from 2014 is based on F30, so that always had a six cylinder engine. -The E90 D3 was made only up to 4/2008. It had what Alpina called the L1 engine, which is based on some version of the BMW four cylinder diesel, I can't be bothered to look up which one, but it was the engine from the BMW 320d of the time. -The E90 D3 Bi-Turbo was made up until 5/2013. It had the Alpina N1 engine, which was based on the four cylinder BMW N47 D20 with sequential twin turbo as used in the BMW 123d. It also naturally used some parts from other engines, eg. the intercooler was from N57. -Then in 2014 came the new model based on F30, also called D3 Bi-Turbo, with the first diesel straight six in Alpina's 3-series basis cars. That had the Alpina R3 engine, which was based on BMW 335d's six cylinder diesel engine which is the same as they used in Alpina D5 Bi-Turbo.

Regarding the hate for SUVs, I drove the family from the UK to Italy and back, with a fully loaded boot and roof box, in a TS Hybrid Cayenne. The youngest one being 3 years old. Driving up to 9 hours a day, for several days, with children was a breeze. The car was equally amazing to drive across twisting alpine roads and tunnels as it was off-road once in the hills in Tuscany. It was the perfect format for a car for the trip. For me, the holiday was about experiencing the car excelling across the varying conditions between the destinations. Steaks in Italy were good, too 🥩

I'd be interested in you doing a talky video on the BMW diesel engines. Reason being, I have a 2.0TDi Tiguan that at best does 45mpg. When someone crashed into it in a car park, the insurance company gave me a rental BMW M440d. Coupe is not my thing but irrelevant to my point. I did 880 miles in it before handing it back. The first 4 days, I did 588 miles and it managed 56.2mpg. I have a picture of the trip computer. What astonished me was how much power the engine had when you planted your right foot, but it could still do well over 50mpg. I need to drive my Tiguan like Grandma to get 45mpg. I am certainly not a BMW fan, but they need a round of applause for that engine. And am I looking at the classifieds? 540d touring, oh yes please.

You should compare this to the W205 Mercedes C-Class: I've never been a fan of Mercedes, but when I happened to buy a C350e T some years back, which happened to have the optional air suspension (standard on the PHEV model) and the rare option of additional acoustic and thermal insulation (including double-pane windows) I was astounded. It was supremely comfortable and quiet, and you have to go to seriously more expensive cars to get anything close to it! And it was finally a Mercedes that was very nice to drive too, as the gearbox and steering as well as chassis were finally done properly. Every car should be benchmarked against the W205 C-Class with air suspension and acoustic package. I bet you that SUV is massively less comfortable and much more noisy, and isn't any more fun to drive either (but the engine is somewhat more pleasant).

@@DJEylisium It is nearly exactly the same in purpose as the W205 (or actually S205, as that's the code for the estate version). I never said it should necessarily be compared to the C350e model, though for many that would be a very good choice. I only said that *_I_* happened to buy the C350e T. . There are many S205 models to choose from, like C300e is a better comparison to the Alpina, or the C400 4Matic. In case you didn't know, or didn't hear JayEmm mention it in the video, these SUVs are bought for the exact same use as estates. The C-Class is just more sporty and far more comfortable. Also faster and more frugal, costing a lot less to own. Try to resist your natural laziness and try to push despite your lack of intelligence, and actually address the issue if you want to disprove what I wrote. You didn't back up your empty claim of "it's nowhere near the same" at all, you uneducated ADHD child. Your right Jay, I don't like it because it's an SUV. I'm 'one of us types' it seems. Here in Au they are the mainstay of bland boring breeder types that you don't want to be sat next to at dinner parties with their boring baby stories and bathroom renovation aspirations. SUV's are useful appliances just like dishwashers and microwaves and about as exciting.

Nothing wrong about raising families and renovating homes, I'd much rather hear about that than tedious bores going on about their sporting and travelling exploits like they're bloody Bear Grylls, and this is clearly a very rapid car, goes like stink and handles just as well... there's not much will keep up with it cross-country.

@@richardharrold9736 I would rather not sit next to either type thanks. Yes, the XD3 does go like stink, right up until it goes BANG. Alpina has a terrible reliability record and their bespoke parts become unobtanium rather quickly. Great car when under warranty then run like hell.

@@CathodeRayNipplez the only thing that is likely to go bang in this are standard BMW engine parts - and with the upgraded cooling system, it is a lot less likely to go bang in the first place. We had an Alpina E46 3.3 in the family for a while and it was perfectly reliable even at 15+ years old.

Hello James, one thing which never fails to surprise me, is the incredibly cheap price's of cars in Great Britain. I am in Australia, and every car and price you mention is at least triple what you approximate. A fair to good Audi 5 series, GB 13~15k pounds, is in Australia, for the same year, but far higher mileage, up around the $200,000 range or higher. Now how am I to equate an Audi which you test drove and made sound so wonderful I wanted one immediately, to having to find a quarter of a million dollars for the privilege of driving it? A pound is usually around 2.4 times an Australian dollar, which is fair enough. However, when I guesstimate a vehicle from your review at say, 45 to 50K, leaving lots of room to spare, but still missing by $200,000 it is very disheartening I assure you. Mercedes service are so dreadfully poor here, that they aren't on the list ever, unless you lease. Generally anything fully enfolded in the Volkswagen group equally are so poorly supported that I would not wish that suffering on an enemy. Pretty much leaving the BMW brand to reign supreme in every way. We in Australia are more akin to the Euro drivers in expectations, (I recall you saying the US Camaro was a remarkably un US drive. We built them in Australia under the GMH name and shipped them to the states. We did the same with our Commodores, under a different name, and for the US driver cognoscenti, it was a must-have driver's car.) Similarly, in the USA the prices for cars, second hand in particular were ludicrous by my estimation and familiarity. For instance an 82 V6 Camaro for $2500, whereas the identical vehicle converted to R/H drive in 1992 would comfortably achieve a sales price of $12,500 (I was assured by a fellow who imported yank cars into OZ)which I consider ridiculous. A mass-produced Lego kit car, assembled by drunken monkeys, with an interior which was so plasticky it would fall apart before my eyes. The benefit to me was pointed out by several people in the know, as a car I would find half way exceptable to drive compared to most American cars, (which turned out to be so true when I latter rented some brand-new cars. I do understand about the economies of scale, yet even so, this seems far too extreme.

First you say you consider yourself an automotive journalist, then you say you can't find how to turn off the steering wheel heater...so apparently reading the user manual is too much of a hurdle for you?? 🤦‍♂🤣 Nowadays they have user manuals in app-form too, and I suspect that F25's user manual is available in app form so you don't even have to know how to use a index or glossary, all you have to do is use the search function of the app to find where the button for the steering wheel heating is. The user manual is probably also included in that car's iDrive system so you can find it there too, or even just by asking for it in with the voice command. The third option, which took me about 5 seconds, is to do a simple internet search and look at the image results. It's probably on the steering column, on the left side on LHD cars, as in so many other BMW models.
